FFS. Shows we have no money to spend. We are showing no ambition. We are definitely going to get relegated. The new kit is a disgrace.

Adkins out.

Cortese out.

Where are my razor blades...

All I said is it appears to be taking some time to close the deal, FFS.

QPR have put in a bid thats been accepted, Saints have to match that for him to go to SMS. If they dont match then he either goes to QPR or stays at Vitesse.

Saints are not in a position of power here.

Have they? There's not much about QPR's interest in him beyond saying that QPR and Fulham are being usurped by Southampton for his signature. There's news that QPR are to sign Fabio on loan from Man Utd and he can play at left back or right back and they're also after Senagalese CB Ba too. The fact that Buttner wants to come here gives us a degree of power over proceedings, as if Vitesse keeps him, it is not much good having a disgruntled player in your team.

Can we try realising he isn't a left back and has played predominantly in midfield

I would imagine that QPR would offer double the wages that we would, when you consider the wages the likes of Robert Green and Barton are on there. I'd expect him to sign for QPR if they have agreed a fee with Vitesse.

Sorry - have you actually read the thread or any of the articles?

Recap: Buttner knows what has been offered by both parties because he spoke to QPR, Fulham and Saints. He knows their offers, setups, training ground etc.

He has publically said he wants to join Saints.

We are now in the process of agreeing a fee.

If the fee is agreed he will join us.

If not, he might go to QPR, someone else, or stay at Vitesse.

Well, we'll have to wait and see. But as I say, News Now is not exactly full of how QPR are front runners for his signature. He hardly warrants a mention, except in the context that he wants to go to us.

That isn't true, he is a left back. He says so himself.

In the Ajax youth, I played playmaker and at Vitesse as left winger or left midfielder. I never wanted to be a left back. I think most left backs started as wingers or midfielders. Look at Bogarde, Van Bronckhorst, Numan… They started as creative players but found their spot. Most scouts don’t look at defenders in the youth, do they? They’re always focused on creative players… But I started to like the spot. I’m now 22 years old and have 90 Eredivisie games behind my name and half of those as left back. John van den Brom is responsible for this. He clearly sees it in me.

As a former winger, I think i can take that experience with me into the game. I know how to make them feel there is nothing going for them when they play against me…. And as a former winger, I love moving up and engaging in the attack. I had several wingers talking to me on the pitch… “Are you going forward again??”. Most wingers hate running after a full back. I gain confidence every week… I played against the best wingers in the Eredivisie and none of them played me off the pitch. On the contrary, I owned them all….”

"On the contrary, I owned them all….” - Confident isn't he!? :D

Best send in a suggestion to correct the information contained here, then:-

either that or this one.

He started his career in midfield and has converted to a left back with Vitesse. So he can play either role (midfield centre of left side apparently). At the end of the day if we are recuiting players who can only play in one of the 11 positions on the pitch they need to be bloody good at it or they need to adapt. Otherwise they are not much use to us.

It does make me smile how people on here like to state as fact what is basically just speculation and newspaper gossip. 99% of the posters on here know absolutely feck all about this or any other transfer. And now all this 'speculation' is starting to upset poor old Alpine. Don't get me wrong this is a football forum and we all love a bit of gossip but you do have to take things with a pinch of salt.

i think if you look back at any of the links on this thread we are well past the term 'gossip' on this one

He says he is now a left back, in the same way Bale is no longer a left back.

Doh. He says he is a left back because he is playing at left back currently. Just as Bale could easily move back to playing there. Most of Buttners games were in midfoeld. Given we have four left backs already and no LM is it too much of an extreme leap to suggest we might want him to play in the postion where he has spent most of his career?

No LM? Has lallana gone missing ? Thought it was RM we had noone

Could it be that we're looking to play this lad on the right of midfield ? Adkins likes players who can cut in and play quite narrow there, hence playing Guly and Chaplow on the right, rather than De Ridder.

Just a thought, although he's probably being bought for the left side, but to give us back up in other positions as well.

I thought he played Guly or Chaplow there because de Ridder isn't very good.

And I wouldn't read too much into the left back / left mid position just because of the players we have there already. Dickson has already been told he is not in our plans for the season, and there has been speculation on Harding moving away, one rumour was to Sheff Wed. I certainly don't see Harding as being part of any long term Premier League plans. With Shaw most likely at least a season or two away from stepping up we're one short at LB; and if this lad can play somewhere else too then all the better. Wayne Bridge started as a left winger, moved to left back and still played the odd game in his former position (including for the national side more than once).

Maybe he just wants 2 decent left backs??

Don't know why people worry. Just because other positions need strengthening more doesn't mean you can't sign a good player when one comes along. We'll still strengthen in the key areas, it's clearly not an either/or situation.

That too. I do despair at the comments you get, "we need to be concentrating on more important areas". As if the manager doesn't know that and isn't already budgetting and making moves to do exactly just that.

£4 million for a player that's out of contract in 12 months? If that's true then those accusing us of playing hard ball are wrong, quite frankly. I think that's more than fair, given he's only ever been an Eredivise player. Remember Afonso Alves? Scored seven in one game once, averaged a goal a game. Came to these shores and couldn't have looked more out of place.

The article says 4m EURO, not £.

"vier miljoen euro"

Well I'm off to kill myself, such a mistake after reading through that article - in broken English in under 60 seconds - is unforgivable.

Still a decent sum of money for someone who has made just about 100 appearances at that level and is out of contract in 12 months.

Agree, although as it seems there is genuine competition for his signature then Vitesse are rightly trying to prise some more cash out of the deal. Butts has helped us by going public though and it may be that he would rather sit out his final year and join us next year than go to QPR now. If Vitesse know that then they will probably be forced to cave in eventually. Either way, this could drag on a bit!

I think the whole Butland deal - if it involves that kind of money - is absurd, and I wouldn't like to see us pay it. Especially when there's still a few more years in Davis and Butland himself wants first team football. Sadly we've made a rod for our own back by paying £7 million for Jay Rodriguez - again, is he even going to be fist choice?

People know all about our desire to have talented young English players, and the fact we have money to spend, and they'll want every penny they can get out of us.

With Buttner, I think we've made a decent offer. I see so many people questioning us over the fact we've only signed one player so far, as if they truly believe we're not working on bringing other players in. It emerged this week that a major motivation for Danny Guthrie joining Reading was the fact the drive to the training ground would be a lot less for him. Great reason to sign isn't it?

Sounds as if he's got his heart set on us, that being the case it might bode well.
