SaintRichmond Posted 2 July, 2012 Share Posted 2 July, 2012 Agreed. So probably the season after that or maybe 2014-15? Can't wait. Just a small point though; we'll need to sign better players than Buttner if we're going to directly compete with Man City. There is nothing wrong in having aspirations to compete with the likes of Man City In fact, such aspirations should be applauded not scoffed at, because it is a POSITIVE attitude Far far better than coming out with " well our aim this season is to avoid the bottom three " What a NEGATIVE thought process that is Cortese IS selling the Club as an UPWARDLY MOBILE concern, and long may it reign Well done Nicola I say

the saint in winchester Posted 2 July, 2012 Share Posted 2 July, 2012 I've asked a Dutchman to translate it for me... Büttner: "Southampton wants to chase Man City." Alexander Büttner currently only has one wish: that Vitessse reaches an agreement with Southampton to seal his transfer. The leftback trained on Sunday for his employer from Arnhem, but there's a real possibility that that was the last time. "I want to go to Southampton", as the defender said curtly (loosely translated here). "I am waiting to see if the clubs reach an agreement, but I count on Vitesse's cooperation. Büttner has a contract that expires at the end of the season and can count on the interest of several clubs. Southampton was taken over by a billionaire in 2009 and got promoted to the Premier League last season. The Saints appear to be willing to pay the most under the leading of the billionaire. "It would be a very big disappointment if this didn't happen" says Büttner. "I've been in Southampton and everything - even the living conditions - is perfect. The club, the stadium and the reception really surprised me. Beautiful. And Southampton has major ambitions. With the new backer they want to chase after Man City." Some seem to criticise you from time to time, MLG, but I thought this was very clear and a very useful insight into the way Cortese is presenting the club to potential signings. I like the way he is doing it. ALL GOOD.
dubai_phil Posted 2 July, 2012 Share Posted 2 July, 2012 Why is everyone being so negative? This FANTASTIC NEWS, and should be overwhelming proof for all the doubters about our Champions League candidacy. I can't wait, what a roller coaster journey this is, from the bowels of League 1 to chasing and usurping Manchester City. Great stuff. Totally agree. Am now starting to think that my support for the 60k stadium is totally wrong. It's clear we are going to need nearer 80k and we also have to expand Southampton International's ruwnway & Terminal to cope with the A380's coming in for the games from the ME & Asia

Flyer Posted 2 July, 2012 Share Posted 2 July, 2012 Every team does this. For example QPR were trying to sign Giroud and he said: "There is another coach that I met and that’s Mark Hughes, the manager of Queens Park Rangers, where he has a big project. "But Arsenal, and not QPR, is one of three or four biggest clubs in England. Not yet, anyway. " after seeing the plans for the future.

Can you not see that one comment at the end of a brief interview which has been loosely translated from another language is absolutely concrete factual evidence that Cortese is telling new signings we will be competing for the title and we should beleive him, after all, what other player that joins any club likes what he is told from the chairman? batterseasaint Posted 2 July, 2012 Share Posted 2 July, 2012 It rarely fails to surprise me how negative you lot can be sometimes. The player is clearly impressed with the club and it's ambitions, and it looks like that has stolen us a march over other interested parties. And remember, this is a 23 year old on the verge of the Dutch national team. Yet some of you use this to scoff at and deride the club you support. No doubt you would be *****ing like little girls if the player chose another club over us, citing lack of ambition as the reason. All rather pathetic really. Nothing wrong with being ambitious, but how about we establish ourselves as a PL club again first? 2 years ago we were in league one FFS, a bit of perspective wouldn't go a miss. No wonder there's rumours of us not being able to agree terms with players, if this fantasist is going round telling them he wants the world then they're bound ask for silly money. You're right. I mean, when Jan Poortvliet took over, we were told we'd play Total Football and get a play-off spot. Okay we got relegated, but he said it didn't he? When Rupert Lowe said we should be challenging for the Champions League, how good was that? Okay we got relegated, but he said it didn't he? Oh and what about when we wouldn't sell Theo Walcott and Rupert Lowe was just inspecting Arsenal's training facilities, okay we sold him, but he said we wouldn't sell didn't he? I agree but I there are a couple of points you are skipping over here. 1) MLG is a very good source of information and does cut and paste very well. However, he does set himself up for some stick and a bit of what's been called 'geek baiting' as he has been in the past quick to correct others with a sarcastic response. He has always been the first to jump on a poster who made the mistake of mixing up Davis with Davies or Adkins with Atkins with a "who is that" comment. He therefore must expect to get a bit back. 2) This forum is mainly read by men who are football fans and therefore there should be a bit of banter and a laugh. Although everyone has a different opinion of where the line is and when it has been crossed, we are in danger of having a boring sanitised all seater forum. There has to be space for a bit of fun. I'm clearly not that bad on Twitter or I wouldn't have nearly 600 people following me. Yes, some people on this forum don't like me, but a number of people do. I have received a number of good will private messages from other members of this forum about the abuse a certain 5 or 6 posters constantly give me.
