Liebherr Banner / Switzerland v Mexico

A couple of questions: whatever happened to the Marcus Liebherr banner is it sitting gathering dust in a garage somewhere?

And how many other Saints fans are going to the GB v Uruguay match on August 1st in Cardiff? The event also includes Switzerland v Mexico - an opportunity to unveil the banner, maybe?

The Liebherr banner is now in the hands of the club and they make the calls as to when it's displayed, as far as I know.

Would expect it to be out on show in the pre-season games.

I'd expect it never to be shown again, but there we go.

I really feel for all those who donated money but particularly the guy who organised it with good intentions. The club did over the fans and particularly the contributors of this forum and I think the club should reimberse the money spent. People donated for the flag to be used and not sat in a dusty store cupboard. Whilst I am sure we all respect the families wishes, their father would not have wanted the supporters treated this way, it was not what he stood for.

Why was it handed over to the club anyway ?

IMO, it wont be seen again. We can speculate as to the reasons for this.......

No need for speculation (yes, i know....an alien concept on the Saints Web Forum....) as the family have already explained why they feel uncomfortable seeing it (IIRC)

.

Have they ?

I dont recall an offical statement from the club about this. If there had been, I am sure the fans would have understood.

My memory's not too hot but I recall there being some kind of explanation from the family via the club. Possibly in a letter to Mike who organised the flag which he relayed on here.

I don't recall that. I thought it was Health and Safety issue with the liability if it caused an accident, hence coming out and covering empty seats.

For what ever reason the flag caused distress with the Liebherr family in attendance, I don't know if that will fade with time but it seems crass to display it given the emotions it causes within the family.

To be fair he's making a valid point.

I'm not sure he is, tbh.

If the Liebherr family dont want to see it when they come to SMS, it can stay locked up on those days. If the Liebherr family dont want a permanent memorial to Markus at the ground, that I can accept.

But why should a fan funded temporary memorial, which helps the fans identify with the club, stay permanently locked away ?

The club could have made a gesture, like agreeing to buy at cost it from the fans who donated, and giving the proceeds to charity.

Did the communication from the club explicitly say it would never be aired in public again ?

guess, because they own the club and don't want it shown.........

my question is...IF this is the case, was the club/owners consulted before this (very well intended) venture was started?

not having a go as I contributed and glad I did...just a simple question

Well, it seems abundantly clear that they were not consulted at all, otherwise the club would not have displayed it in the friendly game that they did.

Which also suggests that their reaction to it caught NC by surprise too....

Kiss my *rse. I am expressing my opinion, and I dont agree it was necessarily a good point.

If NC had felt it could cause an upset and there had been a need to consult the family, it would never have been displayed at all.

It's even possible the family were aware prior to the flag being displayed. Just on the day the effect it had over whelmed certain members of the family that Cortese thought it best to keep under wraps for the near future.

The flag was done for all the best intentions, just that the effect was too much when the family were still grieving. This may just come down to the massive size of the flag but I would imagine the flag will become acceptable given time. A sorry conclusion to a good intention, no need to point fingers at what was done in good faith.

IIRC Mike produced the flag with the blessings of both the club and Nicola Cortese and they gave a substantial sum to help the fund raising. However when it was unfurled for the Liebherr cup, which was attended by the family, it caused them distress (maybe it was too soon) and they requested that it was not used. Whether enough time has passed to change their mind, who knows?

Thanks for all of the comments. I would think that we could forgive the club and family that get us back to the premiership for a minor misunderstanding. I haven't got my tickets yet so don't know where I will be in the stadium but will be wearing my saints shirt. Come on you Swiss Reds!

who are they?

2 blokes who returned their season tickets, minutes after buying them, because they found out they had to pay to park. Then they went to the echo to blab and try to sound like superfans, when in all honesty they look like complete and utter pillocks.

I thought it was that the Liebherr family didn't want to see a picture of Markus every week and be reminded of their loss.

Pretty sure " the Liebherr family " don't attend every game and presume those closest to him would have his photo's around the house anyway.

Whatever the reasons I think we should put the whole episode down to exprience and move on.
