What a terrible Saints specific thread. It's a shame that people feel the need to start threads which share ideas on the first 11, especially when you put forward a team which not everyone agree's on.

I say we just focus on what underpants everyone is wearing for the next season, specific attention should be on the brand, fit, fabric quality and exclusivity. That's what real men discuss on football forums.

I doubt we have paid £6m to £7m on him to play him out of position.

Kind of highlights the pointlessness of this discussion. With only 1 signing, it's basically just the same team as last year, but some people have wedged Rod into RM because there is nobody else. I think he will start up front with Lambert with Sharp dropping to the bench.

Exactly. There is no way Rodriguez will play right midfield. We haven't just paid £6.5m for a top young striker to play him out of position.

This!!

-------------New--------------

-----New, New, Hooiveld, Fox----

----Cork, Schneiderlin, Lallana----

-------------Lambert-------------

--------Rodriguez, Sharp--------

Bench: Davis,Fonte,New right winger,Lee,New Striker.

Putting aside New, New and New .... I actually agree that this shape should be our first option, and like you, I go with Lambert playing behind a front two. Good work, sir.

That looks far too narrow for my liking and I think we'll get battered defensively. Lallana isn't one for tracking back, it'd be like having 4 strikers on the pitch a lot of the time.

A front 6 of something like this would be more likely. Gives us a bit more width and we like to play with the 2 sitting central midfielders. We need someone better than De Ridder starting on the right though. Not Guly.

- - - - Cork - - - Morgan - - - -

De Ridder - Lambert - Lallana

- - - - - - Rodriguez - - - - - -

I'm glad to see most are adoptng my favourite formation of 4-2-3-1. Agree in the main with lighthouse, thomas Ince would be perfect in the role you've got De Ridder in. As would Jarvis.

I we were playing tomorrow.

KD

FR JF JH DF

JC MS

GDe RL AL

JR

That'll do (depending who we are playing), probably good enough to stay up.

If we are playing hard ball we can do better at GK, RB, CB, LB, holding Mid, RM.

What wedge have we got left? Interesting times.......

NA always talks about the squad so I think the concerns that people have over record signings being on the bench are not valid for him. He'll be thinking about the 18 man squad for day one. I'm pretty sure that we'll go 4-4-2 with two holding central midfielders. So for the first match of the season I'd say that we'll see 3 or 4 new players in the 18 man squad along with the core of last season subject to fitness and by the end of August there will be a couple more new faces added.

I'm going for something like the following:

Davis

Richardson New CB Hooiveld Fox

New RM Schneiderlin Cork Lallana

Lambert Rodriguez

Bench

New keeper

Fonte

Hammond

Guly

Sharp

Lee

New midfielder

Resepct the view but he played there for quite a while with Burnley didn't he... .....read what the Burnley fans say about him. Not good with his back to goal. Will go deep to collect the ball. likes to run the channels.....

Someone else suggested a similar role for Lee and I harshly dimissed it. Truth is, when you play with wing backs, we don't actually use wingers in the traditional sense.

Anyway we'll see pre season. Personally I don't see the point in playing £6.5m for someone whose play is so limited we can only put him in one position.

I thought that was more wide right in a front 3?

Fox to get absolutely torn apart in the first two games due to his awful defending, followed by a mass panic to bring in a new LB

I'm not enamoured with either of our full backs in the Premier League, especially if our chairman's wont is to push on beyond survival and try and reach a top half finish or better, but both Richardson and Fox are OK if we don't sign anyone else for their positions. Stephen Crainey played in the Premiership, and yes Blackpool got relegated, but it shows it can be done. Is Fox better than Benali for instance? I know football has progressed since those days, but I'd say our current full backs CDAJFU. By all means sign better full backs though!

^^Like^^

Bench - New GK, Fox, Fonte, Cork, Guly, Sharp, Lee.

That'd do ok in the prem. Think Clyne and Zaha are unlikely though.

Think we'll get Buttner and Davies and I would love zaha to come in too.

Apart from aerial ability, Clyne is rock solid at right back, would be happy to get him but if we don't, think we'll scour Europe for an equally good right back with Fraser remaining as a quality deputy.

IMO most likely starting team as of now is this:

---------------------KD---------------------

Clyne----------Fonte-------Jos------------Fox

--------------------Morgan------------------

---------------JWP----------Lallana----------

Guly-------------------------------------J Rod

--------------------Lambert-----------------

Cork and Davis won't be fully fit, and any new signigns now won't have long at all to get up to speed. Can't see anyone outside of this who is really making a push.

After playing in CM so far in pre season, why would we then put JWP out on the right wing ?!

Sharp's a bit unlucky if he misses out, which I spose he probably will if we're sticking with the old 4-3-3 like you've got there

This team! That middle 3 is jizzworthy.

-----------------DAVIS------------

CLYNE-----FONTE-----JOS-----FOX

----------------MORGAN-----------

---------DAVIS----------CORK-----

J-ROD------------SRL------LALLANA

Subs: Gazzaniga, Richardson, Seaborne, Ward-Prowse, Chaplow, Guly, Sharp

I think Lallana was wasted in the middle of the pitch against Ajax, he needs to be playing further up the pitch where he's going to be able to get more space to drift and roam. JWP has been very impressive so far this pre-season but I think it may be a bridge too far to put him in as a 17 year old in a newly promoted team playing their first game of the season against the current Champions. Hopefully Cork and Davis will both be match fit given their lack of a decent pre-season at this point. Likewise Guly has been very good so far this pre-season but I think Jay Rod carries more of a goal threat (evident even from watching him only twice) and could allow us to switch to a 4-4-2 with 2 good physical strikers on the pitch if need be.
