Interesting to note he says if he was playing now there was no way he could stay at Southampton. Bit of a reality check for all those that think our team of academy graduates are going it stay with us for their entire careers.

Fair point, though the example he gives of someone going from £10k p/w to £150k p/w would never happen. Morgan was on £10k in the championship - its as if City would swoop for a young, inexperienced championship player and suddenly make them one of their top earners.

Oxo was on £25K p/w at Arsenal - he's now reportedly had his wage doubled. Given some of our top earners are probably slightly over £30K p/w, the gap is smaller. Obviously we're underpaying but we're not a million miles away once you put on a figure on being settled and the other things that kept le tiss with us.

Very surprised he was only on £3500 a week at the end of his career!!

but it's all equivalent to the time and he's said other clubs were similar anyway hence why he didn't move.

re academy players not staying with us because of huge salaries offered elsewhere, yes maybe true but we're not going to get loadsa of AOC coming along so not all will be at that level and be at the level of playing with Saints and so would stay (possibly)

Not sure why so shocked... he wanted to stay and signed a contract to that amount. It was ultimately his choice, and at the time of signing it, it would have been a pretty good deal for a club of Saint's size. Later contracts were higher, for players who made a far lesser contribution, but its also about timing... Le Tiss got unlucky really in signing his last contract before the next wage explosion.

He could and should have been able to play for another couple of seasons really as well which would have seen a nice final pay day... but like many of us, he did not exactly look after his body during those crucial late 20s - enjoyed a pie - and that does not help with injuries that he suffered towards the end of his career.

The problem now is not wages being stupid for the very best World class players, thats the norm in any sport, its the level paid for very average players that is crippling many clubs, or restricting their progress and development. Wage caps and fair play rules are just booll ooks. If the Prem, FL, or FA were rreally serious about levelling teh playing field and encourging youth development, they would introduce rules that restricted transfers of contracted under 23s (there would be a way around EU/employment laws) to allow clubs to benefit on the pitch from investmnet in youth, not just in financial terms... Those who say the smaller clubs 'need' to sell to survive are usually those at bigger clubs happy to poach - if wages across teh divisions were more realistic, the lower league clubs would not NEED to sell youngster early, no one would.... but as usual, teh rules and regs are stacked in favour of the bigger clubs... and that is the real problem to fair play and fair wages

Kudos and legendary status to MLT for staying loyal, but he should still have been able to set himself up on the wage he was one and the money he earned form football...and it was his choice.

Is he lying then as I swear I just read that there was not a huge difference between saints and spurs in the mid 90s???

I previously read he was on 5k and Spurs were offering 7.5k a week. Guess its difficult to be precise as there's basic + win and goal bonuses etc. Remember it being reported that in 2003 Beats was on 22.5k but with all the bonuses it meant it was around 33k average due to the success that year...

The time he nearly went to spurs (or Chelsea) was around 1994-1995

There was no way he would have got over £25k a week then

I remember when andy cole moved to man u and he was the highest paid player in the league.... £24k a week

Why does he insist on continuing to peddle that spread bet story lie? It was complete rubbish made up in the hope of getting some press attention to help publicise his book. I would imagine he had heart failure when he heard the Police were getting involved.

Bookies didn't take spread bets on games at that time which weren't televised and the game concerned was on a bank holiday Monday and not on tv.

Was it televised abroad though? Outside of this country essentially every Premiership game is televised and available to view live.

I would imagine (This is just a guess) that the 3.5k was his basic, with appearance, assist, goal and win bonuses to be added and that by the end of the season that looked something like 10k a week.

Actually you're pretty much right. He said just as much in his testimonial programme back in 2002. Can't remember the exact figures but basically with all his add-ons he got near to 10k a week one year. It's insane really when you think about it, just goes to show that he really was a one in a million player who was happy enough with his lot.

24 grand a week is peanuts for todays high earners in football. Its crazy to think how much wages are today for the top players in comparison. Just thinking of the figures though, 24 grand a week in any other profession is more than average Joe earns in a year. Crazy money. Le tiss was one of a kind though and we were very lucky to have him for the little he got.
