alpine_saint Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 The issue was only between Vitesse and the player/agent. All this speculation that NC will suddenly pull out because of it is nonesense, no matter how much people would like to believe that to be the case. Why don't people wait and see what happens before sharpening their daggers ready for NC. The club have done nothing wrong here. Erm, who said they have ? We are just discussing how NC reacts to the events of the past 36 hours.

up and away Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 Peter White @peterwhite_1 OK Saints fans will put you out of your misery. Buttner deal broken down because his dad, not any agent, wants a slice of the fee #saintsfc That sounds about right but I would imagine his father has been acting as his advisor, otherwise why the commitment to a % fee of any transfer? Being father and son the agreement could be verbal rather than written, hence the slip through the cracks. The agent in this interview believes the deal will still go through, maybe? When the agent talks about reducing the number of instalments, I can only assume this applies to the agents side of things as Saints and Vitesse have already come to a firm agreement. Cortese will have a price he is prepared to pay for the player and act accordingly. But if he believes he is being shown the pikey 3 card trick at this stage, he could walk on principle. It must be very difficult for someone from a business environment where these horse trading manoeuvres are used regularly in football. The first thought must be to put as much distance between them and yourself as quickly as possible, tempered by the fact the profession is littered with the like. You will have heard Adkins mention this several times previously regarding players. If during the course of negotiations you uncover Anelka's brother or some trait others have shown which goes on to reveal it's best not touching these players with a barge pole. Then you are going to reassess the character side of things pretty pronto. This could all be a simple error by the player which has little effect should he decide to put things right out of his own pocket or his football skills diminish such an occurrence. But without a doubt things are not the same as they were previously and only a fool would not factor everything in. Otherwise why spend all that effort on character profiling with the alternative being the Joey Bartons of this world.
Greenridge Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 Well my point was generally aimed at those on this thread suggesting Vitesse should adopt this 'Southampton Way". In reality Vitesse have done the right thing - it looks like they have agreed a fee to sell this player to us and that is what they have told their fans. I would expect Saints to do the same thing. Whether they would or not is debatable. Saints have a clearly stated policy that they will not comment on conjecture or rumours and only once deals have been done. I doubt they'll change this approach just to appease you.

Maybe we should start a chant up about how brilliant our clearly stated policies are. It is always encouraging for management of any type of business to have feedback from their customers that their policies generally meet with widespread approval, so if anybody in the club's management reads this forum, they will be pleased with this metaphorical pat on the back. Regarding the chant, we already have one:- "We do what we want, we do what we want, we are Southampton, we do what we want." If that sounds a bit too arrogant for your liking, because the proposal of a new chant was yours, I'm sure that most on here will be happy to leave it up to you to come up with something suitably appropriate and yet catchy and witty at the same time. Agree that it is difficult to get anything to rhyme with policy, but that need not be a problem. The line could refer to policies that are sound, so that then you could end the next line with ground, for example. Lots of alternative adjectives to describe the policies that have easy rhyming words in the next line, such as Sublime - time Unique - up the creek Right - bright Great - first rate. etc, etc.

My argument would not so much be that its arrogant (it is), but that its a chant that was nicked from Manchester United. In which case, its not unique, and therefore certainly not striving for the "best in class both on and off the pitch" mantra that the club keeps aspiring to. if we're truly going to top that summit then we'll need a chant that is all our own and better than all others, rather than some cheap gimmicky rip-off from another club. CB Fry Posted 11 July, 2012 Share Posted 11 July, 2012 I'm guessing this character profiling was not part of the Pardew set up? If it was we surely wouldn't have the Puncheon situation now? This is the same Alan Pardew that made it his business to bomb out the overpaid old guard at Newcastle, replace them with cheaper, younger replacements with the right attitude and got them to fifth. Pardew talked a lot about character when he was at Saints too. No one is ever going to get every single signing right and Puncheon is a better player than, say, Forte even if Forte is an amazing character. I was merely speculating, the club might have learnt a lesson from the Puncheon signing and looked more closely at character profiling afterwards. Earlier this week threatened a third party that additional requirements proposed direction Vitesse transition to unsettle. According to the AD that problem is now resolved, so Büttner final glance at England can focus. The player will be tested today or tomorrow.
