doddisalegend Posted 29 June, 2012 Share Posted 29 June, 2012 ..go and watch non-league footy rather than saints on a saturday? I mean I'm a saints fan through and through but I won't be able to afford to watch saints play as often in PL this season as I used to. I get the feeling that I'll really miss regular trips to the footy on a weekend. I see I can watch my local non league side for £16 for me and both kids so I'm thinking this might be a way to get a cheap football fix on a saturday afternoon clearly it's not going to be nearly as much fun as watching saints. Just wondering how many saints fans have a non-league side they go and watch (when saints are playing away for example) and just how bad is non-league footie? CLOTH EARS Posted 29 June, 2012 Share Posted 29 June, 2012 I watch Totton regularly. We have had some wonderful football to watch most of the time. There are some really good players in the Southern League, you'd be pleasantly surprised at the standard. Obviously the atmosphere isn't quite the same as St Mary's in terms of noise but there is a nice friendly atmosphere.

Watch Eastleigh on occasion; some argue the football itself, although of a lower quality, is just as exciting - it's just not the same when you're not in a crowd of 30,000 though

The Cat Posted 29 June, 2012 Share Posted 29 June, 2012 Maidstone because I was born there. Get to about 5 games a season, more away games though especially the ones nearer to here which tend to be top of the A3/Surrey way. Will have to get to a home game soon though because they have a new ground and will be playing in Maidstone for the first time in 15 odd years. Seen Totton a few times too. Will go to more next season, especially midweek, as Saints have less games. For some reason I don't like Eastleigh (probably because I worked in the poxy place for too long) so don't go there. I also have a once a season stroll to the top of my road to watch Hamble. I like non league and would much rather go and watch a game live than sit at home watching a Premier or Champions League game on tv.
Fan The Flames Posted 30 June, 2012 Share Posted 30 June, 2012 I've watched loads of non-league over the years, I used to watch Steyning in the Sussex County league for a few season in the 80's, they got quite far in the FA Vase one year, also Worthing quite a bit. I now live near Maidstone and will be going to the new ground this season. Up the road Dartford have a great new ground built by the council and have been on a good run ever since, a few colleagues from work follow them and have a good time. I know a Welling United season ticket holder, and when I first met him and we were talking teams I asked who do you support and when he said Welling I asked he who did he really supported and he got quiet cross. There is definitely life in the non-league, it's old school to a degree and a decent pint at half time, back to the club house at full time for a pint and the results. I also like the club house element to non league, plus the fact you can often drink your pint and smoke a cigarette while watching the game standing up. Whether that is Championship football, league one etc. From the posts lots of you have obviously always been into watching lower league football. And I definitely watch it and take my son for a day out, not quite saints but better than washing up and scrubbing floors.

PhilippineSaint Posted 1 July, 2012 Share Posted 1 July, 2012 Are you all forgetting that now we are Premier league every single game will be available free on the Internet somewhere, and everybody including us oversea's fans will be able to see all 38 league games in full. As opposed to the dribbles that we have had for the last few years. If your on here now you can surely get a TV stream com kick off in August. Bucks Saint Posted 1 July, 2012 Share Posted 1 July, 2012 Been to Maidenhead Utd a few times. Standard is not high but its cheap, friendly, with a quirky ground that they OWN and it's 5 mins walk from the town with plenty of pubs nearby. On the subject of the ground, they have owned it for over 100 years. There are major redevelopment plans for Maidenhead and the council assumed, without checking, that the club would sell up, seeing as they are slap in the middle of prime retail land. The Club said get lost, try and make us, never selling, been here since 1890 something. Or something like that. Brilliant!

True...though having just had to give up my ST I have the feeling I may crave actual live football. Nice though dodgy internet streams with plentiful adverts on my little computer screen are they aren't a great substitue for proper live footie. Then you will know how us far flung fans have been feeling for the last few years but as luck would have as I will be in Angola for half the season I should get to see most games on Supersport with Terry Paine in the studio.
