The Sun says Saints are competing with Reading to sign Mariappa from Watford. Born in Harrow so he fits the 'young, English' test but has chosen to play for Jamaica. (Is Harrow actually in Jamaica?)

According to the almighty Wikipedia, Watford's player of the year, 25 year old centre back. Wanted by Newcastle but 3 bids were rejected in January. Wigan agreed terms but he rejected a move there. He has captained Watford before and is officially their current vice captain.

 

Seems to be just our type of signing.

Ha probably not. If I remember rightly though he won a lot in the air and whilst the whole of Watford were gash, and us not much better on that day, he looked ok.

Good, powerful centre back. Exactly the sort of CB we need. Young as well, only 24/25.

Quite short. Good on the ball, versatile, played at PL level before (and did well - albeit at right-back). If he was taller he'd be first choice for a lower half side, his height is the only real doubt as to whether he can step up effortlessly.
