david in sweden Posted 22 June, 2012 Share Posted 22 June, 2012 THANKFULLY ! ....but who can recall Mido, the Egyptian-born striker with the film-star lifestyle? During the reign of Rupert I...he snubbed Saints for a move to Tottenham, where he was not one of their better buys, and having moved on has had a new club almost evert season since....and now has made his latest move....to Barnsley, (well that'll please Michael Parkinson, I suppose) ...which Mido has described as a very important move in his career ..for this read : ( thank goodness I found someone who will still employ me..) I shall keep a careful eye on Barnsley's results next season to see if he can beat Rickie Lambert's record for best-ever Championship goalscorer. The9 Posted 22 June, 2012 Share Posted 22 June, 2012 Andrew Johnson also got 27 in 2003/4 for Palace, though that was in "League Division One" not "The Championship"... clearly many more players have scored more goals than Lambert did last season in the second tier, the "Championship" record means next to nothing as the name of the division is irrelevant to goalscoring feats. The9 Posted 22 June, 2012 Share Posted 22 June, 2012 (edited) I assume he's the Championship top goal scorer, but not the Division One top goal scorer. Division One is even more short termist than "The Championship" as it's already been and gone, 12 years of Div 1, 8 years as "Championship", it's "second tier" if you want a useful comparison. I might have guessed that had I put a comma in the wrong place ... it would have been you who spotted it......The 9 and you're very good at it. My reference to the Championship was based on items I'd read in the media, and heard on a couple of match commentaries, namely... that the highest number of goals previously scored by anyone in the Championship in one season was 25 ... and that Ricky Lambert scored 27 last season. The original item on #1 was about Mido, and I will be interested to see how many goals he will score for Barnsley in the coming season. btw; when did you last start a thread? I don't think I said he was a bad player. He has had a lot of injury problems, and has fallen out with a number of club managers, but that's par for the course with some players - isn't it ? Yes, he does have good goal scoring stats. Hence my point about his potential as a top goalscorer with Barnsley next season. .and yes I'm also disappointed that much of this thread has been highjacked by the name of a division- when it is about a player who ..might...at one time have played for Saints. About a week ago, and I suspect it was rather more Saints-related than the news that a player we played against a couple of times and didn't sign has signed for a team in a league we're not playing in next season. Having long ago come to terms with society's inability to care about this kind of minutae, especially on the internet, my pedantry is now mainly restricted to pulling people up on using the term "Premiership" for the top tier of English football since 2007, and, it appears, debunking garbage stats about being the all time top scorer in a League which has only existed for 8 years. That's not your fault, you were just repeating something invented by the media to hype someone. I look forward to them hyping Ebanks-Blake next season as the leading all time goalscorer in the Coca-Cola Championship, seeing as Rickie achieved his milestone after the sponsors changed. It'll mean just as much. Again, not your fault. I'd have had money on this turning into a thread drift about racism to be honest, it's happened every other time Mido's been mentioned. The9 Posted 22 June, 2012 Share Posted 22 June, 2012 Just checked, I started threads on 18th, 12th and 10th June. One taking the p155 out of Brighton (a cheap shot, a bit small time and probably too concerned about the Championship to be honest), one about the new Premier League ball (no-one cares, and no-one will until we're kicking it), and I've already forgotten what the other one was about. The last one before that was in April. It probably would be a good stat to defend against alpine's comment in the kit thread about "attention-seeking" though. I'm not prolific. As for an opinion on Mido, bit crap, about 10 years past his peak and irrelevant, hence getting signed by Barnsley.
Gorgiesaint Posted 22 June, 2012 Share Posted 22 June, 2012 See Barnsley have also signed Jacob Mellis as well... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18494459 With Mido, Mellis & Kelvin Etuhu, Keith Hill had better make sure he stays on top of them from a disciplinary perspective, can see that lot causing him no end of trouble (of course, they're probably all reformed characters now). JPTCount Posted 22 June, 2012 Share Posted 22 June, 2012 So are you saying Lambert's "record" is phony because other second tier players have already scored more than he did ? It sounds like you're just annoyed at people calling the second tier lots of different names to me. I dont care about a record, he scored alot of goals and we got promoted. wot ppl call it, it's the endless discussion, correction and idea that because it changed name or sponsor it's a new competition that bothers me. on the most part u know what they mean tho, dont you? and fair @ op, I thought he was above average at spurs for an on/off striker, he's no rebrov, or marlet. georgeweahscousin Posted 23 June, 2012 Share Posted 23 June, 2012 Actually we were poised to sign Mido long before he went to Spurs, but he was refused a work permit. The problem with people trying to pass it off as a new competition is precisely that it creates garbage records which mean nothing, which is mildly irritating as it underpins style over substance - and of course it detracts from the actual achievement which is quite impressive in its own right. The other issue that I'm the sort of person who's going to question it, but lots of others take it at face value and would genuinely believe Lambert scored more goals than anyone in a second tier season ever, which is palpably not the case. Badger Posted 23 June, 2012 Share Posted 23 June, 2012 I remember another character we were linked with one summer, some Algerian striker, may have bben playing in France. Not too sure on the name, but something like Aboucherone .The deal did not happen, and again it was speculated that it just ground to a halt when Rupert accepted there would be work permit problems. At least we've never heard of the player again and it has not haunted us. Anyone else note the goalkeeper for Croatia, Pletikosa (sp) ? This was the chap in our sights before we signed Niemi.
