Saints in the early 70s

A couple of high quality, extended highlights that I've not seen before, for your enjoyment.

I was at the Wolves match, my first experience of football violence, we were in the end to the right, but in many small disparate groups. Someone gobbed off about Dougan or something and got a punch from nowhere that splattered the contents of his nose over us all. Happy days!

My son found this on youtube the other week. Saints at Derby 71/2.

Some good footage showing Cloughie at his most arrogant, and a reminder as to why he was hated by many during this period.

Also, I was amazed by our penalty taker in this, as I only recall Big Ron and Channon taking them from this era.

Also interesting to note that the handball which gave us the penalty was accepted as just something that had to be done by the commentator. No sending off for such a misdemeanour back then.

One that's featured here before, but what the hay.

A few observations :

Gabriel still taking penalties in December 1971, despite my earlier comment.

Probably Tommy Jenkins best game for us ?

Good to see Mick Channon and Terry Paine turning Bobby Moore inside out.

That ginger haired no7 for West Ham always struck me as a complete and utter c^nt, wonder what became of him.

Barry Davies then was far better than the dullards who commentate nowadays.

I was at the York City game at Bootham Crescent

Travelled across from Leeds where I was a student and remember it was good to see a lot of familiar faces particularly those who had travelled up overnight after the Adam & Eve club had closed

Recollect that York lowered a flag in the corner of the ground when we went 3-1 up (presume as a sign of defeat) only for it to be raised when they equalised

We won the replay as I recollect

I went to the replay. 3-2 in an almost carbon copy game, 3-1 up with 6 minutes to go, but no equaliser this time. We went out to Liverpool next round.

Brought back some memories. In the game at West Ham that season Tom did a similar run from his own half but scored. I went to the game at York and you wonder why we oldies are amazed when people leave with 5 minutes to go and we are only 2 up.

Thanks Ron.

If I recall correctly the WHU game came the week after we had been beaten at Everton 8-0, to then go down 3-0 in the next game!!! Tommy Jenkins goal at Upton Park was one of the best i can ever recall, my first away game an evening match going with my oldest brother and dad never to be forgotten.

I think Cloughie was superb, although at the time not. Can someone please delete the Leeds game,

The week after the (shudder!!) 8-0, we lost 5-2 at home to ManUre.

Only the opening minutes here. Best got a hat-trick. 17 year old Sammy McIlroy had made his debut the week before. Gabriel right-back and Kirkup left back.:scared:

We then lost 1-0 at Spurs and then came the WHam game.

Nightmare week! I went to the Everton game and the 5-2 beating.

At Goodison it was freezing and snowing (I recall lumps of ice falling from the front edge of the stand roof onto the pitch!), and when we got back to the minibus in Stanley Park the windscreen had been smashed. We called in at Port Vale FC social club on the way home and were taken out onto the snow-covered terracing in the dark by their manager. That view sticks in my mind as you could see the whole ground and pitch so clearly in the dark because of the snow.

Well done finding the 5-2 game, I searched YTube for that myself but couldn't find it. I'm sure I've seen full highlights of that somewhere.

unfortunate that someof these old gems, show us on the losing end, but younger fans (to whom most of these guys are only names of old men) can see the quality that they could produce.

Even seeing the late George Best on song doesn't hurt QUITE so much, he really was a one-off talent.

and great to see Jimmy Gabriel in a couple of clips, he really was a versatile player, and played in 5 different positions during one season, including emergency goalie on one occasion, when there was only 1 sub. allowed on the bench.
