Its likely a great signing, giving us 2 quality left backs and Shaw pushing on. Must be the end for Harding & Dickson you imagine and in reality neither are up to PL standard.

As good as it is, we do still need a GK, CB, CM, RM & RB however imo! Will we sign 7 players in the window?

I think we need to sign players that can fill 2 roles as I can't see us getting another 5 players.

RB/CB -

Keeper - Buttland

CM/RM -

It amazes me to be honest the amount of people saying 'done deal' - despite all media sources saying 'subject to medical and personal terms'. So it's not a done deal then, is it?

This!!

Until it is on The OS with the token pic of him with a Saints scarf / shirt in his hands .... it could yet go mammaries upwards.!!!

He looks very impressive from the Youtube clips...(yes yes i know), but he could be a real asset for us and he seems very quick.

One thing I ask though is, if he is that good, why wasn't he playing instead of that useless bugger that played for Holland in the Euros, he was dreadful.

Ask Bert van Marwijk, the clueless (now former) manager of the Netherlands. Le Tissier didn't get many England caps, doesn't mean he was bad, just that the likes of Graham Taylor didn't pick him.

The man who led the Dutch to a World Cup final and through amazing qualification campaigns? Yeah. He's REALLY up there with Graham Taylor in terms of incompetence in international management.

I didn't say he was on a level with Taylor, just that you can't judge Buttner on the views of one international manager who has now quit due to mistakes he made this summer.

Dutch footballers tend to be developed so they can interchange positions, and generally are very comfortable on the ball.

I'm sure he will fit into our style of play superbly well.

Lets hope the medical goes Ok, but in the meantime welcome aboard Alexander

Not really the same though is it. If Le Tissier was a RM and England were screaming out for a RM then he would have been picked...anyway thats for a different thread. Just seems a bit odd when Willem was absolutely awful.

Biggest mistake was playing van Bommel. But you cannot say van Marwijk is clueless. That's just completely wrong.

If you take squad selection, team selection and tactics for the finals this summer in isolation he looks clueless. Yes, I know he was successful in the past, but he is no longer the Dutch manager for a reason.

the dutch left back at the Euros was horrific.

One of the worst players in the whole tournament. Watching him in one the games I started laughing at him but ended up feeling genuinely sorry for him, he was massively out of his depth playing for an underperforming team who started as one of the favourites to win it and ended up a laughing stock.

Still, he's only very young so plenty of time for him to recover and come back stronger. Although I feel he has too much of an air of the Djimi Traores about him for my liking.

He completely lost the dressing room as well; the Dutch normally don't need too much of an excuse for squad disharmony but Bert's insistence on playing his son in law and general abrasiveness rubbed all the top players up the wrong way and went a long way to developing the friction amongst the "stars".

I wouldn't say he was clueless; when it was going well the Dutch looked great. When up against it they just lost it and played like a bunch of strangers at times.

If you seriously want to look at that tournament in isolation then that's up to you. Rickie had some torrid times in the early part of his career, look at those in isolation and he's clueless. Lawrie Mac bombed at Sunderland, in isolation he's clueless. Interesting way of looking at things you have there.

Solents Adam Blackmore says deal will probs go through early next week after medical.

Hopefully more to come, agree we still need the following in order of priority:

GK

CB

RM

RB

CM

2nd CB

Hmm. I'd be quite surprised if we signed as many players as that. Assuming the Buttner deal does go through, that would make eight signings. A lot.

Compares well with other promoted sides in previous years, and Reading look like they will hit 8.

GK and 2nd CB will post likely be backups but you have to strengthen the spine, bplus we are short of a quality wide man, although if Buttner is going to be a midfielder then that might negate the need for an RM.

Would really like to see a new RB and if Hammond, Chaplow or JWP make more than 10 Prem starts combined in the centre of midfield we will go down so we badly need another option alongside Cork and Schneiderlin.

Not really, its actually less than all 3 promoted sides made last summer (including loans).

Is that right? I recall Norwich signing a fair few.

I'm just taken back to Adkins talking about keeping a squad together, which usually means no drastic improvements. Obviously I think we'll improve - indeed we already have.

I recall that Norwich signed nine when they went up to the Prem.

I thought we had a policy of only bringing in players who are better than what we have....

He might be considered better than harding?

SdR didn't come straight into the team when he joined, nor Billy Sharp - they need to earn it over pre season and adapt to our style etc.

Fox has done well, its not like he is a liability that we need to replace ASAP. He will still play a lot of games next season.

RB/CB - Martin Cranie is available on a free. Don't think we should pass him over. Never miund 'not prem quality' - he's on a free, and still young enough to improve.

He said he wants to stay in the Championship which is why he left Coventry.

He said that because he knows he has no chance of moving to the Prem.

Defensivley he is IMO. In fairness SDR never really broke into the team on a regular basis and Sharp was involved pretty much as soon as he came in ...at least that's how my dodgy memeory remembers it

Fox isn't a defensive liability. In fact, apart from Ince away at Blackpool can't remember him being beaten multiple times by a winger.

Certainly assisted far more goals than he conceded through poor play.

Sharp was involved in the first couple of games and then replaced by Lee for a long spell (only ended by lee's injury) whilst he adjusted to our style.

Buttner seems a quality signing, but none of us know the plan and I am just saying it is too early/easy to completely write off Fox who did a good job for us last year.

There was a thread on here a while ago that listed the number of players signed by each club in the summer. Obviously QPR had loads (11 transfers, 1 loan) but Swansea had 8 transfers plus 1 loan, Norwich also had 8 transfers plus some loans, I can't find a list but I know they had at least Ritchie de Laet on a season long loan.
