Is Nigel Adkins up to it ?

I've just watched the interview with Adkins on Saints player, being in footie mode after watching Italy on the box earlier. He was like the cat with the cream, couldn't keep the smile, no.. grin, off his face. Signings are surely definitely well under way: some of them will take longer than others, no doubt.

That's really put me in the mood to go to the pre-season game in France... a couple of hours drive and I'll make a week-end of it. Can't wait now..

Can I just say if we get relegated it wouldn't be a total disaster.

Is Adkins up to what?

If we end up relegated on goal difference, I don't think he's a crap manager. If we end up staying up on goal difference, I don't think this proves his genius.

Anything above 18th would be a fantastic achievement.

We can't expect Saints to keep just rising and rising. I think those who say we could end up 10th or 11th-ish are VERY optimistic.

Sure, it's possible - but that should be the absolute max of our hopes this year (not "probably top 10, maybe Europa League" or whatever)

I know that Nigel doesn't give away too much, but to say we are expecting "one or two more " signings sounds a bit thin to me.

Certainly...at LEAST..one goalie...hopefully two. I don't fancy the thought of Forecast even as number 3.

It seems, he'll likely introduce Shaw and Stephens into the squad - if he doesn't sign another FB.

Although I think that the loan out for Aaron Martin is a good decision, it does means that Seaborne (at present is still in the reckoning?)...but for someone who missed most of last season, and still has most of his experience in L1. that's not good and with Jaidi retired it means TWO new central defenders are needed to keep up the numbers.

Nigel may be in a minority if he's happy with last season's midfield quartet.. but only time will tell.

Likewise, Barnard (like Seaborne) spent most of last season out and can't be seriously rated as a possible Prem. player - can he ?

.......so that means one more striker...now I'm upto FIVE already...

Am I be overly critical, or was it just " one of those NA comments " rolling off the tongue, surely we need more than two new signings - even with JayRod.

Can't resist this, but with the "most of his experience at league 1, and the fact that he was a starting CB in the early championship games until some little ****er kicked his head in, I would say that you must also have doubts about Lambert? no?

well..judging by his recent interview on BBCs site, he's looking for 3 points from every game.

He's got more confidence in the team than many of our fan base.....

I'm glad to hear it. I do hope the players aren't looking at our first four fixtures and thinking where are first points are going to come from. I would hope they are excited and looking forward to the games and looking to proving the doubters wrong. Otherwise why bother even turning up if they are thinking they don't stand a chance? I think Nigel will do fine. He remains positive as he always has and that optimism has spread through the team in the last two seasons. I'm sure it will continue this year, even when we hit a dodgy patch of form it should carry us through.

I expect saints to come between 10-15th. I think we have a pretty decent first team although the depth is lacking which is a worry. The fact is there is very little difference between the bottom 6-7 Premier teams and the top championship clubs, and we kicked the championships ass!!! (Chin Up) You can expect Lambert to score 15-20goals next year with no injury (Based in Holt who he has outscored in every division). Sharp, Jayrod and Lee will get some as well due to our all round attacking being so strong. And we haven't even mentioned Lallana - When Oxlade was here we still said Adam was better - well Oxlade has gone to the Euros and played in the Champions League..... I think Adam can hack the premier to be honest. I also rate Jos and Fonte, the latter less than the former. But I think they are a solid, although not top class pairing that reminds me of Claus and M Svensson.

Needless to say that they were one of the best CB pairings in the league at one time.

People also seem to be forgetting Cork and Morgan who are our stand out CM players. They are good lads who will more than hold their own and who will improve. I mean ffs, look at Charlie Adam and dobbie - if they can step up then so can our current midfield. We also have chappers who is so athletic I can't wait to seem him chase down the pretty boys of the top flight (although slightly less shirt pulling will be in order!) and Hammond is worth a game for the gritty matches - stoke etc. Fox is a sound Left Back with all things considered and we won't be going all-out attack in every game next year so he should have more cover. Frankly, Kelvin is still a sound keeper for 1 maybe 2 years. He won't be the worst in the league, and he won't be the best. And Guly still remains, although whether he will shine or disappear will be one of the exciting questions to be answered - thats right, exiciting! to See how we hack it at this level, not moaning before the season begins!

Maybe I am optimistic to expect us to be better than some of the dross in that league, but if we do bad I won't get on Nigel's back, even if we get relegated I wont! This is a long term project, the guy is new to this level as our some of the players. Maybe his is gifted, something fresh, maybe the whole team are. Alternatively maybe they need time to learn and adapt. I think Nigel has won the right to that time and therefore I think the original post is a bit of a disgrace. I want this club to be the new Arsenal - but will also win things! And I think we can achieve this given time.

We have the money, and we have the atmosphere, confidence, spirit and talent to achieve it. With the youth academy that we have and what is currently in existence/being improved, there are few teams that should feel as optimistic as saints for their future improvement in the league standings. And that is the simple truth. Look at villa - dropped like a rock, Newcastle can't go much higher, Liverpool - where are they now compared to where they used to be. Then look at clubs like Stoke, West Brom and Fulham - we have the potential to eclipse those last 3 teams, and you can be damn sure that that is on Nicola's minimum five year plan!

COYR!!!

Whilst he was (more or less) first choice.....but when we moved upto L1, he played only 4 league and 2 L. Cup games before his "injury/accident /club brawl " call it what you will, and wasn't selected again - or even made the bench during the rest of the season.

If I can recall, his injuries were described as " life-threatening " at one stage, and even though he has happily recovered fitness.....for a player whose main task is to head the ball a lot, I'd be anxious at having to send him for a brain scan after every game, or ..even feeling safe to select him...if I were NA.

I've nothing against this player's (previous) form, but for him and every other squad memeber, the Premier League is new territory and as stated above, he hardly played a handful of Npc games in the last year...let alone dream of the Prem.

I don't know why you suggest there should be any doubts about Lambert?... (I didn't mention him - did I ?).

Since his new training schedule, slim-line figure and dietry changes, he looks twice the player he was in 2009. I expect him to carry on where he left off last seasson, though only NA would expect him to pass 20 Premiership goals again.

" A man has to know his limitations ...Nigel Adkins ...thankfully - doesn't appear to have any."

I agree with every word. After winning the Prem. title... some Man.City players must surely be looking at the newly-promoted clubs as potential "cannon-fodder ", whereas (NA mentions in his BBC interview) ....Saints aren't expected to get a result v. Man.City... so we have absolutely nothing to lose.

We can all look at the form book, but Saints have a habit of upsetting the form book and there's no better place to start.

Im not concerned about the lack of transfer activity at the moment

As every one is on holiday or at the Euro's I dont expect to see much activity tell next month.

Im more than sure we have new players coming in. including a goalkeeper, centre half etc

Just relax fellow posters.

PS I was tempted to take the tasty morsel that was dangled but I have just had a bounty bar !!!!

I'm very concerned about the lack of transfer activity. Once again we are complacent and indecisive. I can see us sending a s season being humiliated if we are not careful !

I'm very concerned that you still consider yourself humourous or credible.
