Strange position for NA to focus on, what with Danny Fox there.

How about a new CB and RM ?

He's left-sided, not necessarily to be used as a left-back.

IMO I think we can do better than Fox anyway for the Prem.

Does seem strange, but maybe we are planning to play more with wingbacks? Or maybe Buttner would be earmarked for midfield with Lallana moving inside a bit?

Who knows but feel we might be some different systems being used this season as well as the ones we have played until now.

Bit strange that we've strengthened with a striker and (possibly) a left back first of all, probably our two strongest areas.

It is possible to have numerous targets all at once. We don't know what else he is planning.

Harding and Dickson aren't really Premier League quality, so maybe Adkins wants Fox and Buttner as his left backs and will let Harding and Dickson go and have Shaw for the future.

Maybe there will be one of our left backs moving on as a result? We get the replacement in before we let one leave.

Not sure the timing indicates the importance put on the position. Deals get done when deals get done, and if you get the opportunity to sign someone, you do it, especially if they become available and others are sniffing around.

Pretty sure NA is not just looking at one position at a time, ticking it off when complete, then looking to the next one.

Of course. But on the assumption we're going to buy a goalkeeper, a centre back, a centre mid and possibly a right sided midfielder, that's a very big influx of new players for one summer....

Im pretty certain they will have drawn up a list of 50 or so players who CDAJFU in the prem, and they have enquired about the ones they mostly want with other backups in those positions. Im sure its not, ST, done tick that off....LB, yep done, tick that off. No reason why we cant be looking at completing multiple deals. We need to !

If this guy has pace then he maybe he will be earmarked to play at LB when the opposition have a fast wide player for example Nani, Walcott, Lennon. As much as Fox is a good player and his set pieces are key to our game he does struggle against genuine pace. Also Lallana admitted on saturday that he has to carefully manage his groins otherwise he will risk getting injured. So this lad could be a good addition for us as it seems he can slot in at both LB and LM.

I'm expecting Harding to move on I guess. Can't see Danny Fox being the sort of player that is happy sitting on the bench as back-up, so it'd be a bit of interesting competition if we were to bring this dutch lad in.

One of the interviews said he played as CM playmaker for Ajax academy, striker for Vitesse at first, then winger and now more recently left back. Its probably his versatility that attracts and I doubt he is seen as a direct replacement for Fox.

Dickson has already been told he's being frozen out, and I've read rumours that Harding may be on his way to Sheff Wed. In either case neither player are good enough for the PL IMO, so its natural we look to improve. Wouldn't have classed it as an area that was in most need of strengthening, but plenty of time for more signings yet.

You mean they have their own list and don't just use the saintsweb HCDAJFU thread?.................weird!!!

This just in on Sky sports, he definitely wants to come here, I wonder what we are paying him to get that reaction about St Mary's lolololol - I suppose, compared to Loftus Road and Craven Cottage it must look like a mini old trafford :D

Vitesse rejected 1.6mill (2million Euros) from Fulham so looks like being in the region of £2mill. Judging by the articles about this you'd have to think we're on the brink of confirming this guy. Only just missed out on Dutch squad. Promising.

I was just thinking this too. Do we really need another left back?

Yes. Harding, Dickson and Shaw are not good enough for the Premier League, the first 2 should leave. Fox is decent enough but he's the only one and not without his faults.

Seems this bloke is pretty handy in midfield too and we need someone else apart from Lallana.

Not worried about timing, I am more worried about budget constraints, and therefore priorities.

I still think anyone who believes we are going to have a 25-30million transfer window deserves to be sectioned.

Why? If the rumour that we bid 3m is true, we would have spent 9m on two players in a window where we'll need 6-8 new faces to really beef up the squad quality wise. Wouldn't shock me if we spent 25m this summer, even the cheaper signings add up.

Buttner wants to sign for us, ahead of Fulham and QPR, we are offering him a 3 year contract. We are currently in negotiation with Vitesse about the price.

I had a look for recent stories on News Now from Fulham and QPR, but could find nothing about their interest in him. So the stories have either gone cold regarding them, or else it is all a lot of hot air.

Wouldn't take the sheer number of articles saying basically the same things as evidence the deal is nearly done. Got a mate who is a sports journo, agencies are commissioned to produce 'x' number of articles a day - he was telling me t'other day that they basically look for a story (usually foreign ones, to translate), rehash and post on. This seems quite widespread practice, so a proliferation of stories about the same thing is no sure sign a deal is imminent.

Don't know anything about the guy, so would be harsh to comment. Agree that Dickson & Harding probably aren't going to be up to it in the Prem (along with a few others still in the squad) so there probably will be strengthening made throughout.

I trust Adkins, so if it does happen let's get behind the lad!

There's two first hand reports (they actually spoke with Büttner) in the last 24h. The first is an interview with a local radio station (Omroep Gelderland) where he confirms he's been in Southampton and was very impressed. Then there is an article in de Telegraaf which I haven't read, but the soccernews.nl story posted earlier has de Telegraaf as its source.

The deal seems close in my opinion and I'd be very surprised if it doesn't go through now.

Quick update from my mate.

Everything agreed with player.

Fee agreed.

Just a hitch on how we pay.

They want it all in one go.. We want to pay in instalments

Good job Vitesse are not dealing with the Skates

Their policy would be "We don't pay at all "
