whelk Posted 11 June, 2012 Share Posted 11 June, 2012 AOC was very impressive after the game talking to media and came across very well Theo is equally eloquent and level headed. Gareth Bale whilst slightly shyer is still very grounded and humble sounding. Credit to our academy system that we are producing fine young men unlike the primadonnas from Man Utd - Morrison, Pogba for example. Assume we haven't got lucky and along the lines of the Jesuit saying "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man"

positivepete Posted 11 June, 2012 Share Posted 11 June, 2012 Nathan dyer is a parents dream Same goes for that fella who was at Newcastle Well to be fair we did sack Ranger. Shame other clubs felt fit to take him on. He is still getting into trouble. I suppose he will always be taken on by someone who values results rather than image, see Barton etc.
Saint J 77 Posted 11 June, 2012 Share Posted 11 June, 2012 If our academy is responsible for level headed behaviour in post match interviews then great but it would be nice if it would encourage them to show a bit more loyalty and stick around longer in future
Thedelldays Posted 11 June, 2012 Share Posted 11 June, 2012 Do you not think these young lads have their parents to thank for their behaviour and maybe us for a great deal of their talent?
Micky Posted 11 June, 2012 Share Posted 11 June, 2012 Do you not think these young lads have their parents to thank for their behaviour and maybe us for a great deal of their talent? This. Parents do p's and q's, academy do soccer skills. Manners cost nothing - my parents used to say. Clip round the lug 'ole for elbows on table, not saying thank you, not respecting your elders...! Seriously though, good manners do start at home - though I suspect that the academy do train the boys in media issues, and as the op says have done a good job on the likes of Oxo, Theo and GB. Go to Saints academy with attitude issues and you'll be slung out on your ear, no matter how good you are.
david in sweden Posted 12 June, 2012 Share Posted 12 June, 2012 I think that "signing" lads for the Academy isn't just about getting good schoolboy talent, it takes a little more. Considering those players who have moved on already ...TW, GB AOC.... it seems that people commented they were very mature for their age even when 12/13, and had good sense and a natural talent for football, and that, together with good mentoring from senior pro's makes the difference. You can (try to) coach any half-intelligent person to do the simple things well, but it does seem that most of our Academy lads (even those who didn't make it) ...are a cut above the average and don't just have their brains in their boots. dronskisaint Posted 12 June, 2012 Share Posted 12 June, 2012 It would be an interesting discussion had we been offered a young Wayne Rooney? As much talent as you can cram in a body-frame but a background and upbringing that has shaped the personality...our Academy can only do so much! I was actually commenting about those three " departed players " mentioned, but obviously not everyone who goes through the Academy. ...but growing up in Liverpool with his background and with boxing as first interest, perhaps Wayne's upbringing was par for the course on Merseyside?
