Dog Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Any good for a weekend? Or maybe looking at Abegaveny or Monmouth, somewhere around Gloucester or Hereford. Any ideas, looking for old towns.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 I went there with the Mrs last year. We stayed in a premier inn just on the outskirts for next to nothing and drove into Bath. Really good if like me, you are into Roman history. The Roman baths are well worth a trip, some decent pubs around as well and enough little shops to keep her happy without it driving me nuts.
Dog Posted 7 June, 2012 Author Posted 7 June, 2012 I love history & old buildings, rivers & hills. Not sure about Premier Inn though.
Colinjb Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Hereford is worth a visit, some beautiful nearby villages and superb restaurants/bars for an evening out. Used to go there quite a bit but sadly not anymore.
Crazy Diamond Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Bath is indeed a good place to go to, loved my time there. Go to the Huntsman and tell the landlord Kit sent you. He's a good man and runs a great pub.
bristolsaint29 Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Carpenter Arms, about 10 minutes from Bath right on edge of Chew valley, fantastic food and in a beautiful location.
This Charming Man Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 I love history & old buildings, rivers & hills. Not sure about Premier Inn though. Bath and the surrounding area would be ideal for you then. Spent a lot of time there as an ex used to live down there. Lovely city.
dune Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Come to Stamford (near me), a fine georgian town with a nice collection of quality independent shops. Burghley House is just down the road and well worth a visit, and if you're feeling energetic bring your bikes and cycle around Rutland Water.
KK the 2nd Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Not been to Bath for a while but great for a weekend. We stayed in the Hilton on a special deal - well located but a was looking tired. Some lovely little pubs in and around town. Plenty to see and do. Would recommend
doubleonothing Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Always liked Bath. I'm Going there with the Mrs this weekend as she's never been before. I think it's a world heritage site so if you like Romans, Gothic arcitechture etc then it is for you.
bristolsaint29 Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 I love history & old buildings, rivers & hills. Not sure about Premier Inn though. You have Chew valley which is a beautiful area just to the west of Bath with some fantastic pubs in real hidden gems and Chew Lake to go for walks.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 I love history & old buildings, rivers & hills. Not sure about Premier Inn though. It depends on your budget, there are plenty of nice hotels but much more expensive. My trip down there was just a cheap weekend away, not really a holiday of any kind, £20 a room or something similar. The hotels in town where roughly £100 per night so would have put the cost of the trip right up. Trust Lenny, the stay was very comfortable. Loads of good small towns around bath as well, plenty of places to stop if you are driving.
dune Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 You could try this place out Dog and let me know if it's alright as i'm planning on a short break here. It's supposed to be one of the most haunted pubs in England. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187047-d605801-Reviews-New_Inn_Hotel-Gloucester_Gloucestershire_England.html
ThreeSixty Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Great pubs, great Rugby ground. Pretty much all i ever see in Bath.
jjsaint Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Bath is amazing - a bit posh and very studenty though - you have been warned! DO not miss the Old Green Tree which is a fantastic pub not too far from the Abbey.
Junction 9 Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 If you want a hotel recommendation, the McDonalds Bath spa, is fantastic. 10mins walk into town. Would go back in a shot.
jawillwill Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Good place to have a nice w@nk. Make sure you don't sit with your back to the taps while you're doing it though.
Tony F Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 I love history & old buildings, rivers & hills. Not sure about Premier Inn though. Premier Inn may well surprise you, if you haven't used one before. Normally cheap if you book well in advance - pricey nearer the time
moonraker Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 To add a few more pointers on my home city. Pubs (real pubs) The Old Green Tree - Green Street The Raven - Queen Street (Great Pies) The Salamader - John Street The Hop Pole - Upper Bristol Road (Slightly out of the City centre near Victoria park) The Garricks Head (Sawclose next door to the Theatre Royal) There are loads of other good bars and pubs. Avoid The Grapes Westgate Street, The Crystal Palace, Saracens Head, Lamb and Lion The Roman Baths are a must, but the best way to get an understanding of Bath and its Georgian history is to simply wander around the upper part of the town, take in the obvious gems of the Circus and the Royal Crescent (there are actually 7 crescents) but just follow your nose down the side streets, if you are feeling energetic take a walk up Beechen Cliff to Alexandra Park for the best panoramic views of the city, Sydney Gardens is a gem of a Park, walk over Pultney Bridge down Great Pultney Street to the Holborn Museum which is at the front of the park, the Great Western Railway and the Kennet and Avon canal traverse the park.
buctootim Posted 7 June, 2012 Posted 7 June, 2012 Canoe down a stretch of the Wye. Good fun, beautiful scenery and not hard work. http://www.canoethewye.co.uk/
