Tour de France thread

Tomorrows stage is a big one, after the last summit its a 20 kilometre ride downhill to the finish. I am expecting Nibali and Sagan to be very strong so Wiggins, Froome and the rest of the Sky team have to try and loose him on the climb. Very much looking forward to this stage (after this stage its just 2 mountain stages left)

Schleck fail a doping test

Makes me laugh though as they get a huge list of products that they cannot have, and if they take anything with said substance in, they get thrown out. But when you see failed doping/drugs test, you think performance related drugs. 9/10 this is not the case. Probably took a cold tablet or something to help him sleep.m

Stupid, but should have checked with his team.

He seems to have tested positive for a diuretic - the sort of thing than can be used to flush illegal drugs out of the system, or as a weight control mechanism. ( Funnily enough I am currently watching a documentary on BBC4 about Ben Johnson )

Brilliant stage today and looking forward to tomorrow's. Really not sure what got me into the TdF. I remember popping round my dad's gaff 2 years ago and seeing him watching it and thinking how sad. Last year I had an epiphany. Maybe it was Mark Cavendish's sprints that did it, maybe it was the camera work going through France. Whatever it is, I seem to be hooked.

Some of the ****ing clowns watching there need a damn good slap. A few days ago the tacks. Today Voeckler and others hitting out at those getting too close. Why do those idiots run alongside the cyclists?

That stage was on a par with stage 7 where the sky team destroyed the field on the Cat 1 climb up to La Planche des Belles Filles.

Super ride again by the Sky team, particularly Wiggins & Froome (although I thought Froome looked completely shot in the last 200m heading up the Col de Peyresourde when Wiggins lead the chase after Nibali tried to attack again)

Voeckler was great to watch and like last year he's becoming the 'story fo the tour'.

I have to agree with OTH. For me it's the one event of the year I get really excited, stay up and watch every stage (they finish about 1am Oz time), even more so than the Euro's (I only stayed up for the England games and even then I was questioning why). For me the only other events I put close are the Tour Down Under (mickey mouse even compared to Le Tour but I love it because it's local and always go through the village I live in), World Cup and the Rugby World Cup.

Today's stage should be another gem, particularly with the Cat 1 hill top finish and Port de Bales climb.

I was watching some of the TDF yesterday and I thought..... sod that, they are mad!

Saying that I then watched a program after on Eurosport Mountain Bike world championships, now that looked fun and a little more up my street. I have a mountain bike so may start going off road after the cycle in September, but not before as I will probably fall off!

I will then get a road bike, and have my mountain bike for off road!

Brilliant today again from the 2 Brits. I reckon Froome would have caught Valverde if he hadn't have decided/been told to wait for Wiggins. Good to hear Brad making noises that he'll ride for Froome next year, he has to really it's only fair.

Is Wiggins now the best sportsman in the country? Loads of Olympic medals and barring a huge crash he'll be the first Briton to win the Tour de France. Epic stuff.

You know, I think brad should have told froome to crack on 3 km out, wiggins would still be in yellow (albeit 40 second lost on froome), and froome would have got another stage win

For all we know he may have with Froome deciding to help out Wiggo.

Today was the most brilliant finish..Cavendish looked after by his Sky team then led out by Wiggins and then Hagen..?

Then Cavendish like a BOLT of lightning....Unbelievable...

The last few KMs so enthralling..Well done Sky team and very well done Cavendish..

You must watch the last 10/20 kms to see just how the Sky team brought Cavendish through..particularly the lat 3/4 kms...

Hopefully a repeat in the Olympic race...With Millar, Wiggins , Frome etc setting up Cavendish..

Frome for the Tour next year..

Incredible again. Just a ridiculous win.

For all of us that have been watching British cycling for 20+ years this is payback time. It wasn't that long ago we didn't even have anyone in the tour and now we are pretty much owning the whole sport. Soon we could plausibly be home to the Tour de France winner & runner up, plus the World and Olympic champion. Nuts.

I don't undestand why everyone is saying he's won it. What if he falls off?

As long as he was still breathing his team would carry him round and the opposition would neutralise the race. The last day is all about cruising into Paris, and letting the sprinters loose - Brad will be part of the SKY train pulling Cav to victory.

Great finish by Cav and great lead out by Wiggins & Boassan-Hagen. No other sprinter can touch him when he's got his tail up - absolute legend!

This tour could not have gone better for British cycling - 7 stage wins, yellow jersey, 2nd in the GC, and a win on the Champs-Elysees............ and it was a British team for all of those achievements except 1 of the stage win!

Astonishing and wonderful. Not only do we have a British winner for the first time ever (and probably the first Briton since the late Tommy Simpson to even look capable of winning it), but we also have, in Chris Froome, a rider who looks like a shoo-in for a future Tour win - or several. Plus, of course, Cav shows once again that he's the greatest sprinter around right now - untouchable when he's on song. And let's not forget David Millar, who rode a fine Tour as well.

What we need is another British team with similar set up to Sky built around Cavendish, then we could have Cavendish and Froome challenging for the green and yellow jersey (reckon Geraint Thomas is another possible contender for the yellow jersey in years to come)

Richard Branson should set up a Virgin team to do just that! And yes, Thomas looks like he could mature into a GC contender but I see him as more of a classics rider, he could definitely win a bunch of them in years to come. There's loads of other incredible young British riders coming through too like Ben Swift, Peter Kennaugh and Luke Rowe.

But yes, wow, just wow. That was the best sporting event ever as far as I'm concerned. Very jealous of all the Brits in Paris today, there appeared to be thousands and thousands of them.

Heard on the radio earlier that Froome will ride the Vuelta in September. Would be just brilliant if he won that.

Never thought that would happen in my lifetime. The day after we got married in 1987 Stephen Roche became the first person from these islands to win it, now a few days before our silver wedding anniversary Wiggo becomes the Brit to win it. Astonishing, right up there with best sporting achievements. Make no mistake at an elite level it is just nuts the speeds these guys go and the gears they turn. Just to put it into perspective, on my ride today the fastest I clocked was 55kph just about flat out and about to spin out, coming down a motorway bridge over the M4, Wiggins on the lead out on the flat on the Rue Du Rivoli was 65 kph and then some.
