Nathan Redmond?

Teenager Nathan Redmond made his first team bow in August 2010 when he was introduced as second half substitute in Blues' 3-2 Carling Cup victory over Rochdale in August 2010.

Southampton are currently looking at the Birmingham City superstar Nathan Redmond, with a look at signing the youngster on a 4 year deal believed to be around £5 million pounds.

A source at St Andrews revealed that Southampton have held secret talks with Redmond who is keen to move south to be closer to his granny at New Milton.

At 16 years 173 days he became the second youngest Blues debutant behind club legend Trevor Francis.

Kitts Green-raised Redmond joined Blues as an eight-year-old, having been spotted playing for local side Hardy Spicer.

The winger started playing in Blues' under-18 side aged 14 before making his reserve team debut a year later.

Comfortable on the ball, Redmond has an abundance of pace and skill that can take him past defenders. He also has an eye for goal and is a regular scorer cutting in from the flanks.

He has represented England at up to under-19 levels.

Redmond was given a three year professional contract by the club in March 2011.

It was during the 2011/12 campaign that he became a first team regular. He finished the season with seven goals from his 37 appearances and won the club's Young Player of the Season Award for his efforts.

anyway...good prospect, can't see it being 5m up front if true....wouldnt grumble if we signed him.

Seems we are looking to do what Spurs did a few years back and buy a bulk of young English talent...Huddlestone et al.

£5 million? Yikes.

I'll match your 'Yikes' and raise you a 'Bloody Hell'.

Paying this kind of money for another teams teenage prospect - who is not even called Theo or Alex is insane. Unless he's brilliant of course, in which case I reserve the right to claim that I always said it was a sound investment.

If we're going to spend £5million on him I'd far rather we put that money towards the likes of Jarvis. If people say JayRod isn't ready for thr Premier League, then people should have massive reservations on when Redmond is ready. He needs another year in the Championship. I don't believe this rumour at all.

I think you have to view £5m a bit differently when there's a good chance the player will go on to be worth far more. Always a risk, but often clubs spend this on older players whose value is only going down. Let's be honest, a few months of decent top flight performance and a player like that will double in value.

Indeed, but if we had a choice I'd go for Thomas Ince, who I think will be worth more - and sooner.

We'd probably have to fight off some of the big boys and spend even more to get him, but Puncheon could still turn out to be a bargaining chip.

A "4 year deal believed to be around £5 million pounds" can mean a lot of things though - for example a transfer fee of £1m, another £1m after 100 Saints appearances, £2m for playing for England plus £4,000pw wages for four years.

Calm down, calm down. This is a Dog thread, remember.

I used to live in New Milton and queue up at the paper shop by the station for the pink Echo on a Saturday night to get the first write-up of the day's Saints' game. I wonder if Nathan's granny was there then! He sounds good but is he better than Ward-Prowse?

Redmond is a very good prospect and if we don't grab him now he might go beyond our reach. However, he's got a lot to learn and at times was poor away from home. Towards the latter part of the season he did find his feet playing in a more flexible role behind the striker. He is a winger though and we need competition to Lallana and he might fit the bill there. The £5m priced tag is a bit scary. I don't see a player as good as Chamberlain. I've being saying it for yoks that Mutch and Davies should be on our list with Redmond perhaps not far behind. Brum are skint, but I just wonder how long before they get desperate.

Brum won't be skint after we've signed those 3 :)

don't be too sure. They have a £50k a week man on their books draining them. They are in massive trouble financially. I imagine the club know this and we haven't been backwards in the past to `help' sides in need out by taking their talent off their hands so the likes of Davies, Redmond, Foster, Butland and Mutch will be on our radar.

indeed. Have notice not too many Arsenal fans slagging Wenger for AOC move now - at the time they were in uproar saying along lines of 'not another young propsect ffs when we going to make a proper signing.' Tis always gamble but £5m is not much nowadays unless complete dud. Liverpool spend four times that on known duds!

Not that I believe the rumour for a minute btw and had heard his gran wanted to move back to teh black country
