everton said they had no money last january and signed jelevic...didnt they?

Sold Bilyaletdinov for about 7 million to get him.

Posted
ah...right, thought they were going on about money needed to pay off debts etc

Nah, to be fair he was allowed to use a fair chunk of the fee from Bilyaledinov. They have a sell before you buy policy.

By selling Rodwell in the summer it freed up the money and wages for Pienaar and Mirallas.

Looking at it another way, Adkins is hardly going to come out and say that our keepers aren't good enough and we desperately need to sign another, because if any potential signing didn't come off we'd then have three keepers Adkins has publicly admitted he has no confidence in.

Posted

My guess is that we are not interested in him.

The interest in the summer was before we signed Gazza.

Gazza has the potential to be a very good keeper but needs developing.

It would be strange to have two in that category.

This season Gazza has looked like he does have potential but made some silly mistakes.

Sounds like Butland is similar but making more mistakes at lower level

If we were offered a 32 year old keeper, Celtic and fiorintina experienced, 45 polish caps we would be happy that we are OK for year or so.

Having said that 10 minutes in last game I was desperate for a new keeper!!

The Nixon comments could easily be, he would say that wouldn't he, knowing won't be proved wrong and saves face.

Sure he has mixed success rate not the good some here say!

Still don't understand why we have bought a keeper with potential but who needs developing for a few years. He may or may not develop into a decent keeper but you can't mess around with buying a keeper. I mean look at Bart. IMO we should have bought better.

We didn't just buy one keeper, we also signed an experienced top flight/international keeper.

As a panic buy, when the window had shut and we realised that we were short in the goalkeeping department.

What's Chris Kirkand up to these days?

Now Kirkland WAS a class keeper but - sadly for him - very injury prone. I remember being hugely impressed by him the first time I saw him play for Coventry at the Dell.

Actually we signed three keepers in the summer. Gazza, Boruc and Cropper who has done alright with the U21s. Looking better each game and commands his area well. Young but good prospect.

Take with a pinch of salt?.......this person has had a few correct calls.....

@Transfers_123: Goalkeeper Jack Butland will tomorrow hold talks with Southampton after bid was accepted. #SFC #BCFC

he will go to chelsea and retire...like sinclaire and rodwell at man city..

why do players do this....I know people will say £££££££...but they will get ridiculous money anywhere they go...

We'll see how long his "i'll move for first team football" lasts.

I mean he;s clearly going to get ahead of Cech and Reina. Might have shout at Newcastle but can't see them dropping Krul.

Being stuck on the bench at big clubs helped all those young English keepers like Wright, Carson, Foster and Kirkland didn't it?

Agree, as much fun as it must be to pick up obscene wages, isnt part of the buzz of being a football actually playing..?

Chelsea already have Thibault Courtois in reserve, a player who actually performs at a high level week in, week out. When they're ready to pension off Cech Courtois will replace him. Butland's agent obviously doesn't have much imagination. He'll end up at Villa or something like that.

Coutois is meant to be having an immense season. Surely he'll be in the Chelsea team by next season if not the one after. Butland surely would be 3rd choice ? He'd be better off going to Arsenal or Man Utd than Chelsea.

Depends, for most fans yes, but not all professional players are 'fans' of football, they play because they happen to be good at it and you can make a lot of money out of career in it. Hell I don't like Baseball but if I had a lot of natural talent for it and someone gave me £10 million a year to occasionally play it I'd be pretty content.

True, but on some level my competitive streak would kick in and i'd want to improve, be better and actually play. Maybe just me though. With sport i'll always be competitive.

That's a professional attitude and a lot of people will apply that to their jobs even if they don't particularly like them.

Lol didn't think teams were actually going to pay for Butland! By the way Birmingham's finances are going I thought he would have ended up on a free anyway soon enough when they go pop.

Posted
Fair play to him if true. Footballer not wanting to sit on the bench for cash shocker.

Sign him up but loan him back to Brum for the rest of the season. They merry-go-round we've had in goal hasn't done anyone any favours. We should stick with Boruc and next season we can go in with Butland and Gazza challenging for the No.1 spot. If Gazza doesn't show enough improvement we can always decide to keep Boruc one more season and have him challenge with Butland for the No.1 spot.

I'd still prefer a more experienced goallie to be signed (Stekelenburg from AS Roma?) but I can live with Boruc for the rest of this season and a combo of Butland/Gazza for next.

The debate mirrors that for Gazzaniga. Both will be prominent goalkeepers in years to come but they are still learning their trade at the minute.

Posted

As we found with Gazzaniga, flair isn't enough to be a first choice Prem GK; experience is essential which only comes with the years. Butland was faced with a problem because Birmingham needed the money so were anxious to cash in his value but only cover roles were on offer in the Prem. Barnsley does look like a step down but you can only play in a first team where there is a vacancy and it is only for a limited period. If he is as good as his selection for the England squad seemed to indicate, his chance will come but if we had taken him, its likely he would have been third choice here, so he probably wouldn't have chosen us anyway!

Well chaps and chapesses, he was always going to be expensive - good players often are - but methinks Stoke City's ''outstanding'' Jack Butland is doing a pretty darn good impression of being the best young keeper in the Premier League at the moment.

So with all the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, does he go now down as the proverbial 'one that got away'?

Posted

He's been great so far this season, but I think Forster could be our number one for a good few years (providing his recovery goes well) and he's also an excellent keeper.

It's time to worry when your goalkeeper is man of the match every week.

The difference between Gazzaniga and Butland is that while one had a lot of game time in the lower leagues, INCLUDING loan periods at Stoke, the other one was thrown into the deep end time and time again in our many GK crisis with a season in League Two under his belt, playing the "dome" world of U-21 games in between.

One's evolution before January 2013 was handled properly, the other's wasn't, and since January 2013 has been managed properly by its new club, while again the other's (who had the benefit of not moving teams) hasn't.

Probably been mentioned in this thread already but the scouting of Butland gets a decent amount of coverage in the book "The Nowhere Men" about football scouts by Michael Calvin. The particular match in question Butland had an absolute nightmare but it was 6 months before his Team GB call up.

Lol. While that is true, that is not the difference between Butland and Gazzanigga.

The difference between Butland and Gazzaniga is, one's a goalkeeper whilst the other one is Tommy Forecast in disguise.

More than harsh. Gazza needs confidence to play well, and throwing him in and then fans booing and mocking him only makes him lose confidence. Maybe he does need to go out on loan. If RK is going to put KD on the bench, he may as well, if we can get in another no3 keeper.
