Limerick Next Season

Totally off the pace of what's been discussed at the moment. But I just met a chap in Limerick (Ireland) who asked if I was a Saints fan based on my jersey. He wasn't wearing a deerstalker.

Anyway, he's involved with Limerick City football club. He told me they're trying to get Saints to be the opening match next season for Limerick's return to The Market's Field ground.

Saints were the last big team(with proper internationals etc) to play Limerick in european competition, so they're hoping that link will persuade Saints to come over for the marquee opening of the new era at the Stadium where Limerick had all their glory days back in the day.

I hope Saints do this. Not just for selfish reasons (I grew up in Limerick and live 30 mins from the ground) but there is a lot of Irish Saints fans over here who'd come down and considering our ambition it would be a good way of building a bigger fan base in an area so close to home.

Kids today, can't separate them from their mobiles, but born and bred on the phone? thats taking things a bit far.

That would be quality, I am a corkman and have been a saints fan for the last 16 years. A while ago I tried looking up a Irish saints following group on either facebook or whatever. There is one but it is more associated with the north of ireland and is rarely used. Does anybody know of any others because there are groups who follow coventry, derby etc who meet up regularly and go to games also!

I can remember going to that game,I think Keegan was playing for us then, the game was rubbish but we had a very good time and plenty of good banter with the locals.

Yep I remeber that game, the barrage of abuse, the bricks and other missiles hurled in our direction, running the gauntlet under military escort. Happy Times :?

My uncle played for Limerick in the late 60's and scored in the Irish FA Cup Final for them.

I remember him being invited by them to attend the 80's match at the Dell along with a few other locals that had plied their trade on the Emerald Isle.

Proud as punch of my uncle Dave then to think of him having a sherbet or two with my heroes up in the players lounge.

Isn't that the funny story from when we last played there about the St Johns ambulance men walking off in different directions and dropped the Limerick player on the stretcher?

Nah, that was Carrick Rangers a few years before.

I went to Limerick for the European tie, eventful couple of days.

The crossing of the Irish Sea was something to be experienced that night, I almost kissed the ground (Pope stylee) when we stepped off in Cork!

It was at the height of the Bobby Sands era, so a bunch of English football fans rolling into town and Union flags out on show was never gonna be popular with the locals. Although we never encountered anything during the day, quite a few of us spent a happy and beery afternoon in a bar across the road from the ground, after the game the mood changed for a bit. There was a brick-throwing mob coming at us as we walked out...the local OB seemed happy enough for them to use us for targets for a bit, they only stepped in when Saints fans made a charge at them. But that was as bad as it got.

Hope they're going back to a new and improved stadium because our 'terracing' back then was a 'specially constructed' area made of rickety old scaffolding!

Could be tempted on a nostalgic return tho.

Played golf a few times in Limerick - fabulous courses and great hospitality.

The game your think about was Carrick Rangers away in the Cup Winneres cup 1976/77

I went to the Limerick away game, on Clive Foley's coaches, it was fine in and around the town before the game, but due to IRA and anti British feelings it was realy hostile at the ground and although it had been arranged to have an event with Limerick fans after this had to be cancelled as mobs arrived trying to attack both us and our coaches. Won the game 3-0 though

The OB used the excuse of an IRA meeting taking place on the estate behind our end (probably just a gathering of bricks for after) for not playing our National Anthem, that was customary at all European games. Still, we did give them a rousing rendition anyway.

Naw better to play Bray (as we did a few years ago) - only 10 mins for me to get there :-) Exiled Saint in Ireland (bit of a ring to that??), and you are a leper unless you support one of the big 4 or Hoops or have any famous Irish players in your team - apparently DC did not count??
