Scarface Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 What a legend the man is Was at the rose bowl today for England game with wife a son, spent so much time with saints fans with keen interest. Even though he was with the family, no autograph or photo was too much trouble Really impressive man, with a firm handshake that nearly crippled me! Saint J 77 Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 What a legend the man is Was at the rose bowl today for England game with wife a son, spent so much time with saints fans with keen interest. Even though he was with the family, no autograph or photo was too much trouble Really impressive man, with a firm handshake that nearly crippled me! Friends of mine met him back in April. They went go karting and Nigel and his family were in the same session as them. They said pretty much the same thing. That he was really friendly and offered his Autograph and a photo before they even asked for it. Top man!

Professor Posted 17 June, 2012 Share Posted 17 June, 2012 I have the impression that Nigel Adkins he's a very decent individual who takes his role very seriously, well beyond just the job he's paid to do. But he isn't superman, doesn't walk on water and he is entitled to a private life. The idea that complete strangers go up to him to shake his hand is probably something he has had to get used to but it isn't right. Its one of the curses of celebrity, that like many others in the entertainment business, football managers are treated by some members of the public as if they are personal friends. We are not Nigel’s friends. We are the customers of his employer and when he isn’t working he should be given the space to get on and enjoy himself without interference. I'm sure he takes it as a positive that people think so highly of him to the extent that they stop him in the street to ask for a photograph. He's a Southampton celebrity now, in the public eye, and this is merely part and parcel of his success. I'm afraid you'll have to get used to it. david in sweden Posted 17 June, 2012 Share Posted 17 June, 2012 I think many of you have made some good points. But to be fair to him. He's picked the teams every game and although we didn't win every game, did enough to get promotion. That takes some doing and he deserves some credit for that achievement. The end of season is the only time to evaluate a manager and he's a winner ...whilst some other prominent names are out looking for a new job. The task of a manager is often thankless. Lawrie McMenemy once said: "as a manager, you can never win. If the team wins, people say they played well....if they lose it's my fault because I picked them " .. Nigel has waited a long time for the adulation he deserves. (One or two on this site wanted him replaced a year ago when they thought he wasn't good enough to manage a Championship side...) Now is the time for him to accept that praise. Well done Nigel. However, much as I'd like to shake his hand and offer my congratulations, I do think he deserves some sort of privacy when relaxing with his family. fareham saint phil Posted 17 June, 2012 Share Posted 17 June, 2012 With going to the Rose bowl he would have known that there was a good chance he would have been greeted by a good few Saints fans, yes it would be nice to leave him in peace but if he wanted a peaceful day at the cricket he could go to Lords or another game anywhere in the country. As long as people approach him politely then i wouldnt see him having a problem. Fair play to him for meeting and greeting people and the firm handshake is always a good sign, but he was a physio!!! Saint J 77 Posted 17 June, 2012 Share Posted 17 June, 2012 Seems super arrogant to me!? Well they were pleased he asked, and happy to get a picture with him. No one who was there thought he was being arrogant. Adkins is obviously just good at reading the situation and knew they were going to ask, because they were. I'm sure if he didn't like it, he wouldn't go to events like this - his role for SFC is as much about PR as it is running the team and he seems to embrace it. You seem to have put quite a po-faced spin on what was meant to be an upbeat post.
