May, June and July gave Saints fans the luxury of living in their fantasy world, but as we approach August reality is just around the corner and it is going to smack some fans hard and right between the eyes !

You're so right. It happened last season as well. Some dreamers never learn. I guess one smack isnt ebnough.

Steven Naismith (Everton) - played Morecambe but he didn't play.

Steven Whittaker (Norwich) - first friendly is on 21st away to Hertha Berlin.

Rhys McCabe and Sone Aluko (both free agents) were the original 4

Steven Davis has joined us and not played yet, see above for Lafferty.

Although its not clear whether he didn't play because of the clearance or due to his fitness, Adkins suggested he was not fit. I don't actually see anything stopping players taking part in friendlies, even if as a Trialist, unless it is for insurance purposes.

I think this deal is dead in the water. Looks like we are going for the 'Blackpool' scenario. See how we get on but happy to get relegated and collect the premier money !

Dalek, we've spent 7m in this window and have made offers in the region of another 10m already.

Suggest to you that grabbing parachute payments is not the be-all and end-all of our efforts this season, NC wants us to genuinely succeed.

I will concede however, that at this point in time our transfer activity seems to have petered out.....

After your good-natured mocking of your own 17th place prediction for last season I thought you'd wised up a little.

Nobody's saying that a few new signings wouldn't strengthen us but equally it's not worth getting hysterical yet. Even if the Buttner deal is dead in the water (and there's little other than supposition to say it is), there's no reason to suggest we can't or won't sign an equal or better player in his stead.

Fairly sure that Swansea had only signed 2 players by this point last Summer - they had a flurry of late activity and further strengthened in January. Splashing the cash early is not the only option. Blimey, do people genuinely think that the backroom staff are sitting on their hands, or locked away in a darkened room with fingers in ears repetitively whispering "everything will be OK!"?

Leicester, Ipswich and Wet Spam spent money hand over fist last summer and we outdid the lot of them..

Wise signings are whats required, not a whole new bloody squad!

Is this a cut and paste from 17 July 2011?

Tell me Mr. Dalek, how many notable transfers have taken place anywhere so far this summer? When does the window close? Your boundless optimism is an inspiration to us all.

I will continue to ramp it up until we seriously strengthen the squad.

The yellow light is flashing, the alarm bell is ringing and its getting louder !

Instead of bleating on here to bunch of people who have no say in our transfer activity why don't you bombard the club with this valuable insight? Presumably its that you know you are talking out of your sonic screwdriver? ;-)

Yes I agree. The problem is getting these deals over the line. We need to be decisive and soon because if we can stay in the Prem this year then we could set ourselves up for many years to come like Stoke for example.

I think it would be an idea to see a doctor tomorrow if possible. Flashing lights and ringing sounds serious.

I am not sure Daleks are very keen on seeing the doctor, the doctor always seems to come out best.

Earlier statements did suggest that Adkins would have liked a couple more new signings on board before the bus set off to Lake Geneva but transfer decisions don't depend only on the buying club and we know that some bids have floundered and that others, such as Buttner, might fail. While the squad is in France it seems unlikely that deals will be finalised so I wouldn't expect much more to happen until at least the end of the month. After that we have Adkin's own opinion on the positions where he needs to recruit, which is not a wholeasale disruption of the squad but does offer genuine strengthening subject to the quality of the players brought in. If the quality of the two signings so far is anything to go on, I can't see that there is much to worry about.

Yeah doomed mate, just like Swansea last summer. From what I can tell they bought seven players last summer. As far as I am aware, up until the same time last year they'd only signed two of those. Graham who obviously had a good season and a reserve goalkeeper who never played. The other five included Vorm, Tremmel (another non playing keeper), Routledge & Lita (squad players) and Situ (never played).

Hardly sets the world alight does it?

It's worse than that.

Not yellow - amber or red.

One untried player in for a huge £7m and one (blocked) N Irish midfielder wrapped up in legals.

We need August to come around very slowly if we are to have even a fighting chance now, I'd say.

I'm thinking like S Clarke that this is Jemal MkII and has been a non-deal for a few days. Pity, as Fox needs competition and it also offers the option of Lallana moving infield away from home into a 4-5-1. We don't know the facts or what the player's representatives 'asked for' but I'm not expecting to see anything on the OS soon about this.

A couple of updated articles today in Holland. Seems the deal may yet still go through.

Aissati and Büttner not travel back to Bulgaria

By Robin Bairner __ Photo: ORANGE PICTURES __ published on July 18, '12 10:47

Vitesse plays Thursday without Ismail Aissati and Alexander Büttner against Lokomotiv Plovdiv . Aissati has not yet signed and Büttner seems to feed upon a transfer.

Vitesse flies Wednesday to Bulgaria for the Europa League match against Lokomotiv Plovdiv . Aissati initially appeared to play along, but the new contract has not been signed.

"It takes a little longer than expected, but we are still talking," said a spokeswoman for Vitesse against ANP . "If it is still pending, it would be no point to take him.

Aissati therefore remains as Büttner behind in Netherlands . The left still hopes his transfer to Premier League club Southampton to complete.

http://optimaalfm.nl/index.php/id_pagina/26070/buttner-nog-niet-naar-southampton.html

Pending his transfer to Southampton, Alexander Buttner maintains his physical fitness to the promise of Vitesse. The left Doetinchem few days ago took leave of Vitesse, but his transition to the club from the premier league is still not deep. Buttner began his career in the youth of VV Doetinchem. At age 11 he moved to Ajax, but five years later he chose for the youth of Vitesse. Buttner debuted on March 15, 2008 in a match which he also two yellow and therefore a red card was ejected . A total of Doetinchem defender played 107 games for Vitesse. He scored ten goals.

The only thing that stops me thinking it's completely dead in the water is that Vitese have been so quick to post updates on their OS I can't help but think they would have announced if it had fallen through.

I still think we might get this one done eventually.

I often agree with you but don't get too worried. Look what we did in in the nPC when many predicted we 'd do well to stay up.

Never under-estimate the oppos but equally don't over-estimate them either. "Up there" is where we were for 27 years without a shed-full of super stars and mercenaries.

In Saints we trust must be our motto - when the going gets tough the oppo will get stuffed!

All you need do is get your belief back

The only problem with all this is unleass you are a part of the Saints team negotiating our tranfers nobody has the foggiest idea as to whether we are hours, days, weeks or months away from closing out our targets. Anything else is pure speculation!

I expect this deal will happen soon. He isn't with Vitesse on their tour of Bulgaria for a reason...

I have no doubt in my mind Büttner is leaving Vitesse but I'm getting more and more doubtful if Saints are going to be the destination. His position at Vitesse is very difficult since they already have a replacement for him, this is why he's not going to Bulgaria with them. But I'm becoming more and more sceptical that we'll be the ones signing him. For that to happen either Vitesse has share the transfer-fee (not likely), Saints have to pay of the 3rd party (doesn't really sound like Cortese does it?) or Büttner has to strike a deal with the 3rd party. Perhaps Büttner can make the problem go away but why would this take so long?

His agent was saying the 3rd party thing was resolved. So did Vitesse. Sounds like if it doesn't happen its because we sdon't want him anymore.

Having seen Shaw on Saturday, I can potentially see why that might be the case, all depends where we had intended to use him.

Look,

All we can do at the moment is a "mid-term" report on FACTS. What HAS happened on the transfer market at Saints. And then ask the question: are the FACTS ofour transfer activity ENOUGH to keep us in the PL ?

So, we have bought J-Rod, good-looking striker, great potential, and Steven Davis who it is not clear if he is even permitted to play for us, but seeing as he didnt participate in the Memorial Cup it seems currently that he is NOT permitted. The FACTS are we have no GK cover, and have no decent CB cover. Also there are doubts we are strong enough in centre midfield for this division. Fact or not ?

So based on FACTS, our transfer period so far is underwhelming and disappointing. Maybe our management were a bit naiive about their ability to secure targets at this level and with the club widely perceived to have a healthy bank balance.

Based on FACTS, our transfer period does not look strong enough to keep us in this division.

I think he would potentially just be another option on the left hand side. We currently have Fox (who isn't amazing), Lallana who is going to start the majority of games but he does get injured and also will be used in the middle no doubt, and then Harding who is ****, and Shaw who is 17. Would be nice to have another option to these, so would be well worth it if it's not a lot of money. He wants to come here, if this issue is resolved, then we should get him IMO.
