trousers Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 (edited) I sincerely hope that isn't the team that starts next season It wouldn't surprise me if Adkins fields a starting line up on day 1 that closely resembles our Championship line-up. IIRC, our starting line-up at the beginning of last season was c.90% of the team that competed in League One. I think he'll want to show people that the club were building the core of a team that could compete in the premier league 2 - 3 years ago. I would therefore expect Sharp to start with Rodriguez on the bench (for example). I'll probably be labelled a buffoon by the forum thought police for having the temerity to suggest such a foolhardy hypothesis but we'll see.... We didn't sign Hooliveld and Fox until the end of August. The only new signing we'd made by then were Cork, who played and De Ridder, who was on the bench. When Hoolivleld and Fox joined they both quickly became first choice in their positions. By the time we played Forest at the beginning of September all 3 were starting. It wasnt because that's what Adkins chose to do, it was because we hadn't yet made all our signings.

Frank's cousin Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 I think Lee will be a crucial part next season. Cant see us playing 4231 (although it works nicely for the Germans), but that formation makes us a little narrow IMHO. Can see JRod possibly polaying wide opposite Lee with Adam getting a freer role through the middle: Davis New RB/Jos/New CB/Fox Schneiderlin/Cork (ideally new Midfield General Schweinsteiger would do:lol:) JRod Adam Lee Lambert

Davis Richardson/New RB Fonte Hooiveld Fox Cork Schneiderlin JRod Guly Lallana Lambert You could guarantee this team would do very well, winning a high proprtion of its matches, --------- as long as it was playing in League1. Come to think of it, it almost is the L1 team. Such a small change from last season isn't really the evolution that Adkins has talked about, but it could be 8/11 correct. If so, should that make us feel more or less confident for results in August/Sept?

Saint Charlie Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 (edited) So more people have Rodriguez playing in a midfield role than up front? Quite odd. He is a striker. He plays on the shoulder of the defender and is a no 9. Not really worth having a thread like this until August when you see more of the signings. SNSUN Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 I too think JayRod will start on the bench, but realistically I think we'll see at least a couple more signings coming in before August and so it's nigh on impossible to predict. Harsh though I may be, but only Lallana and Lambert have cemented places in our team, but you'd think that Davis, Morgan and Jos and perhaps Fox, Frazer and Cork would start. Up top is interesting. Assuming Lee is back and fully fit, it could be either of the three strikers playing alongside Lambert.
The9 Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 (edited) The team will depend on the opposition. As far as ridiculous speculation goes, here's my team, with appropriate gaps. GK RB Hooiveld CB Fox RM Cork CM Lallana Lambert Sharp Davis, Rodriguez, Fonte, Richardson, Schneiderlin, Lee, Guly on the bench. Cork or Schneiderlin pretty much even tbh. I'd put Lambert on the bench but certain people would throw a massive hissy fit and say I had it in for him, plus I genuinely think Adkins wants to show that our "4" strikers will be interchangeable and all of last season's regular starters will feature (except Hammond, who will be Jaidi/Barnard 2013). Then again we might have signed another club record striker by then and it could be him and Rodriguez. Realistically despite my 5 gaps I can't see us signing more than 4 more starters by August (but I suppose we HAVE to sign at least one keeper and what's the point of him being worse than the one we have ?). We might add a couple more in September if things start badly. Edited 13 June, 2012 by The9

Most people on here seem to think every available goalkeeper who would sign for Saints is not better than Davis and people onthis forum are obsessed with signing back up players. So based on that most people on this forum will expect us just to sign back up players for what we already have.

The9 Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 Schneiderlin is our best central midfielder, I am sure of that! When has Adkins said that about Guly? I only put Cork in because he was signed more recently, and therefore you'd assume as part of the plan to play in the Prem (though the same goes for Lee, Sharp and Fox - not so convinced by Hooiveld's role as he was clearly not first choice at the time). I personally think we need two new CMs, with possible Guthrie only being a borderline starter slightly ahead of Cork. Trying not to mention Sigurdsson here, I think he's going to end up at Liverpool now Rodgers has. I'm pretty sure the Guly post is just mischief-making. We don't sign back-ups and squad bolsterers, it's a very Rupert Lowe trait. We will however end up with loads of "useful at the time" players on contracts as a legacy of the rapid rise up the Leagues. Will be interesting to see if there are any automatic contract extensions on July 1st, we seemed to have a few unexpected ones last year thanks presumably to promotion clauses. The9 Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 I bet Rodriguez starts in the first game if fully fit I wouldn't bet against it, but Adkins did show faith with Harding for a few games before starting Fox, and Sharp and Lee were in and out when they first arrived, so he doesn't always throw them straight in. You'd expect a full pre-season would mean we'd go with Rodriguez, but there might be some desire to see what Lambert can do in that company as well. To some extent it will depend on the opposition, I think.
Turkish Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 The fact of the matter is we have 4 good and different types of strikers. We have some excellent options. The power and guile of Lambert, the penalty area poacher in Sharp, the pace and workrate of Lee and Rodriguez who appears to have it all. I'd expect all 4 to have a role to play this season and will be used when the time is right. Maybe now people will start to understand how important it is to have good players and options, not a first XI and a poorer XI as back up and like for like replacements. Saint Garrett Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 Davis RB, CB, Hooiveld, Fox RM, Schneiderlin, Cork, Lallana Lambert, Rodriguez. Why has everyone got us playing 4-5-1? That may be the system we play in the future but cant see us changing to one up front just because we got promoted. And it's pretty irrelevant anyway as it will depend on who we sign and who we are playing.

The Kraken Posted 13 June, 2012 Share Posted 13 June, 2012 Unlikely, but anyway.... Ben Foster Nathaniel Clyne - Jose Fonte - Curtis Davies - Dan Fox Matt Jarvis - Tom Cleverley (loan) - Jack Cork - Adam Lallana Rickie Lambert - Jay Rodriguez For the record, I don't think we have any hope of getting Ben Foster or Tom Cleverley; I'd suggest the others are reasonable enough targets. And I can't see us going with Schneiderlin and Cork as the first choice CM pairing; if its not a youngish loanee then I wouldn't mind an older head in there, a PL version of Dean Hammond if you will.
