david in sweden Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Noticed that the Daily Star is running a story that Palace will bid / have bid 800K for Lee Barnard... Pity I liked LB (when in good form) but going from L1 to Premier League after a missing season would make it hard for him to make the 25 squad. IF true, may be a good solution for all parties concerned.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Last season was a injury hit disappointment, but in the main he did well here and obviously this player still has a lot to offer. However you'd struggle to make a convincing case that he's Premier League quality, and in any case he's well down the pecking order here now. So this transfer (or one like it) would seem like a good deal for both club and player.
Ewell Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 A league 1 striker at best, so genuinely stunned Palace are courting him which just shows their ambition for next season.
MadDogMatt Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 He is a top striker for league 1 and a good striker for the Champioship IMO. Put in some very good shifts for Saints but as said is down the pecking order now. Price seems high and Palace don't have that kind of money to spend without selling one of their prize assets eg Clyne or Zaha. If we are interested I am sure we would conclude the deal at the same time but then again i thought that with Arron, unless any deal is already done. Steeleye Saint Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 He didn't get a chance to show what he could do in the Championship, but had he been fit when we were a little short in the striking dept may well have shown his worth and earned us some extra points. Don't think he'd make the grade in the Prem though so a move to Palace would be a good one for him. Good luck to him.

My thoughts exactly. He's unlikely to get a look in at Saints and could end up a lot worse places than Palace, £800k would be a decent amount for him everything considered - This is from the Daily Star though............. Doctoroncall Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Will be surprised if he goes for that much considering he is 5th choice striker and didn't he sign an improved contract at the beginning of last season? Certainly would be good for him if he wants regular first team football rather than sitting in the reserves.
pingwing Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Got worried for a second Tadanari Lee was back to Japan, but thankfully what we all knew was coming is finally happening. Good luck to him if Palace is his destination, they could do with a hard working and determined chap upfront to compliment Scannell (especially if the pace of Zaha leaves the club). We let Connelly go, who gave much more in his limited appearances last season, so it's hardly a surprise that we can't have him kicking about the place being a reserves choice behind Lambert, Lee, Jay and Sharp. shurlock Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 (edited) Obviously was not a 100% match fit but looked way off the pace whenever he featured last season. £800k is a great price (for us) for a 28 year old with unproven championship ability -and there are plenty of people with more promising records who've failed to cut it in the championship. I'd happily take £400-500k for the player. Edited 16 June, 2012 by shurlock

SNSUN Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Eeek I thought this was a thread about Tadanari for a second! Sadly there are always going to be casualties when a team gets promoted twice in two years. League One players are no longer good enough for the higher leagues. Barnard is a good striker, not amazing, but he knows where the goal is. I liked his work rate (a trait I liked in Harding too) but I always though he was a red card waiting to happen. With his injury worries and court case behind him, he'll do a club proud next season in the lower leagues, if that's Palace then good luck to them. Badger Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Barnard plus money for Nathan Clyne ? This *Nathaniel Except that Clyne, as I understand it, is out of contract so Palace can not negotiate on wher he goes. There might be some 'compensation' due to Clyne's age so that may be a slight opportunity for us, but again, don't think we can enter into negotiations with payers going there until Clyne has signed. ART Posted 16 June, 2012 Share Posted 16 June, 2012 Shame on you David!. Since when does the Daily Star become a reliable source of information about players? I hate to see a decent guy like Lee get hacked to pieces and transferred out based on a crap bit of poor sports journalism. Don't any of you guys give a thought on what a player must think when trying to motivate himself for the time of his life, when he reads all the deckchair comments posted and based on absolutely nothing. Obviously you weren't around when we were in the Premiership and injury robbed us of many players in the huge squad we had. I'm sure you mean Billy Sharp - don't you? but we will buy another striker (if /when Lee Barnard moves)...Five strikers may not be enough. Redknapp (when at Spurs) bemoaned his injured-striker list last season when he had 5 top strikers, but found it hard to find two who were fit AND on form. I agree with bringing on Academy prospects, but the last time I looked there was no outstanding goalscorer in the youth ranks. A young striker wanting to get into the first team (especially in a Prem.side) will have needed to have scored 40 to 50+ goals in his Academy career, and although I agree there are some good prospects ...none of them has performed that well - even at youth level. David of the Daily Star might be a good handle to replace Sweden seeing we're back in the Premier League [/quote Well the article was there for everyone to see ART, and although I deplore the tabloid journalism style-it surely has some source (even if it's a dubious one). There are worse contributions than this based only on twitter-gossip and the like in the HCDAJFU thread. As I wrote earlier, Lee has had a run of bad luck in the last year or so, though few can deny his valuable contribution in our L1 promotion, but he played very little football last season and a step up to the Prem. seems a bit too much. A transfer, or even a "loan-out" maybe more appropriate to help him find his form again, and to my mind at least - this seems a viable alternative. Only time well tell where he'll be playing next season, but I know that historically-speaking ... few London-born players seem to find playing a satisfying career playing on the South coast, and rarely stay that long. He certainly wants to play again, but I don't see him as a Premier League regular - do you ? Edited 17 June, 2012 by david in sweden
dubai_phil Posted 17 June, 2012 Share Posted 17 June, 2012 We have a 5th striker. Guly. Well for many he'd be 5th choice rather than 1st anywhere in the team. Barnard is a good hard working goal scoring striker, who will do a great job for any team. IMHO in the PL however his first touch is not good enough to make up for a lack of "genuine" pace (unlike Lambert). Lee did a great job for us, but we will need better next season. Good luck to him IF he moves and any team that gets him will be happy with him provided he can stay fit
shurlock Posted 17 June, 2012 Share Posted 17 June, 2012 (edited) Yet again I am so glad that fans on this forum don't negotiate our transfer fees! How much is he worth? Of course, I'd try to convince a bulb like you he was worth £30m, doesn't mean I mean I'm going to get it (in your case it might be a bit different). Serious point is would you keep a player who you have to pay premier league wages but has virtually zero chance of featuring? And what is the minimum price you would put on someone like that -it's called a reservation price in business- obviously hoping to get more? Would I sniff at 500k? Definitely not (it's more than we reportedly got him for) and I don't think most sensible people would either.
