Turkish Posted 9 July, 2012 Share Posted 9 July, 2012 Christ, I can't believe people are analysing a laugh when asked at the end of an interview about a transfer. Maybe we should ask Simon Peach if it was a PMSL - I'd love too join them and I am!! How did you guess?!! LMFAO - I'm going to be the best keeper in the world, Why the f*ck would I join Southampton? ROFL - like a MASSIVE club like them would be interested in me, I've only played 21 times in L2 you know LOL - well you never know, *laughs and winks* hopefully I will........ Simon, can you confirm which of the above type of laughs it was so we don't right him off as a c*nt with an attitude that we don't want.

david in sweden Posted 12 July, 2012 Share Posted 12 July, 2012 Why do so many people assume he's absolutely definitely going to develop into the next great thing and so any money we pay for him now is a bargain? Chris Kirkland was supposed to be Englands next bright star. Look how that ended up. Steve Simonnson was supposed to have an amazing future. Look how that ended up. Ben Foster was going to be Man Utds and England's kepper for years to come. Didn't quite get there. Joe Lewis has had a huge fall from grace. Joe Hart is the rarer example of a keeper in his prime in his early 20s. Buttland could be amazing and on the international scene for 15 years. He could equally turn out to be only quite decent enough to play Premier League or Championship for his career, similar to Rob Green and all the others mentioned. nice analysis Kraken, .......but your list omits Tommy Forecast ....once tipped by the Spurs as a future Engalnd keeper.....WOW ! If he is, he's so far managed to pull the wool over the eyes of England, fellow professionals, pundits, scouts and supposedly even the might saints. RobM Posted 20 July, 2012 Share Posted 20 July, 2012 It's a bit dumb, narrow-minded perhaps, to think that one TV appearance will suddenly make him worth a huge sum of money. People in the game will know all about Butland already, one live TV appearance won't suddenly change things. Scouting isn't done via TV alone, anybody involved in knowing what talent exists in football will be more than aware.

LostBoys Posted 20 July, 2012 Share Posted 20 July, 2012 I thought Butland looked quite good although some of the saves were right at him. His value has probably risen tonight and if he has a good tournament. I thought Cork was good as well - some of the others were dire - weren't we interested in Sordell at one point. Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 20 July, 2012 Share Posted 20 July, 2012 Just watched the GB friendly against Brazil. The lad played a blinder. It would've been 4 or 5 if it wasn't for Butland. St_Tel49 Posted 20 July, 2012 Share Posted 20 July, 2012 (edited) Playing 45 mins In a Friendly does prove you cut the mustard. I have rarely seen a young keeper look so composed in what, despite it being a friendly, was still a high profile game. I can well understand why Birmingham want top dollar for him. So would we if he were ours. He is a star in the making and I am just sorry he is not ours. PS we should have paid the money they wanted - feel free to jeer at me in a couple of years if I am wrong. Webby Posted 21 July, 2012 Share Posted 21 July, 2012 You cannot judge a player on 45m IMO. Butland stopped some shots, that's what keepers do. I'm not saying he's not good but let's not go over the top about it.

Classic example Forecast, who looked great when Butlands age Saints have opted for Gazzanegra, who, from what video snips I have seen, shows a lot of potential IMHO ( No point in Butland now, the ages are too close ) Plus, being Mercenary about it, getting Paulo has saved us circa £5M Another bit of shrewd business by Nicola I think

Living in Medway, close (but not too close ;-)) to Gills' stadium, I have seen a lot of Paulo and trust me, he is an excellent goalkeeper who should only get better. I have never seen Butland play, but he would have to go some to beat what I have already seen of our new signing.
