Some interesting transfer news - West Ham have failed in a £4m bid for Jarvis:

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11688/7811019/Wolves-reject-Jarvis-bid

Which I personally think is a laughable amount, I would think it would be nearer £6m - £7m for him! Although there fans seem to think they should be getting £10m. Consequently the west ham fans reckon that Vaz Te, noble, et all are worth £15-20million ^_^ - please explain why the gods allowed them to get promotion?!?!?!?! most annoying bunch of twazzocks I can think off now that Pompey are gone.

Also in the news, apparently andrew johnson is going to QPR. With him and green I think they are going to be tough nut to crack next year, can see them doing rather well and top 10finish under hughes.

no different to the nutters on here who think we are on an unstoppable march to champions league football and that we are bigger than everton

as for QPR, I agree...seems to be in fashion to claim they are turd...despite them being better in the 2nd half of the season than both the brilliant norwich and swansea.

hughes is not a poor manager and he will get it right there and they will be ok.....

It was only a few weeks ago people were saying Davis, lambert and Lallana should all be in the England squad and were going on about us being in the champions league. People were saying we needed a 45k stadium and were the most attractive team in the country outside of the top 4 clubs to a player when we were in LEAGUE ONE!!! and anyone who disagreed had no ambition and were stuck in Dell sized mentalities. If a fan of another club looked at some of the stuff on here they'd think we were massively arrogant and deluded as well.

Player X is worth £Y so Player Y must be worth £X.

When have these comparisons ever been helpful or true?

They come from thick people who have no concept of contracts, wages, competition from other clubs, relsale value etc.

so this has turned up as a "rumour " again.

Now it's supposed to be us and Stoke and /or Sunderland ....the only thing I 'm wondering about is that at £6 million asking price, and he's already 26 .

A winger's greatest asset is supposed to be his speed.....if he loses a yard...then he won't be as effective as he was 3 years ago.

Not particularly commenting on the player as I haven't seen him play much.

Pretty sure a wideman doesn't definitely need lightning pace. Whats the point in a rapid winger if they cant cross? Jarvis is very decent, still relatively young and can put in a good delivery, also scores the odd goal, would be a great signing for the right price.

I don't think I said he needed lightning pace..but the best wingers can move up a gear when it's needed. Theo Walcott has that ability.

Oldies like me recall John Sydenham (former So'ton Schools sprint champion) in the 1960's who could skin most full backs he went up against, but in later years he lost that turn of pace and began to look a bit mediocre.

One of my favourites - Marian Pahars - had an amazing turn of pace - when he was 22, but after his ankle injury was never a shade of his former self.

Likewise, Strachan lashed out money on 30 y.o. Neil McCann - was it ?) whose injury record and lack of pace made him WGS' worst buy.

I'm sure Matt Jarvis has been good so far ...and if we can be confident that he's injury free and still got some pace then he sounds like a good buy.

For my part... I'd consider very carefully before buying a winger over 25 .....or a goalie under 30... especially for the many millions being quoted as a potential fee..

I'm actually sure that Neil McCann wasn't as bad as we thought, he cant have been...however, we didnt pay an awful lot of money for him so didn't matter too much. Pahars was a forward. Walcott would be world class if he could deliver a decent cross everytime, but a lot of quick wingers cant. From all my time watching Southampton (since about 95) we've never really had any real pace in our side, Pahars is probably the only one.

Pace is desirable but not essential. Stating the bleedin' obvious but what's essential in a winger is ability to cross the ball. Even better if he can do so with left and right but that would be a rare winger. Amazingly, professional players that can even pass with both left and right remain a rare breed. Btw my recollection of McCann was that he was that bad. Rangers done us up there whatever he cost.

i thionk Rodney Wallace was the last really decent winger with pace and skill we had. MLT and him had a wonderful understanding and I recall against QPR away and I think Liverpool at the Dell they scored a few by their play together. i was always upset that they were split so early in their careers

Beckham never needed pace.[/QUOTE]

...nor did he have a lot - as memory serves, but he had that special ability for dead ball situations for which he became world famous (and one of the few footballers to have his name in a film title !)..and Man Utd and England were glad of that on many occasions.

It matters little what " shirt number " they pull on (OK - we don't have numbered positions anymore - but you know what is meant).

Wayne Bridge's overlapping runs from left back brought a lot of attention, but didn't he first play left wing as a boy?

Likewise Gareth Bale's dynamite free kicks masked the fact that he wasn't a world class defender at left back, but Redknapp brought out the best in him when he played more of a midfield role and could start his runs further up the field.

The "almost outdated" view of a winger as a fast-running player able to beat a full-back and centre a good ball from the byline was rarely seen - even in the days when wingers, rather than midfielders were the creative players.

The rare exceptions were usually those who managed to play that role for their country in past decades . Now tactics are different and it is no surprise to see players like Richardson, Butterfield and Fox getting lots of assists for just that ability to centre /cross a ball that only wingers "mythically" possessed.

I'm actually sure he was as bad as we thought. Total load of rubbish, no pace, no threat, no idea. Think John Barnes at his absolute worst for England. £1.75m was a tidy sum for us, not to mention his wages. McCant was the perfect knickname. Thank god we didn't have to suffer him for years.

If only we could have Rod Wallace back in his prime, what a player he was! He'd probably end up at Arsenal if we did have a young version of him today though.

You've clearly quickly forgotten Neal Heaney, Stuart Ripley, Frankie Bennett and Neil McCann then.

Oh, hang on, I think that might not be correct.....

Actually thought Heaney was half decent. Supplied a lot of assists for Shipps and Flash as well as chipping in with the odd goal himself.
