Should England bid for Euro 2020?

Probably not worth it. Platini hates us & all things British (did you see his face when Chelsea won the CL final), so we've got no chance. Despite having the stadia & infrastructure already in place & a proven track record organising major tournaments (Euro 96, commonwealth games & hopefully the Olympics wont embarrass us) we won't get a look in.

No, f**k UEFA.

There is a history of these tournaments being white elephants long term (those stadia in Portugal for example) and they have shown a preferance to favour new markets rather then then established nations, even prefering them above all sense and reason.

When the time calls for stability (like it seems it will in 8 years.....) they can't just turn back to the countries that could host a tournament like this tomorrow who they've previously insulted. We need to show some self respect and leave them to it.

Colin.

How could hosting a major football contest in England end up being a white elephant

I should have clarified the point.

For us of course it wouldn't!! UEFA/FIFA however wanted to push these events in countires that couldn't afford to do so long term. They can't just come running back once they have exhausted all the daft smaller countries who gave it a go and are now feeling the burden.

Why don't the Scandinavian countries bid for 2020? If I am correct Norway are loaded and the roads are decent up there (as are the woman)

They are loaded because they are not stupid, they know they have no requirement for 8 x 35,000 capacity stadia. Therefore they will not bid.

Dare I suggest that even a joint bid wouldn't be deemed practical.

Spain please. It's a decent jolly.

Lots of decent options - Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland. You know UEFA - those countries who have the stadiums, infrastructure, decent hotels, transport links and are places people actually want to visit.

Maybe a triple bid, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Denmark and Sweden both to have 3 35K stadiums and Norway to have 2.

Could be a fair shout. The fuss over a joint 'Celtic Nations' bid of Northern/Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales saw that disregarded though. I doubt a joint scandinavian bid would be too warmly felt either.... (Although they are not tared with English association.... may have a chance.)

I'd suggest we should go for it. Platini may not be a fan of England, but he's a fan of money and an English tournament would be one of the highest possible in terms of ticket revenues. And as stated, we already have the stadia to fit the requirements. Add in the lure of a major tournament and it encourages clubs to upgrade or modernise further, which I only see as a good thing.

Wembley, Old Trafford, Emirates, St. James Park, Stadium of Light are already very good and fit the bill. Newcastle still haven't ruled out extending St. James even further which would give them a 60K+ capacity. City of Manchester stadium is decent but I think regulations would restrict the bid to one stadium per city (apart from one which can have two).

Liverpool (and Everton before hitting the skids financially) have been promising investment for a new 55K - 60K stadium, so that would add one more to.

The 50K Cortesedome would also potentially get a look in (in all seriousness I'd hope St. Mary's could be 40K by then so its a real possibility). Then you're left with a choice of Villa Park, Elland Road, or MK Dons and Molineux if their further design plans go through.

Its a decent bid, and I certainly wouldn't mind football coming home once more.
