Depends on why you gave up on S4. I think S5 was better, but it isn't a high bar, and some of the cliffhangers stretched credulity, even in relation to what Disco had given us before. I think that overall, after moving into the far future, they struggled with the continuing story threads through S3-5. I would give the whole run a solid 6.5/10.

I found the writing really poor in S4, and found that I had no interest in finding out what was going to happen with the main narrative. They clearly had no idea what to do with half the characters, and it seemed to become even more specifically about Burnham than the previous seasons were. I also found that the whole "let's have an emotional crisis instead of just acting professionally and doing our jobs" thing got very tiresome. Edit: I probably would have sacked it off sooner, but I guess I just wasn't ready to accept there could be a ST series I didn't like. But eventually I resigned myself to it. In the latter 2 series there have been too many 'with one bound Jack was free' escapes, particularly with the engineering crew. Not a bad branch of the Trek universe, but not the best.

Holmes_and_Watson Posted 18 August, 2024 Posted 18 August, 2024 I saw Alien Romulus yesterday. Since Aliens takes a lot from Alien, it's not necessarily a bad thing. This one looks back, and lifts from pretty much everything across all the other films, including prequels. Not to mention what I think might be unreleased screenplays and other non film bits. Some of it works fine (and good in a couple of bits), but I was tripping into references quite a bit. There's a number of set pieces. They work to underplay the aliens, quite a bit. There's some set pieces of what would be certain death, that aren't...well, because. Looks good, sounds good, is a decent enough watch, maybe getting better if you've not seen some of the others. Not a patch on Alien and Aliens though. Sometimes, all those call backs are just reminders to the better bits of other movies, at the expense of this one. 1

I'm expecting it to be pretty derivative but it's a franchise and probably inevitable but if Alvarez can keep the tension and suspense up then I think I'll enjoy it. Least it doesn't sound like it's going to disappear up it's own arse like Prometheus and (to an extent) Covenant.

Since there's nods to everything else, there are nods there too. And each of the characters has some sort of personality/ subplot, which was also decent. Hope you enjoy it. 1
badgerx16 Posted 20 September, 2024 Posted 20 September, 2024 (edited) Just finished binge watching season 4 of Snowpiercer, via IPTV. We find out who caused the world to freeze, one of a couple of cardboard cut-out bad guys, there is a huge technological WTF moment, but it all works out well in the end - or at least as well as might be expected with the Earth still in snowball mode. Two bits of good news ; S2 of Silo due in November, and the disappointing The Acolyte will not get a second run. Edited 20 September, 2024 by badgerx16
Sheaf Saint Posted 1 October, 2024 Posted 1 October, 2024 Just activated my free 3 month subscription to Apple TV, ahead of the upcoming release of Silo S2, and have been off work with a heavy cold all week so I decided to binge all of the first (and currently only) season of Dark Matter. It's an intriguing concept and very well executed with good pacing and strong performances from the main cast (**spoiler** - very cleverly playing multiple different versions of the same character). The ending nicely sets up another season, with literally infinite possibilities of future plot direction. Glad it has been renewed because it would be such an anti-climax otherwise.
skintsaint Posted 2 October, 2024 Posted 2 October, 2024 Not sure if anyone watches it, but shame they are not making a third season of Outer Range just as it was all starting to come together.

I quite enjoyed the first season, but I haven't got round to watching S2 yet. I probably won't bother now if it's not being renewed. Shame.
Saint in Paradise Posted 16 October, 2024 Posted 16 October, 2024 I wasn't sure which was the best thread for this but here it is anyway.
badgerx16 Posted 18 December, 2024 Posted 18 December, 2024 (edited) Just started Silo S2, which will hopefully maintain the standard of S1, and also watching Dune Prophecy - which I am just about keeping track of. As an aside, in a strange piece of historical prescience, during Opearation Neptune, the overarching naval operation of which Overlord was a major part, HMS Enterprise was under the overall command of Admiral Kirk.
