Man City away first up

Wasn't there a lengthy discussion about whether we'd rather be regularly winning in the Championship or occasionally winning in the Premier League on this forum even before we got promoted. I'm pretty sure there are teams in last season's Prem top half who don't genuinely believe they can compete with Man City in a one-off game.

Absolute nonsense.

Even a struggling QPR with 10 men last season took a lead against Man City into injury time. Blackburn beat Man United last year. Man City lost to clubs including Sunderland, Everton and Swansea.

Any team can beat any other team at some point. An no Premier League team goes into any game resigned to a defeat, genuinely believing they can't compete.

I am actually quite chuffed with our first game.

Go there before they start building up a head of steam and whilst we are still on a high from our promotion.

What a first prem game for the likes of Rickie.

There are usually a couple of shock results on the first day of the season.

Whilst most people will expect us to lose this one, we could be one of those shocks.

I certainly hope Nige and the players will think so!

Also, it is highly likely that this one will be televised - which is great for us ex-pats!!

The fixtures aren't a variable we can control but it is a tough start. The Wigan game already looks key to staying afloat early on but the tough start may have a benefit in preparing us well for the mid and lower table teams to follow.

August

Sat 18 15:00 A Manchester City PREM

Sat 25 15:00 H Wigan Athletic PREM

September

Sat 1 15:00 H Man Utd PREM

Sat 15 15:00 A Arsenal PREM

Sat 22 15:00 H Aston Villa PREM

Sat 29 15:00 A Everton PREM

----------------------------------------

Gulp.......if we could get a couple of home wins out of these fixtures I'd consider it a fantastic return.

Emphasizes even more that we need a top quality GK, KD would\will have a torrid time against that lot.

No big expectations this season, 4th from bottom will be a decent return for me.

So hacked off - as it stands, I will miss out on FOUR of the games at SMS thanks to two weddings and a holiday! For once I sincerely hope Sky do me a massive favour and reschedule at least a couple of those games! Great thing of course is that we will not miss a single game at least in highlights, thanks to television coverage.

Beat Man City? Lol

The pressure will be firmly on Man City though. Their fans will expect 3 points from that game anything less and they will be pi22ed. Of course I expect the quality of their team to be able to handle that pressure of expectation but it gives us something to work with. Saints can play with the pressure off and give it a real go, as our fans, on the whole, will not be expecting anything from the game. So Stranger things have happened. I reckon we could get something. I certainly hope the players haven't looked at that fixture and already marked it down as a defeat.

Wow, at last it is here, however, manager has booked my normal non footballing holiday dates (pompey fan!) so will miss the first three, so leaves me with the first two weeks of the season. Really wanted to go to Man City Husband is a city fan and would have wanted to go, hope sky move this to earlier in the day then can drive back down to get tunnel train in the same day! Not too worried about missing wigan -although they did have a good run in - so suspect this will be tougher than we think. So I only hope that Sky puts back the manu game to the sunday so dont miss this one. The only good thing is that we know we are definately on MOD and more than 2 minutes highlights are guarenteed, plus you can usually get this on TV in Europe.

It's best to start with the tough teams, less pressure for us and a few take a while to gel after all they needlessly buy all the stars of EURO 2012. No matter how you slice it, it will be a tough season. I remember looking at the Champ and League 1 fixtures and thinking, "I can't see us losing", but any team can beat any other team on anay day, it's just that more often than not, the best teams will beat the also rans...

I'd love to know how they are going to allocate away tickets next season. Obviously STH's first, but first two away games being Man City and Arsenal, I can see them easily selling out. Will they look at last season? Free for all for STH's? Or are they going to use this loyalty points thing, but looking at that it doesn't make any sense because it's just a point for every £ spent, so hardly fair to do it that way.

Will almost certainly make the trip up for this, about time I finally managed a Manchester away day. Only fifty-ish quid for an advance rail ticket from Southampton Central, though probably worth waiting for confirmation of fixture disruptions first. Especially necessary for me as I have to miss the first home game due to a wedding (which frustratingly would be more than my life's worth to miss). Can't be waiting until the 3rd weekend of our season to watch a live match! Guess that means my ST will be up for grabs for Wigan at SMS.

I know it's a bit premature but you can get 2 singles to and from London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly for 15 quid with a railcard that weekend.

Looks quite a bit more expensive if it were to be moved to the Sunday though.

As i said, no offence, but you sound like you are more into watching Utd

No probs. Been a STH for 10 years through thin & thinner. What I was inferring is that with the price of the tickets I want to get my moneys worth & not miss any matches. I've a long standing appointment on 31 Aug & 1st Sep, I just knew we'd get a home match for that weekend. The law of sod is certainly true.

Guys get some perspective.... We can decide the title in the first 4 weeks :p

On a serious note, I would rather play city away first game than after we have played 6-7games and we have had a wake up call. Right now we are on the back of back to back promotions, we are not expected to win and this is a cup tie for us.

A few months back someone wrote that they were worried about what might happen when we eventually had to face the " big teams ", I suggested that it wouldn't be a problem if we played Man. city in the first fixture...

I lost my crystal ball so I can't predict the result, except to say that on our FIRST promotion to the top div. August 1966.we played Man.City at home result 1-1 draw., and the return game at Maine Road -as it was then was also a 1-1 draw.

the SECOND time we were promoted we actually did the double over them ...and even finished above them in the table.

NO ! ...I'm not going to talk about history repeating itself, (and they didn't have an oil rich sheik bankrolling them then either), but I do know that the first day games, played on a hot Saturday afternoon in August sometime turn up some weird results. Do I think we'll beat them ? .......stranger things have happened, but a lot will depend on what the line-up is on the day, somehow I have the feeling that a lot may have changed teamwise - before that match day comes along.

Well, if there's a time to play Man City, it's the first game of the season.

Hopefully their pre season will be a bit disjointed with players in The Euros and a busier than normal Hollywood style schedule of meet and greets etc to show off the silver ware and drum up more corporate interest etc ahead of the start of the season .... and playing newly promoted cannon fodder .... think a sneaky tenner on a draw and a another on a win might be in order!! (plus 50p on 4-0 to them!!)

Players all seem well pleased with that game up first. Gives them a real chance to test themselves.

I think back to when we used to play newly promoted/unfancied sides early in the season, we always got made to look stupid.

Sooooooooooooo

That means we should keep them down to single figures then

I'm expecting Nige to send up a reserve team and keep his best players fresh for the more winnable Wigan game.

It will be interesting to see what size crowd that match gets. Traditionally a time for low crowds with people on hols or broke from being on hols!!, not exactly a game to set the pulse racing and Wigan's away support likely to match that of The Blue fews at away games (except SMS) and god forbid a week after a right old welcome back tonking!! Wouldn't be surprised if they doubled the ticket up with priority for Man match.

Was hoping for a home game first as I cant make the 25th but if I could pick a game to miss then Wigan would have been top of my list.

Thank God Man Utd is the following week, the other way around and I would have been very peed off.

Why does the word plastic spring to mind?

I'd rather see the Wigan game.

Very tough start but also glad to be getting the toughest game of the lot out the way first. Whilst I don't believe we have much of a chance, if any of getting a result against City I reckon it could be the best time to play them. They have plenty of players involved at the Euros, whilst we obviously have none so there may be a bit of fatigue and rustyness for them whilst we should be very fresh. We obviously had a very good pre-season last summer in terms of build up and fitness, so same again this summer hopefully and if we can come out of the traps as sharp as we did against Leeds last season then we could at least make a game of it.

I do fancy us to cause a shock in one of the first 3 games against the big sides. October & November looks to be the crucial period in the first half of the season where we will really need to pick up some points.
