Consumer advice needed

Just over a year ago, we bought a new laptop. Obviously the 12 month warranty has just expired.

We've just found out that the mother board is knackered :(

I think recently there was some advice on this forum about 'fit for purpose' and how long this should be. I know that white goods are supposed to work for 2 - 5 years these days.

But what would constitute a reasonable time for a mother board to function, does anyone know?

I'd be really grateful for any advice.

Tx

Considering that standard European guarantees are 3 years, then that could be said to be an average working life of a motherboard. Although of course, M/Bs often go on for year after year, by the same token there will be others that will fail rather quickly. Obviously the fail timer was set rather accurately on your laptop. :)

Even in the UK, if you are within a month or three, I think you have a case for your product not being fit for purpose.

Compaq

Tx for your advice StL

Compaq are nowadays a part of Hewlett Packard, and have always been a reputable company, even if their products weren't always the best ones to buy. I think you might get somewhere with this one.

Purchased from where though..? PC World..? Good luck if so, and hope you get a Store Manager who doesn't just dig his heels in.

He can dig his heels in all it wants. If they don't offer something like a heavily discounted repair or replacement he can go to court, thanks to the sale of goods act.

I know from experience of working at PCW when I was a student that no member of staff knows a thing about it. As long as you've done your homework, know your stautory rights and have patience, you're on to a winner.

Motherboards are fairly easy to change though, try to get a free repair first but if not just order a replacement board and shove it in (well it's a bit more complicated than that but if you can handle,Lego, Meccano or Paint by Numbers you should be able to master it).

My daughter has a Compaq (HP made) and I'm sure it was sold with at least a 24 month guarantee, don't think 12 month guarantees are legal in France though.

Yoyu could always trawl the net though and see if there are any "known defaults" with that type of machine. If that's the case the shop will know about it and repair it for free.

That's true, but store managers have a habit of looking at the 12 month warranty expiry date and thinking that's it, all I have to do is wait this little customer tirade out. And often that attitude works.

I'm guessing it's a Compaq Presario F500 or thereabouts, and the wireless innernet thingy me bob is broken......

If it is, just google Compaq Presario F500 and internet connection, and you will find loads of 'hits'.

Basically compaq/HP have admitted that they're motherboard is crap, and have extended the warranty on it. One phone call is all mine took, the next day a courier arrived to take it away, three days later it was returned all fixed...

Can't be an Asus motherboard then, they don't usually have too many problems with those.

They didn't put a new image on the HDD or anything, did they? My wifi is playing up on my Presario V6133eu and I've seen all the stuff about the extended warranty - I'm just not sure if I should go and get a new HDD first to back everything up before sending it off.

AFAIK All they did was swap the motherboard over :smt102

Just seen your edit!!

All my original files were left in tact, I lost no data whatsoever, even game saves remained in tact!

They must have done something though, because IIRC Windo$e needs re-validating if you swap the motherboard???
