Should we change our club name?

We've changed ground, now the kit,

What about if we decided to change our name, Not a radical complete change , but add a nickname to the end, American Football Stylee.

Its been done in Rugby league and union and cricket.

Southampton Saints for example, or Southampton Solent, Southampton Hogs, Southampton Chargers, Southampton Corteses etc etc.

maybe even a sponsored name..It will only be a few more years before this is common, Why not be the first to go down this road?

Southampton Virgin FC, Southampton Mastercard FC, Southampton Nokia Lumia 800 FC...

I wouldn't favour changing the name.

Though I recognise the club's links with St. Mary's, it represents the whole city now. Changing the name back to Southampton St Marys ( or something similar ) seems like a bit of a backward step given the club's customer base.

Definite no to any corporate name changes. Would be a first at this level of English football. We'd be a laughing stock.

Solent Saints FC, for when the skates implode and all of their fans take the trip up the M27 for Premier League football.

They'll be doing that even if they survive. There are literally thousands of them planning on doing this next season, much like there were the same amounts of Saints fans at Fratton Park between 2005-09.

Hmm yeah, you're right. I think maybe Pat has a point, rather than restrict ourselves to the Solent we should make the most of our massive catchment area and rebrand ourselves as South Coast Saints FC. Then we're being inclusive to all of our fans from Dover down to Cornwall.

When we were in admin there were rumours that we were going to be taken over and saved by Red Bull. We were in such dire straights that most people were up for it. We should remember where we have come from before this turns into another slate Cortese thread.

Tsk, such a Dell sized mentality. our catchment area covers everything below the M40, M6 and M25. South and South West Midlands Saints is far more in fitting with our catchment.

Isn't some of Wales in our catchment area? All of it is below that imaginary line from Liverpool, Birmigham and London. South of Britain Saints would be better. IMO.

But then we leave out our European cousins from northern France and beyond, what with relative cheapness of air travel these days.

This is all very confusing. My Dell-sized mentality can't comprehend it all.

With the amount of young British talent we are allegedly buying why not Team GB when Adkins doesn't like the name change Pierce can step straight in.

Not forgetting there are probably thousands of Rangers fans who will now be looking for a premier league team to support and probably won't want go be glory hunters, with Glasgow only an hour away from Southampton by air then I'm sure we'll see plenty of them heading south every saturday this season.

These perpetual sarcastic fantasies you construct to annoy our more optimistic fans would be mildly amusing if I hadn't read them all before.

Of course, a side-effect will be that if we do qualify for CL in the near-future, you're going to have a very hard time on here :D

Should that day arrive I will happily take what comes my way.

He's like a stuck record, isn't he? But he doesn't annoy the more optimistic fans; most just feel sorry for him.

Serious(ish) point. Neither pessimists or optimists know what is in store for the club. Tight run ship, etc. Could genuinely go either way with the theoretical cash at our disposal.

At this point, the future of the club has little to do with what fans think, and everything to do with the owner's long-term plans. Seeing as no-one really knows what they are, anyone outside the club who says they know where Southampton FC will be is talking bolox.

Indeed, you are correct, no one knows or has the crystal ball to say where we will be in the future. All we can do is look to past evidence which suggess its highly unlikely and the only club that have done it with any consistency are Man City who have spent £100s of millions. It's a lovely dream that we can do the same with a team full of players that have come though the academy or are here for the sheer honour of playing for Southampton whilst ignoring greater riches elsewhere, but reality is somewhat different, sadly.

We should just rebrand ourselves as The Football Club. Everyone will know it is us because we are the only club worth knowing about. No need to suggest our location, just world domination. I considered Roman Empire Saints but realised this would exclude our Japanese customers, not inclusive enough. The New Saints has also already been done, so not an option.

In answer to the OP, NO!!!

Is past evidence even that reliable?

In the past, we were a club without the sort of money we have now. If we were returning to the Prem with Rupes at the helm and nothing had changed, then there is a fair chance that 99% of people would agree with you.

If we look at recent evidence, i.e. under the new ownership, all signs point to a regime that appears to be prepared to spend money to meet its aims. If we decided to extrapolate that fact instead of our near-perennial mediocrity, the prognosis looks a bit healthier.

As I said before, it all depends on the owner's plans.

FWIW though, I don't think we have to spend the same sort of money as City. I don't even think that City needed to spend what they did.

The name has got to appease every one:

The well dressed, untraditional but dynamic replica shirt wearing, optimistic but realistic, champions league and relegation fodder, 50,000 sized stadium, no catchment area but have all the support south of London, bigger than Everton but smaller than Rangers, Foam hand wearing, Steeeeve Clap Clap Saints of Southampton.

I think it's got a nice ring to it,
