Surely you arent so thick you arent able to follow a thread on a football forum DD? Its about whether or not our future Head of State should wear a uniform he hasnt earned. I then said the UKs contemporaries such as the Germany, France and America dont. Ring any bells now?

So you cleverly rebutting that view by showing pictures of the Heads of State of different countries or of Princes who arent head of state, is a bit irrelvant.Comprendez?

but all these banana republics in Europe are dishing out honorary ranks to their royals....some of which are heads of state

The acid test is whether the Armed Forces are offended by members of the Royal Family donning the uniforms of their service without actually earning it through military service. Whilst there may be some who object my experience of 40 years working in and with the armed forces is that they welcome the Royal Family in all its guises and do not object to them donning of military uniforms.

Its not just the atmed forces though, its the rest of the population they purport to represent. I dont feel that strongly because it isnt a big deal, but I do find it cringe making.

If a member of the royal family is the head of a particular arm of the miltary, whether as an honorary title or not, I can't see why so many people are getting their knickers into such a twist about the idea of them actually wearing the uniform. Especially when those in the military (i.e. those who it should in theory be offended the most) are actually very supportive of it. Weird. It seems like some people just like to try and act offended on behalf of others.

This was something I asked at the jubilee celebrations, I wondered what the Chelsea Pensioners, who were proudly wearing their medals, actually thought about being presented to the Royal family, who had a lot more bling than they did. As a civilian, who knows his place amid all this military testosterone, and clearly has no real right to comment, I think I would feel a little cheated. However, as Moonraker said, the acid test, is whether the members of the military would feel devalued in any way, Clearly the answer is they do not.

Now can anyone answer me this, why was Prince Andrew not wearing any uniform, and a far as I could see, no medals, at the Trooping of the Colour? After all, he has earned the right to do so.

Does Andy hold a banana title in the Army ?

Trooping the Colour is just an Army do, isnt it ?

Alps yes the trooping of the colour is a foot guards parade hence reason not wearing uniform .Andrew lays a wreath at the cenotaph wearing his naval uniform. He has the rank of commander and is also an honorary vice admiral . Anne also wears a naval uniform. I met the duke of Westminster a few weeks back he is an maj gen and wore his afghan combats and dessie boots

Couple of points, trooping the colour is a Household Division event so includes the Blues and Royals (Donkey Wallopers) not just foot guards. The Duke of Westminster is the senior Territorial Army officer, nothing honoury about his rank he is a serving long standing member of the TA.

I thought Andy was an honourary rear-admiral (one step lower), not vice-admiral.

Ah ok, Thanks for that. I didn't realise he would be excluded from wearing a naval uniform at an army shin-dig.

Alps, it was a simple question, it didn't need the aggressive posturing for an answer, but thanks for taking the time.

I wasnt aware my answer was agressive, sorry you feel that. Perhaps it was short and to the point, but I was busy.

If you have taken exception to my "banana" metaphor, it was simply chosen to reflect my opinion of the values behind such titles.

Ok, furry-muff . It wasn't the banana metaphor, I happen to find in appropriate, I just found it a bit terse, could just be the nature of the written, rather than spoken, word.
