Excited about this, for the same reason I get excited over all foreign players. I have absolutely no idea who he is and based on my football betting record he must therefore be amazing.

Let's hope he's more Marian Pahars than Mikael Nilsson :)

Dutch Journo on Twitter

Alexander Buttner with his agent in England. Southampton, Fulham and QPR are interested. Departure seems prominent Vitesse.

Just a general search for Alexander Buttner brings up many latest reports with the word Southampton included in the headline. This one could definitely be a goer i think.

De Gelderlander, Vi.nl and Ad.nl are reliable sites and they are all reporting Büttner has been negotiating with is but we do not have an agreement with Vitesse (we haven't even made a bid). It shouldn't be a problem though since he only has one year left on his contract so he can't be too expensive (but he's not available on a free as the OP writes).

I haven't seen him play too much, I mainly follow Ajax in the Netherlands but from what I have seen its his strengths are his offensive qualities, which isn't weird considering he was a winger earlier in his career. He's still learning some aspects of his defensive game (positioning) but he's tenacious and wins challenges quite often.

Maybe we want him to return to playing as a winger / LM. Thats certainly where we need more players.

Maybe with him and fox both on the left they can each provide cover for the other, and could strike up a partnership like that of Marsden/Bridge. We could then play Lallana in a more central role where he can be much more dangerous and more involved.

Was in their Euro squad but unused.

Interesting if true shows we look to buy "better" than we have.

He was in their preliminary squad but was cut for the final 23 prior to them flying out to Poland.

Asked a Dutch friend about this guy this afternoon. Said he has the potential to be a top player, already great going forward and his defending is improving quickly. Reckons Van Marwijk made a mistake in not taking him to Euro 2012.

@deromis: Alexander #Buttner heeft zijn laatste training bij Vitesse voltooid en vertrekt waarschijnlijk naar #Southampton #Vitesse

Translates to...

@deromis: # Alexander Buttner has completed his final workout at Vitesse, and probably departs Southampton to # # Vitesse

Seems he's had his final session at Vitesse.

@deromis is just some supporter copying news from a unreliable football website in the Netherlands. Neither VI.nl or de Gelderlander have reported anything new so my guess is that nothing is imminent. As far as I know we haven't even made a bid yet.

I think that our new kit is a very clever ploy to fool a lot of top class players into thinking that they are signing for another premiership team based in a city which also has a famous port. Pretty clever move by NC.

out of interest, how would you know either way?

Because the Dutch news papers wrote that we hadn't made a bid on friday when they wrote he was coming for a visit. Since they haven't reported any other news concerning this transfer my best guess would be nothing more has happened so far. De Gelderlander has rather close contacts to Vitesse (they're a regional newspaper operating out of Arnhem) so I'd expect them to write an update to their earlier article if we had made a bid.

Another Dutch mate of mine told me he had to leave Ajax because his dad apparently punched one of the youth coaches, also said he can play LM and LW so maybe we seeing him as a back to Lallana.

If we do buy this guy, can I claim to be ITK?

Anyone can claim to be ITK but only those with true inner sight can truly be ITK...

Update: Büttner did an interview after his training session with Vitesse with a local radio station where he said that he was "very impressed with what he saw" and that he quite possibly just finished his last training session with Vitesse. The technical director at Vitesse confirmed that there's a big chance Büttner is leaving (but didn't mention Saints and to be honest, its been clear he's going to leave this summer for some time).

If that's true, Buttner is actually quoted in there saying that he has his eyes set on 'Southampton.'

The rumors that Alexander Büttner before the start of this season is leaving Vitesse is growing every day. The player would itself around with Southampton making it a matter of time before the player is left from Arnhem

Last season he made a strong development in Arnhem and that is in England not gone unnoticed. Among Queens Park Rangers and Southampton showed interest in recent weeks, and the player keeps itself also takes a departure for the latter team.

"I have my eyes looked at Southampton," says Büttner on Friday in England against England Broadcasting. The left sees a move or sit. "If you can play in the Premier League, you may be very proud. It may be that I am here today for the last time on the field stand in the training of Vitesse.

Is he any good?

No idea, sounds like an attack minded player who has been scouted by some decent level clubs, so there's obviously talent there.

I would imagine he's to add competition to Fox, he seems like a naturally attacking full back and attacking full backs were a massive part of our game last year, so it makes sense to upgrade them.

Yeh, we need some bulk added to our left side. So he seems like an attacking wing-back who could cover for Lallana?

Sounds versatile in that sense, he could play as a wing back or an attacking left mid. Not sure he's massively defense minded though.

I hope he's better than our last attacking import from Holland...

The rumors that Alexander Büttner yet for the beginning of this season is the day departs at Vitesse with bigger. The leftback who played ahead of him in Euros had a 'mare. Doesn't seem the Dutch are too blessed in that position.

In English...

Büttner: "Southampton to Manchester City chasing"

Alexander Büttner currently has only one wish: that Vitesse reached an agreement with Southampton for his transfer to seal. The left trained Sunday along with his employer Arnhem, but the chance is real that the last time.

"I want to Southampton", as the defender falls straight to the house. "I am awaiting the clubs come out, but count on the cooperation of Vitesse." Büttner has a contract that expires after this season and can count on the interest of several clubs. Southampton was in 2009 taken over by a billionaire and promoted last season to the Premier League.

The Saints seem headed by billionaire willing to make the most money down. "It would be a very big disappointment when this did not happen," says Büttner. "I've been in Southampton and everything - to the living conditions to it - is perfect. Club, the stadium and the reception really surprised me. Beautiful. And Southampton has large ambitions. With the new lender they want Manchester City chasing."
