I think you've done a twisting job yourself. I never said it wasn't a branding exersize. I said it was rubbish "brand building" and it is.

 

No problem with the posters themselves. But this isn't some cutting edge revolution and this in itself is not going to make us money, as sone are breathlessly claiming.

 

Anyway. Not sure this requires this much debate....!

I agree re your day trippers point, but it all adds to the experience, especially for the kids - see dronskisaint's post above. And let's be honest, the football can put people off sometimes!

 

And good attempt at twisting my words. Yes, I do admit some over-champion Cortese's contribution, but that's besides the point. Cortese deserves a huge amount of credit for what he's done - the fact some disagree with this is madness in my opinion. And agreeing that something has been over-championed implies agreement that something should be championed as well ;)

 

Without getting all Luddite, if you want to create a brand, cut prices and reward loyalty. Don't put those things further out of peoples reach.

A slightly overwrought marketing campaign that misses the point is at best redundant and at worst a tad insincere. And if I wanted 'glory' and 'victories', I would be whoring after some other team - not sticking around with saints.

I really don't understand the vitroile of so called supporters sometimes. I mean, we're back in the Prem...we've got players who want to stay at the club - love the club and the City/area and talisman players like Lambert who kids can identify and look up to. We've got a Chairman and Team Manager (plus backroom) who have transformed the club into something to be proud of. AND we're playing great football to boot.

 

And STILL we've got the trolls and WUMs on here bleating about some posters! How sad is that?!

It isn't brand building. It isn't "amazing" it isn't going to attract hundreds of new fans. No one is moaning about them. What people are moaning about is the "this is amazing" everytime the club does anything. It's a few posters, thats it.

I did think the same, but it was probably a toss up between Jay Rodriguez and Lallana for the ''for the future'' poster, and I guess the club are keen to show our record signing off..! He's going to be a special player by the way.

All over St Mary's (and other grounds I've been to) there are pictures of all types...Players, past glories, burgers, pies, beer, trains(!), adverts for events, club emblems...Liverpool make a big thing of their 'This is Anfield' slogan....there are statues, posters advertising the next games - I know you know all this because you've probably been to more games and grounds (I'd probably doubt the latter because I'm an old f art who likes driving and has been to a good percentage of the league grounds) but the correlation I'm trying to make is that it's all about creating the experience of identitifying with the match-going and all that goes with it

 

You may say (and probably you and I would be the same in this) is that you're a dyed in the wool, hard-core Saints fan and you don't need this to be a Saints fan, that you find it embarrassing (I don't incidentally) but at some stage you got hooked..possibly first time you went (I did) and I'm sure you didn't notice the posters, the next fixtures board, the advertisements, the club flags and emblems or the tannoy announcements but they were all part of the experience,

 

These are part of the modern day equivalent of the same - you may hate that it's more scientifically thought out, that suited whizz kids are probably employed to produce the images and slogans but it's all part of the same 'come along and be a part of this' ethos that's been around since football club competitions have been in existence.

 

You might dislike the medium, you might take an irrational hatred against the look in a player's eyes or a slogan that you don't think befits your image of your club but that image has been shaped by the forerunners of just this type of thing and you are a product of it.

 

Whether I like or dislike it is immaterial but as it happens I'd prefer Saints related pictures to grey corrugated iron or a big airline logo...and in the latter you have the major part of the reasoning....that airline paid a fortune to put that logo there because they wanted to be a part of something positive, something that made people feel good...do I need to go on?

 

Agreed. It's a shame no one else seems too though.

I see these are currently in the process of being replaced. All i have so far. Can also see a "Our Dream Is Real" one aswell but can't quite make out who it is.

When you end up buying the shirt anyway it all becomes a bit redundant, IMO. But there we go; different strokes for different folks. I'll boycott it by not buying it (and generally thinking it looks thoroughly sh*t), so we each have our own approach of "trying something".

It's not redundant because it's obviously something that a fair few people (yourself included) want, that I have tried to provide a focal point for some kind of focused effort is my part of trying to protest and has the potential to be far more effective then one lost sale. The desire is obviously there for a return to stripes in a great proportion of the fanbase!

 

The sales figures of this shirt are going to be very interesting, in conversation it has become clear that none of my friends will be purchasing and they are usually all for buying the new kit.

They would be interesting, but I'd be amazed if they were ever released (other than the usual Pravda nonsense of "fastest selling" or what not). I've heard from a few people that the white away kit was one of the worst selling kits in Saints history, but we'll probably never know for sure.

This is true. However, if the shirt's sales figure will never be released and the designs are possibly reflecting the whim of someone who believes that the all red approach is a good idea for various 'reasons'.... then a boycott may not have any impact whatsoever.

 

Club insider: "We havn't sold 'x' numbers of shirts..... a shame, but at least for 'y' reason the primarily red design is worthwhile."

 

Other methods of protest may either help to change the mind of the decision maker or help to make the reason for the change apparent.
