If true, I imagine they're referring to the conference room in the hotel, and that would point more to agents/club official discussions on a deal rather than any sort of media press announcement

Why? They didn't anything too grand for rodriguez.

Gees. Can people get away from "press conference called" stuff? The media doesn't work like that anymore.

If there's a calling notice or ops note sent out, it is 99.9999999999% likely to be about (a) a photo op for something already announced or (b) something crushingly dull.

The days of "pray, will gentlemen of the press care to gather in the foyer of the Grand Hotel for the purpose of hearing an announcement pertaining to the activities of the honourable Southampton Football Club (association rules)"....are over. Dead. Gone. Never to return.

How do you know? As far as I know, the club put him up in a posh hotel, where the club officials and Rodriguez's party met to discuss terms, before sealing it in a discrete location.

Conference rooms can be booked for all sorts of things, staff training or briefings, meetings with external parties. As you say more likely for negotiations with an agent or possibly to do our own photo-shoots etc with a new player, without any junior member's of the hotel staff trying to take photos through a window......

Read the title of the thread you created! You then go on to say "according to this" and link to a thread that doesn't mention a "press conference".

Are we playing a game of Chinese Whispers?

Well, you named the thread "Press conference today???" - with the implication there might well be.

You then linked to a piece on a fan site that made a vague reference to a room being booked in a hotel, possibly.

If I started a thread saying "Is Beckham signing for Saints???" and then linked to a short article saying that he and Posh might be visiting the New Forest, and suggested "according to this" he could be, I'd expect to be flamed for it.

Or you could note that the part that referenced "press conference" might not be accurate but that rest of the link suggests there is a player we're interested in staying at a local hotel with a conference room booked for tomorrow which could be for discussions between player and club or other purposes?

F*cking hell; this is a message board for idle speculation and gossip, its a sorry state when someone gets "flamed" for passing on a rumour.

I think if you read my initial reply....#4 above...that's a fair (and turns out wholly accurate) response to the thread title.

No, there probably won't be a press conference.

Even if there is, it won't be remotely interesting.

I didn't "flame" the OP (just said I'd expect to be myself if I posted a Beckham rumour along the lines outlined).

Facepalm squared.

The thread title was misleading and wrong; the rest of it was interesting enough (if its true that we're clearly in advanced talks with a player). A bit harsh on Pat throughout this thread I think.

Think my annoyance is the prevailing (although slowly diminishing) view that press conferences are where news is announced. This is amazingly rare these days. And virtually unheard of in football.

Perhaps it's our collective memory of the Keegan capture?
