doddisalegend Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 Have you noticed that McGuinness is now the deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. Strange sort of "victory". Strange how he was happy to give up 30 years of armed struggle as soon as the chance for a nice job in the Northern Irish goverment came up. Almost as if his convictions were never that strong. doddisalegend Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 Personally I always thought that through the troubles the IRA were lucky they were dealing with the British goverment who, despite one or two incidents, were pretty restrained when dealing with the crisis and not someone like Israel who would have probably leveled the border counties to a wasteland and launched airstrikes on Dublin for good measure. Thedelldays Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 (edited) Personally I always thought that through the troubles the IRA were lucky they were dealing with the British goverment who, despite one or two incidents, were pretty restrained when dealing with the crisis and not someone like Israel who would have probably leveled the border counties to a wasteland and launched airstrikes on Dublin for good measure. when Maggie unleashed the SAS when the IRA attacked a police station...they were full of cry about escalation of violence by the british etc etc as you know, the SAS don't go in to take prisoners there are still plenty of shady people over there. all sorts still goes on but the news outlets are not so quick to report anything unless it is very serious see the queen is wearing green and gold...nice touch Edited 27 June, 2012 by Thedelldays
Sour Mash Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 I have always felt that McGuinness is a murderous scumbag who belongs in jail. However this has finally convinced me that maybe I was wrong You always thought he was a "murderous scumbag", but becasue he has now met the Queen, you don't? Right.............. Frank's cousin Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 Of course it was restrained... terrorism, is afterall an issue for the police, not the army... we were not war in Northern Island, but dealing with terror groups from both sides intent on causing as much trouble as they could... My dad did 2 tours in the 70's and 80s, and I remember well Army barrack bombings in Germany as a kid, having to have the local school bus inspected by armed squaddies before entering the school gates, or the shootings at Ferry terminals in Calais as they could recognise army personnel, by their number plates i those days...not nice. So the fact that those dehind the scenes driving this, have moved on and now take a political route is something we should all be pleased about. If this has been riven by a more economic pragmatism, so what, bt I still think in part at least its that ordinary people were just sick and tired of it and no longer supported it... change was demanded, even if it meant for uneasy aliances and strange bedfellows. Good on the Queen, she has my respect for that.
Jillyanne Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 I have to say, they both look genuine, and this still photo does suggest if not exactly warmth, at least no frostiness. Well done to both of them, and to Peter Robinson, though I still wonder about the "finer details" of McGuiness's role in Bloody Sunday. My Mum met the queen a few weeks ago and shook her hand and as I was taking the pics I can say she had the same smile/expression as meeting that idiot today. Lord Duckhunter Posted 27 June, 2012 Author Share Posted 27 June, 2012 You always thought he was a "murderous scumbag", but becasue he has now met the Queen, you don't? Right.............. What I was trying to say was that maybe McGuinness is doing the right thing for the right reasons. And maybe I was wrong to think that he should be thrown into jail. We tried throwing him and his like in jail and that just added fuel to the fire. Maybe by turning a blind eye and drawing a line, the people of NI have a "peace". It's not a "peace" that many of us would recongnise, as there are still divide's and the IRA haven't gone away, but it's a much better life than they have had for the past 30 years. LGTL Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 I agree. What I've found is younger people do not have such a romantic view of a united Ireland. My GF is Irish and I've found it depends on where they're from. Those from city areas where English is the first language are happy the way it is, but those from Irish speaking rural areas generally still long for a united Ireland. It'll stay as it is IMO as thankfully both sides just seem a bit fed up with it all these days.

Jillyanne Posted 27 June, 2012 Share Posted 27 June, 2012 Are you suggesting she had to put on a fake smile when she met your mother? No, I am 'suggesting' that she smiles when she meets everyone, no doubt she has been well conditioned to over 60 years.
