Saints Record Transfers

In the wake of the as yet unconfirmed but compelling breaking news on the Jay Rod thread, I was wondering who is our top ten spent money transfers?

It will seem that it goes something like:

1. Jay Rod, £Not sure

2. Rory Delap, £4 mill

3. Delagado/Chala, £3.2 mill or so joint....

Can anyone fill in the gaps? I'm sure there are some shockers in there.

Some random recollections to put this in context:

I remember when we were all astonished when Saints first splashed out to join the 'big time' , spending £275,000 on Peter Osgood. That was the sort of money we never thought Saints would spend on a single player (1974).

We later spent £400,000 on Charlie George in 1979, £440,000 on KK (1980) before breaking the half million mark on David Armstrong (1981).

Alan McLoughlin was our first (disastrous) £1m player .

But if we want a parrallel with Jay R at c£6m , remember that when we were first promoted in to the old First Division in 1966 Ted Bates spent - what I believe was a club record at the time - £60,000 on a player who had never played in the top flight before, Ron Davies. If JR is half as good as Big Ron, it will be money well spent.

A couple more 5mill signings wouldn't take our spending to £25mill. I can see our spending maybe knocking on 20.

For Delap to be our 4th or 5th record signing that would mean signing 3 or 4 players other players for north of £4m. Meaning our spending would be £20-£25m. Come on dumbass, think, think.

You missed out Jim Steele..£80k club record at the time.

Doesn't need to be more than £25mill though does it though?

Anyway, I'm just amazed we could spend this much, some thickos on here think we couldn't even compete with Swansea in the transfer market.

It would have to be a minimum of 3-4 players at £4m each, so it would be very likely it would be £25m+.

See you've failed to understand dumbass, as usual.

6m + 4.5m + 4.5m + 4.5m = 19.5m

I take it maths isn't your best subject at school.

That's pretty much the minimum we could do it for though.

I personally think we'll see one more signing around £5M, and the rest will either be decent loans or no more than £2M - £3M.

As the Kraken says that is the absolutely minimum. Its unlikely wed sign 3 players all for exactly the same fee isnt it. I see common sense isn't something you are blessed with, dumbass.

I wouldn't be surprised if we had a couple more £5mill +. I think Cortese will bring in quality and will push the boat out if he has to.

Just trying to do the maths for you sweetheart, I wouldn't be surprised if we spent over 25mill.

I'm just amazed how some people still think we can't compete with Swansea City in the transfer market. LOL

Well we'll see. But we know we need to bring in at least 1 new keeper, Martin going suggests we'll get at least 1 CB (potentially 2 if Seaborne is not back or up to it), I think we'll go for a CM, and there's been reported interest in Matt Jarvis. That's going to cost enough, without lashing out £10M+ on two of them. Do that, its at least £16M for 3 players and we're still likely to need/go for 3 other starting first team players.

That would potentially see us spending around £25M and upwards. Can't see it being that high myself.

It would only take 2 more players to be signed above £4.5m for delap to be the 4th highest signing. So £6m + £5.5m + £5m would be a little bit under the £25m your saying there is no chance of us spending.

Yes, but he originally said Delap could be the 4th OR 5th in the list. 5th would mean 3 extra signings above Delap.

Besides, I never said that there is no chance of us spending that much, unless you can point out where I did. I simply stated I don't think we will.

I think Cortese will invest whatever is needed. He won't bring in sh!t players just to make up the numbers.

We probably won't spend £25mill, you can get good free's in or loans. But if we have to spend that to get the quality we need I think we will.

Who said that? I know some said it was arrogant to think we could outbid established premier league clubs because our owners are billionaires. Some dumbasses used our higher season ticket prices as proof of we an an outbid Swansea, even though they hadn't even gone on sale at the time!!

I'm not saying we'll bring in sh*t. I just think that at least one or two of the players we bring in will be akin to Jaidi when we got him; experienced, been there done it, probably higher end of the wage scale but 29, 30 and over so little transfer fee. I think we'll spend another £5M or so on one more player, and as i said before no more than £2M or ££m for the rest, with potentially at least 1 or 2 of them either a free or a loan.

Yeah, because the club won't take into account future income from Season Tickets when working out the budget for the season.

Sorry, I wasn't setting it out as how we broke our records, but just some recollections of big money signings.

One thing I could not remember was when we first broke that six figure barrier. I don't actually recall anyone for £100,000 so did we go from Steele to Osgood ?

I hope they don't gamble on future income, that's partly what did for Leeds, not a wise strategy. Although I'd expect nothing else from you.

I think how much we spend on transfers is just one end of the issue.

We should look on the whole package of wages and transfers. Robert Green on a free transfer would eat up a major chunk of our budget, for example.

I'm sure we'll spends more than an additional £20m on new players. But a good % will be salaries.

good comments Badger, but just think what those equivalent transfer sums would be ... at today's prices?

What is the inflation rate ....since 1966?
