Sat Nav

I am fed up with my (second) Tomtom Live1000. I have yet to find anyone who has one that doesn't constantly malfunction. The main problem seems to be that none of them can be charged up, meaning they switch off whenever you unplug the charger as the batteries are no good. Endless resets and reboots just help you get a little mre irritable before you reach your destination. Shame, as when it works it's an amazing bit of kit.

Anyway, I was wondering what everyone's experiences are. Are Garmin more reliable than Tomtom, or would that just be wasting more money. I want one with the live update connection, I think it might be called "nuvi" on Garmin. Anyone got a reliable one? Or does anyone else just want to ***** about Tomtom?

If you're thinking of buying one, check the tomtom support forum for plenty of reasons to avoid them.

Yes, I have a Tomtom Start as well, what I was wondering about was whether anyone has a Sat Nav with live traffic updates (this one also does weather reports and Google searches and other stuff) that is reliable. I don't use a smart phone and haven't got any plans to get one, my wife has one from her job, but that's no good to me.

If you're handy with tools you could dismantle the SatNav and put an aftermarket battery in, i bought one from the US for about £12 including postage and downloaded instructions from the 'web on how to disassemble, install the battery and then rebuild the SatNav. I've also got a SatNav app for my iPhone which is pretty good and free!

I've got a TomTom.

Led me completely the wrong way once and after I had finally found my way out of the narrow country path that led to someone's house near Hursley, I had an accident. I wrote off my car and lost my licence as I'd only had it for about six months, oh and I also had to part with £85 in fines at a court appearance in Aldershot.

So thank you TomTom for leading me the wrong way, I would never have been on that road to have the accident had I not been led the wrong way in the first place.

I like Sat Navs, although one should be wary.

My mate's "free" sat nav app was employed on the way back from the Derby game.

Brilliant drive, but a bit scary. Instead of routing us A50/M6 back to Liverpool, it instructed us to go through the Peak District on some very bendy roads with a couple of large drops!

Moral of the story. If you mostly know which roads you need and are in an unfamiliar town, just get your Sat Nav to route you to one of those :D

silly question - I've got a Galaxy S2 and it comes with maps and I think navigation. Does nav use data?

No, the maps ate per loaded, so it is great for travelling abroad

Not out of the box; pretty sure that Google Maps still uses data - happy to be corrected though.

If you want to be safe there are plenty of Sat Nav apps you can buy where all the map data is definitely pre-loaded and you can either store it directly on your phone or on the micro sdcard.

And in reply to the OP, my missus inherited her Dad's then top of the range TomTom (last but one generation now I think). It would be a great device but also has a shiiite battery life AND the charging cable keeps falling out of the socket (it's the socket that's knackered as we've tried other cables) to the etxent we have to tape it in whenever we use it.

Conversely, my Dad has a very cheap Garmin model which seems to work brilliantly. I'm also looking at a Garmin Sat Nav for my motorbike as they seem to score better than the TomTom one - very pricey though.

What's wrong with a map, women are scientifically unable to interpret maps correctly due to there lack of spatial awareness.

Er, there are differences but not that extreme, besides we have better verbal skills (ahem.."there"?). When sailing luckily nobody has ever had to rely on my navigation (skipper has always checked), but I started when the only aid we had was a radio beacon DF, then Decca, then GPS. Never absolutely rely on any electronic equipment! It's the same with electronic calculators: you should still have some idea of what order of magnitude the answer should be..

I rely on maps and may print off a street map for my final destination, but often just rely on a look at a map to get rough bearings or some landmark points (right at the Church or pub or whatever). If in doubt I'll ask directions, which some men find strangely difficult..
