Great interview!

Loved the bit about the stadium expansion, and the 2 billionaire owners (?) but the bit that made me smile was the bit about him sat down with his family watching a DVD of the club from past to present (season ticket dvd?) and they had put his face etc in it! Brilliant way of enticing players to show them that these 'dreams' could become a reality!

Nigel goes on about signing the right type of player and making them feel wanted and this shows exactly how they do it! You can see now why Clyne apparently turned down a top 4 club to come here!

It does feel like we go the extra mile to get signings done, like making them feel really wanted. Things like that can swing a players thoughts away from money, and potentially gives us am edge. I assume we did the same with Clyne too

Lets not start going on about how Clyne turned down a top four club to come here. That's just some random person who said that on the internet. Clyne is a good signing though and I hope Buttner follows him. Just three more after that I feel and we are set (maybe four if we are greedy)

That was an interesting read and one that totally changed my mind. If Büttner still believes this deal is going through (and is willing to say so in an interview) then why should I be doubting it? Apart from the way we managed to make him choose Saints with the DVD and all there is a tiny bit of information that is perhaps even more interesting. In the part where he describes his chat with NA he says that NA sees him as an offensive leftback. Earlier we've been speculating that he perhaps would be used as a winger but this says to me that not only is Dickson on the way out but this also means Harding is on his way. In a 25 man squad you don't have room for 3 leftbacks.

Buttner would block Shaw's path to the team.

Shaw clearly class...maybe the staff feel him and Fox are enough for LB?

Sounds like this deal will still happen though, going by the latest. NA and co would have been well aware of shaw for months, but still wanted to go for buttner.

Look,

All we can do at the moment is a "mid-term" report on FACTS. What HAS happened on the transfer market at Saints. And then ask the question: are the FACTS ofour transfer activity ENOUGH to keep us in the PL ?

So, we have bought J-Rod, good-looking striker, great potential, and Steven Davis who it is not clear if he is even permitted to play for us, but seeing as he didnt participate in the Memorial Cup it seems currently that he is NOT permitted. The FACTS are we have no GK cover, and have no decent CB cover. Also there are doubts we are strong enough in centre midfield for this division. Fact or not ?

So based on FACTS, our transfer period so far is underwhelming and disappointing. Maybe our management were a bit naiive about their ability to secure targets at this level and with the club widely perceived to have a healthy bank balance.

Based on FACTS, our transfer period does not look strong enough to keep us in this division.

I can't see this post being far from the truth, but the Steven Davis deal is done, absolutely no doubt about that one. The SFA have no budget and would not stick their nose into this one because there is absolutely no need. FIFA will sort this and the only reason for the delay has been Rangers not officially assigned to a league.

The players we have brought in are improvements over what we have but there is a very big question mark over whether they area sufficient improvement to survive. We seem to be paying a lot of money for what most of the promoted clubs gained for little when they came up last season. We need the spine of the team able to compete in the Premier and I just don't see it at present from the gk, cb's to cf. Midfield should be capable of putting up some fight but for opening up teams not so sure. Then again we don't know what Adkins is going to do with these players in pre-season because I was gob smacked with what he did last time round.

It all appears that few at the club know what's going to hit them in the Premier and by the time we find out will be seriously on the back foot. But I will not bet against Adkins not pulling the rabbit out of the hat like he did at the start of last season.

Doesn't sound like there is anything new in that interview though...not sure Buttner knows what's happening, why hasn't it happened if problems have been resolved for a while now?

Buttner would play left midfield since thats where he has been playing for his currant club. Looks to me that we will be doing a 451 formation which attacking is a 433 and Buttner can play anywhere down the left. I reckon Chung and Buttner would be our left midfield players and Lallana will swap to the right side with SDR as backup. Shaw and Fox will be our main LB's and to give shaw a run out if we're winning, Buttner would go left back with Shaw going left mid (thats where he playing atm against that french team).

You haven't read the article then. He says he is a left back and that Saints want him to play as an offensive left back.

That's what I think as well, means we can bed Shaw in without rushing him or needing to loan him out. Left side is a specialist position and to have the quality of players we'll potentially have could give Saints a real competitive advantage next term. Would definately push ahead with this deal but still not 100% sure it'll happen.

Once you get this third party come out and lay claim to part of the transfer deal you have to deal with it professionally. Otherwise this can come back at another time requiring payment from possibly any of those involved. No one can ignore this now as it has been brought into the public domain and will require signing off before hand officially, even if the third party is his father. I would imagine as the third party is no longer getting paid? there is really no incentive from them to proceed speedily. Alternatively Saints have to trawl through this with there own legal team to ensure there are no later repercussions, same for the player.

'It lies on the coast, half an hour from London by Steve De Ridder' - He's quick, but I'm not sure he has the stamina to get all the way to London with someone on his back!

Sounds like we may get some information on this if Simon Peach gets the correct phone number...

SimonPeach: Just called Büttner's agent to find out what is happening with #SaintsFC. Unfortunately, I had the wrong number & got a bemused Dutch bloke.

Clearly not happening and with the emergence of Shaw it might not be a bad thing.

i wonder if the chelsea interest in shaw made us re think on our approach for buttner. maybe shaw was interested in going but saints have since given him certain assurances regarding 1st team opportunities hence us cooling on buttner.

i dont think it is a real loss because shaw can play the attacking full back/wing back role in any case plus no one had heard of buttner prior to his link with us.

That is Football League thinking to think the emergence of Shaw is the reason behind any deal falling through. We're going for Europe and therefore will be in need of a very strong squad. I believe if the deal was off the club would say so in the way they did last year with Coventry over the player who said he was signing for Saints. Buttner is probably an option but could be we've got positive news on a better option.

He does need to shake off his dell sized mentality I give you that. However, is Buttner head and shoulders above Shaw? Enough for you to speculate that it's football league thinking to suggest having shaw over Buttner?

shaw playing a few mins in friendlies against other pre season teams is hardly going to make anyone at the club stop and go "hold on, who is this we have here"

Exactly. I highly doubt that we have fundamentally changed our transfer dealings just because of a couple of pre season games. At any rate, I would like Shaw to be brought in gradually.

I'd like to see Shaw have a loan spell in the championship/l1 so he can have a run of games where he plays every week. Would do him more good than playing in the development squad or playing a couple of cup games.

One of the parts of the recruitment process seems to be getting players in for a couple of days to see if he fits with the rest of the team personality and temperament wise. Maybe Buttner bombed this part and the 'dad' cut was the final nail.

Of course, they will know all about the lads ability regardless. Doesn't mean that there haven't been recent discussions about pushing a bit further than planned. Especially when you consider that Chelsea and others are sniffing around. If Shaw can't see a way into the side in the next 2 years than he might as well go to Chelsea.

What has changed recently that would mean that the plans are accelerated? They must have known about his ability beforehand and a couple of weeks ago we were set to sign this guy. I highly doubt we scrapped this because we suddenly decided to go with Shaw instead.

As I said, if other clubs are sniffing around, what can we offer Shaw that he wouldn't get elsewhere? The prospect of first team football over the coming season or two is about the only thing.

Maybe the lad or his agent or whatever have had a word with the club about his ambitions. This could all happen in a space of a couple of weeks quite conceivably.

If we haven't targeted another left back by end of the transfer window then I'd be confident that this is the case.

who else is he going to go to (after just signing a contract by the way) that will offer him more football than us..?

No one but that's the point. If he sees another young left back join the club, what would that say about his chances in the immediate future? Might as well go elsewhere on probably more money at a more glamorous club if you have the opportunity to do so....that's if you're not playing football of course.
