Quick update from my mate.

Everything agreed with player.

Fee agreed.

Just a hitch on how we pay.

They want it all in one go.. We want to pay in instalments

Sounds pretty much a done deal now then. Let's wrap this up and move on to the next!

from the reports the player is valued at circa £3m so shouldnt be a problem paying up front surely?

Unless of course we have a small budget, we have no ambition and no longewr have a billionaires estate to fund us :)

VI.nl is reporting that we can't agree on a fee and that there's quite a big difference between what we're offering and what they want. The report was published just over an hour ago so I doubt we've pretty much wrapped this one up.

What is our obsession with left-backs? This fella would be our 5th.

It's all about the quality. How obvious is it?

We only have about a dozen players who are good enough. To become at least top 12 we need at least 6 or 7 more QUALITY players REGARDLESS of who may also be hanging around the squad.

Personally think that a GK, CB, CM and RM are bigger priorities.

Given that it obvious, would this guy be first choice?

You say priorities,,,,,

Do you really think we have just one man going around doing deals?

These days it is a network of scouts, agents etc and I'm sure we have been and are in dialogue with numerous targets. Many of which we will never know about.

The days of arry redknapp types convincing a player to join are gone. Sure a player looks around but that is routine.

These days, lawyers and agents talk.

I think it is age to say that we have many deals in the offing, just that this is nearer to an end one way or another

There actually seems to be a little uncertainty on his position and we do not know NA's thinking behind this potential new player. The point I am making is that too many people simply look at the names against the position and make the assumption that if we have so many "Left-Backs (for example) on the books we therefore don't need any more.

I totally agree that GK (2 maybe), CB (x2), CM (maybe two), and RM are more important to fill but I doubt very much that the club simply works on one deal at a time. There will be many discussions and negotiations going on at this time of pre-season.

I am very keen to see what combination of CM, RM and Wingers we sign. I have a sneaky feeling that Lallana will be used more centrally this season.

If this is correct what happened to the days when clubs only got permission to speak to players AFTER the fee was agreed ?

Buttner virtually put in a transfer request and his club allowed him to speak to English clubs. However the club he choses must strike a deal with them before they grant his transfer.

The most important part from that Dutch article is this...

Southampton offers Vitesse too little for Büttner

Agree about Lallana, I'd like to see him running at centre-backs more often.

I understand we a re probably multi-tasking on deals - it does seem strange though as Adkins spent good money on a LB only last year and we have a good young prospect coming through in that position - that's all

Harding and Dickson will leave. Shaw is not ready to be a fully fledged regular and fox needs real competition. He doesn't have that

how about we actually see one of them leave before we bring another in. I know Blackpool eventually went down, but is Dickson actually worse than Stephen Crainey? He was first choice I might add.

Dickson is a L1 left back in all honesty, might do a job for a club like Barnsley in the champ - but I can't see him above that level, and I think Crainey is better (not by much, as he isn't great) than Dickson and possibly Harding.

Surely this could be people within vitesse just leaking information to try and get Fulham or QPR to put in a rival bid to ours.

Fulham, at least, aren't in the running - they've been outbid by us and they won't go back. Fayed is balancing the books these days.

Blackpool got relegated scoring goals for fun, their defence was shocking, not least Stephen Crainey.

Dickson is not good enough for a Premier League squad, we need to let him go and bring in someone else. I don't mind in which order, but both need to happen.

far too intelligent a comment for this forum.

Its almost the opposite.

Saints know that the player wants to, and has agreed in principle, to join us. Therefore, we can play hardball over the fee knowing that Buttner will also be applying pressure.

If we want him enough we will eventually agree a fee, but if by stalling for a few days we can pay less than that makes complete sense, knowing that the player doesn't really want to go to Fulham or QPR.

QPR have put in a bid thats been accepted, Saints have to match that for him to go to SMS. If they dont match then he either goes to QPR or stays at Vitesse.

Saints are not in a position of power here.

This. Buttner has even said he likes the new Vitesse coach and hinted if he doesnt get this move he will stay and walk away for nothing next season.

They are because the player wants to come here, and Buttner has a good relationship with his club. Of course they will want a good deal but player power counts for a lot.

I'm sure if it appears it's QPR or bust. He will have a look and say all the nice things about them too

Well we are really. The player wants to play for us. Good luck if Vitesse force him to sign for QPR against his wishes!

Money talks, Plus I suspect that Mark Hughes will showcase a similar vision for QPR going forward.

Of course he will. But he has said he wants to play for Saints, so if we want to sign him then we will. if we don't then we won't. We hold the power as we know the fee they want, and know the player wants to sign here.

It's just words. Let's not pretend otherwise. Should we not be the prime club to sign him. Bet he will soon forget about saints

We weren't the prime club to sign him when he looked around. He could have opted for Fulham or QPR but wanted to join Saints. We just have to agree a fee now and then will sign him. We are in the strong position.

He might well end up elsewhere, but don't really understand your point, as QPR had agreed a feee they were the prime club, and he didn't say he wnated to join them. He said he wanted to join Saints...so im sure he is prepared to wait for the clubs to agree a fee.

OK so we have made a bid. Some talk of it being the right money but the wrong terms, then we start to see QPR have made a bid.

Now, let's see, what is NC's track record in buying players when things start to go all "changing by the hour"?

Methinks the horses head is already in the DHL box

Next player speculation time

I think both Fox and Harding were made to look "ordinary" at times last season as Lallana went missing defensively at times. I think both Buttner (if he signs) and Fox could both play a LM role with Harding at LB if needed. Either way, our flanks will need to work much harder defensively this year.

I'm wondering if he is more cover for Lallana rather than Fox. Having Buttner on the left might open up the opportunity to play 4 - 4 - 1 - 1 with Lallana in the Hole.

Quite possibly. Would be good to see Lallana central a bit more, but only if we had someone decent out on the left.

It does make me smile how people on here like to state as fact what is basically just speculation and newspaper gossip. 99% of the posters on here know absolutely feck all about this or any other transfer. And now all this 'speculation' is starting to upset poor old Alpine. Don't get me wrong this is a football forum and we all love a bit of gossip but you do have to take things with a pinch of salt.
