trousers Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Can someone draw a picture for me? (not of the sofa, I get that bit...)
Danish Saint Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 This is fantastic news. Great day all around! Here's a video:

pedg Posted 4 July, 2012 Author Posted 4 July, 2012 You may have to enlarge that a bit. Better to watch it outside of the video embedding at
dellboypete Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 been watching the webcasts from CERN all morning - looks like they have
trousers Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 How do we know these scientists aren't making all this stuff up to justify their own existence? I mean, look at this b*****ks.... It's all made up ****
trousers Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Just watching the live press conference where the scientists are trying to explain what they've found in layman's terms.....more convinced than ever they're making it up.
Clapham Saint Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 How do we know these scientists aren't making all this stuff up to justify their own existence? I mean, look at this b*****ks.... It's all made up **** Its all a conspiracy to make us beleive that god doesn't exist...?
alpine_saint Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Just watching the live press conference where the scientists are trying to explain what they've found in layman's terms.....more convinced than ever they're making it up. Welcome to the world of science funding..... How co-incidental is it that the Tevatron in the US suddenly started finding hints of the Higgs boson just as it was shutting down ??? I dont believe any of them or their data. I made the same point on the global warming thread.
pedg Posted 4 July, 2012 Author Posted 4 July, 2012 I dont believe any of them or their data. I made the same point on the global warming thread. I am glad to hear that your uneducated opinion trumps large amounts of peer reviewed scientific evidence. Lets stop doing research and just ask what you think the answer is shall we?
trousers Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 large amounts of peer reviewed scientific evidence Yeah, but they're all in collusion to back each other up. Their jobs depend on it. They'd have nothing to do if they didn't make up new stuff....vested interests abound....
Lighthouse Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 What's betting these Higgs Bosons turn up on eBay, just like the Olympic torches.

They'd have nothing to do if they didn't make up new stuff....vested interests abound.... It must be hard job making up all this stuff across continents based on enormous amounts of data and at the same time making sure they all agree what they are making up.

I made the same point on the global warming thread. What absolute rubbish. While I can't pretend to be an expert in particle physics, maybe you should go do a little reading on the basics or even better go look into the vast amount of evidence and data to back this all up. And maybe then look into what we have done with the knowledge we have found out because of science. It's makes me laugh how people sit there on their transistor based machines and say science is a load of rubbish.
Petersfield Saint Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Yeah, but they're all in collusion to back each other up. Their jobs depend on it. They'd have nothing to do if they didn't make up new stuff....vested interests abound.... But Trousers - what about Labour?
emerson massey Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Yeah, but they're all in collusion to back each other up. Their jobs depend on it. They'd have nothing to do if they didn't make up new stuff....vested interests abound.... You cant believe that is really the case...? Surely.... I'm confused by this....I always found you one of the more rational posters, so i will assume this is tongue in cheek!
buctootim Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Those tvats at CERN making all this stuff up. You remember that last nonsense they came out with - the worldwide interweb or something, never heard of again after all the hype died down . Science is just a big waste of money. We should go back to banging rocks together.
Colinjb Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Right. So, in a nutshell, the Higg's Boson particle is the thing on which the idea of 'Mass' hinges. That it can be defined means that we can understand mass and physical behaviour better? Yes? So does that mean we can start looking at different ways of propulsion? Will it mean that faster then light travel can now be considered?

Goalie66 Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Where can I buy a flux capacitor then? you have to be a disCERNing buyer
buctootim Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 So does that mean we can start looking at different ways of propulsion? Will it mean that faster then light travel can now be considered? I'd settle for getting a seat on the train.
hutch Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 I reckon all the Higgs Boson particles are in the British Virgin Islands. They will NEVER be discovered.
Joe Kirkup Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 It must be true I can see a huge black hole - sorry it's just the missus tying her shoelaces.
trousers Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 It's OK....I take it all back....the D:Ream keyboard player has explained it all.... Brian Cox @ProfBrianCox So, in very simple language. ATLAS and CMS have independently discovered a new particle mass ~ 126 GeV which behaves like SM Higgs Glad that's cleared that up....

buctootim Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 But, but CERN has a bloody great big machine to bang things together, so that we don't have to! I'd pay good money to see two rocks hit each other at the speed of light. We used to drop them out of Canberra towers in Weston but local physics bye laws meant we could nver get them above 120mph.

lifeintheslowlane Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 S**t they beat me too it...at least I'm undercutting them...mine are only 300 quid each.

pedg Posted 4 July, 2012 Author Posted 4 July, 2012 S**t they beat me too it...at least I'm undercutting them...mine are only 300 quid each. How do we know yours is a real higg's boson and not one of those Chinese fakes they are now churning out?
trousers Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 I'm hearing Pompey are going to be selling £30,000 worth of these particles to the kids they are letting in for free next season....
Saint J 77 Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 How do we know these scientists aren't making all this stuff up to justify their own existence? I mean, look at this b*****ks.... It's all made up **** LOL The more I look at that the more I think you may very well be right
Lighthouse Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 Has anyone got a copy of today's Sun? I want to know what Katy, 23, from Salford thinks about this discovery.
70's Mike Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 heard the skates were looking to sign Higgs Boson from Switzerland
lifeintheslowlane Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 How do we know yours is a real higg's boson and not one of those Chinese fakes they are now churning out? These came from a mate who works at Cern. He smuggled a dozen out last week so these are genuine "first release", they were stuck to the back of a piece of Sellotape.
Petersfield Saint Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 also available on ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/390394-higgs-boson-higgs126 (especially like the frequently bought together section) Though I hear apple have leaked they are working on an iBoson so many will be holding out for that I expect. And then Apple will say that they patented it first and have it banned in the USA, Holland and other parts of the universe
pedg Posted 4 July, 2012 Author Posted 4 July, 2012 And then Apple will say that they patented it first and have it banned in the USA, Holland and other parts of the universe I believe they claim to have a patent on all subatomic particles with rounded corners. They are currently suing the rest of the universe on court and if they win all non iParticles will have to turn back to their state from before the big bang.
dubai_phil Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 OK so now they are not sure what Higgs Bosun they have found. One set of data could indicate it is a non-conformist Higgs. Other data that it could be a Vanilla Higgs. Eh? So the research could be starting to indicate that there is a possibility that there may be more than one Higgs Bosun. So there could be more than one God Partcle. So that means they have possibly discovered that there is more than one God. Wow, that's gonna screw the planet up then. We'll have wars between differing Higgs Bosun Opinion Factions... Shouldda read the story about it in The Sun, rather than clicking through random links. I think I need a cold towel to the forehead now. Oh to join the Alpine Funding Debate, they WILL of course find multiple God Particles. They will then decide that these Multiple God Particles will of course have to be held together by a Bigger than God Particle. This will invoke a global move by the World's Scientific Community to create an Even Bigger than a Hadron Collider super duper. It will of course be called Deep Thought and will (eventually) be recorded in history as the second greatest Computer ever built by Mankind
lifeintheslowlane Posted 4 July, 2012 Posted 4 July, 2012 It will of course be called Deep Thought and will (eventually) be recorded in history as the second greatest Computer ever built by Mankind ...so the answer really is 42.
pedg Posted 4 July, 2012 Author Posted 4 July, 2012 Ok, they've found it. Religion - your move. "Hi, this is religion here, sorry we are not in at the moment, we are currently busy infighting and destroying each others shrines. Please leave a message after the amen"

Loved the package deal with pink plastic tweezers. Spat coffee on the screen, still wiping the tears from my eyes. Getting funny looks. Scientist are such pretentious w*nkers. "non-comformist Higgs", FFS. Did they really call it a "vanilla Higgs" ? Does it come with chopped nuts and chocolate sauce too ?

Its nothing to do with sailing f**king ships. If there really is more than one, the Standard Model they thought they had proven could be about to fly out the sodding window, triggering anothe mulit-billion Euro research application (how convenient..)
