Broadband Speed

I was getting 30mb down and 3mb up courtesy of Virgin in Petersfield, but since moving to the frozen wastes I'm now stuck on their National service for non-cabled areas (despite being in the middle of Durham FFS). Supposedly I'm averaging about 4mb down and 1mb upstream but it's up and down like a whore's drawers and doesn't work at all half the time. The irony is in my new street I could have had BT Infinity and 40mb downstream but I'm locked into Virgin's contract and they won't take Infinity wholesale (even though BT have made it available to other suppliers now). To really rub it in, I've just got a letter from Virgin telling me that my old address has now been upgraded to 60mb... ****s... :x

4.09 download, 0.31 upload and a ping of 57.

That's shi t isn't it? That's a BT connection at work and I don't really understand how it works...can I make it faster or do I have to change suppliers?

You can get more out of it by placing your homehub nearer to your phone socket.

You mean just nearer, or with a shorter cable also?

with a shorter cable. thats what the bt engineer did to get me bt vision. he then linked the hub to the vision box with home plugs, and i use wireless fr every thing else.

Best thing to do is plug any router directly in to the master socket. BT master sockets are identified by the lower half being removable, with two small screws, to reveal a few wires to the front plate, and another socket (the test socket) behind the front plate. If possible, connect your router directly to that test socket, using the cable that came with the router, and not any other telephone extension lead.

If you take the face plate off and still have a ring wire (wire 3) connected, then remove that, because it is not used in modern phones and may introduce interference. An i-plate may also help if you have other extension sockets in the house.

Plenty of other tips out there on how to improve your connection, but these are arguably the main ones.
