trousers Posted 3 July, 2012 Share Posted 3 July, 2012 The Market Porter, Borough Market. Best real ale pub in central London. South of the river but worth a stroll. Nice part of town. Borough Market itself is a great place to visit on a Friday or Saturday.

Borough Market itself is a great place to visit on a Friday or Saturday. What's the name of that very old pub in Borough - to the right just before you cross the bridge - opposite a church? Had galleries and an open courtyard. I bet it's not there any more. I used to go there a lot when I worked at the then South Bank University. trousers Posted 3 July, 2012 Share Posted 3 July, 2012 That's the one! Cheers, T My pleasure :-) Lots of touristy pubs being suggested. Decent in their own right but I prefer to go for the less obvious ones personally. If anyone is up in London and at a loose end ever, then drop me a PM for a beer at a decent boozer if I'm free. I work in the Aldgate / Tower Hill area.

Turkish Posted 3 July, 2012 Share Posted 3 July, 2012 Went to a cracking little pub before West Ham away this season, the pride of spittlefields I think it was called, in Shoreditch. As has been mentioned the Grifffin is also worth a visit.
scotty Posted 3 July, 2012 Share Posted 3 July, 2012 If you happen to be a Private Eye reader, the Coach and Horses in Greek St is worth a visit. Decent food as well as loads of memorabilia about the eye and Jeffrey Bernard (it was his regular watering hole.)

That is a legendary pub, used to use it before london games in the 80's, the landlord was a rude c unt mind. I stay away from soho nowadays mind,to many chutney ferrets . buctootim Posted 3 July, 2012 Share Posted 3 July, 2012 (edited) The Harp in Chandos Place, Covent Garden. Really good pub and beer. Much better than its oirish website http://www.harpcoventgarden.com/ I also like the Salisbury nr Leicester Square. Heavily touristed so not much local atmosphere but I like all the gilt mirrors which make is seem double the size, like a circus trick. http://www.taylor-walker.co.uk/pub-food/salisbury-covent-garden/pid-C3111 Edited 3 July, 2012 by buctootim
so22saint Posted 3 July, 2012 Share Posted 3 July, 2012 I'm happy to big up The Harp in Covent Garden as well - was there on Friday and great real ale selection (and 15 minutes from Waterloo as well - Friday pub crawl went The Harp, The 18.05 SWT to Weymouth buffet car, The Albion in Winchester - and onwards )

As has been mentioned the Grifffin is also worth a visit. The pride is off brick lane, decent beer, cheaper than the alex in southampton and good people that run it. I drink in there fairly regularly to be honest and would recommend it highly.

LVSaint Posted 4 July, 2012 Share Posted 4 July, 2012 If it were me, I'd combine a curry in Whitechapel (Tayyabs or Lahores), walk it off, down to the Prospect of Whitby in Wapping by the river, for a great view of Docklands and some nice proper ale. (Bit East of Central though.)

dellboypete Posted 4 July, 2012 Share Posted 4 July, 2012 The Harp is my favourite central London pub as well - this was the Camra UK pub of the year last year and deservedly so. It's small and can get really cosy, but beer and service is excellent. and in addition to those already mentioned.......some of my favourites... The Bree Louise - near Euston Station - a bit out of the way but has upto a dozen real ales plus several real ciders - most of the ale delivered by gravity behind the bar. Also get 50p off a pint if you a Camra card member (lunchtime pies are also legendary). Just off bottom of High Holborn, a hundred yards up Hatton Garden (worth a browse for jewelry etc) is Ye Olde Mitre. Down a very narrow passage and easily missed, this is one of the hidden gems, claims to be one of the oldest pubs in London and has regular mini themed beer festivals - but usually is closed at weekends. This just around the corner from my office so is quite handy! If you are only interested in the beer and not the quality of the pub The Craft Beer Co in Leather Lane Market (one of the street markets - specialises in cheap clothes) and even closer to my office has on average 12 hand pumps and about 16 craft beers (mostly belgian, german french etc). Half way down High Holborn on the left with the Clock outside is one of the Sam Smiths pubs - The Cittie of Yorke - which is worth a visit . Joe Kirkup Posted 5 July, 2012 Share Posted 5 July, 2012 My favourite is the Nell Gwynn down a small alley off the Strand. Its absolutely tiny inside but because it's tucked away mostly tourist free. Decent ale and proper bar food - rolls and pork pies which they make themselves.

Griffo Posted 25 August, 2012 Share Posted 25 August, 2012 Was told last night about a pub in kings cross called the flying scotsman, def worth a visit Ha, it serves a purpose if that's what you want from a night. Haven't been that far out in London other than around London Bridge/Borough. I like the Lord Clyde and Dover Castle (sh*t pub but one of the only ones that has a late night license other than Belushi's) The Kings Head (might be Kings Arms, I forget) is also decent and cheap for London standards.
