david in sweden Posted 5 July, 2012 Share Posted 5 July, 2012 Apparantly Spurs are keen on Butland now. Big opportunity missed if we don't get him in, going to be a class keeper for years. I think half the Prem. are, but a class keeper for years? .....that sounds like what Spurs told us when we signed Forecast - doesn't it ? NO NO, but we know he's better than that - don't we ? Professor Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 If Butland wants a guarantee of first team football he probably needs to stay at Brum. Sounds like he wouldn't get it at Spurs and the reported offer from there with a loan back would up his pay but limit his freedom to move anywhere else in18 months time, as well as preventing him from staying at Brum if they win promotion. If he comes to Saints there can't be a guarantee of first team football because he'd have to compete with Kelvin but that would make it up to him to play as well as he can to get the spot on merit. Choice for Butland seems to be Prem now or Prem later with no career reason to sign for Spurs but maybe higher wages.

Miltonroader07 Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 My son spoke to Jack in Clevedon Somerset where he is from and he said that he had been promised first team footie at Birmingham and did not feel ready for the Prem. Apparrently he feels that he would rather gain experience in the Champ than come into the Prem not feeling ready and let in 41 goals and de-motivate him and his carreer. I think I can see his point. He also said if SFC bid £9 million and his terms were amazing he would come but he is not too money motivated. Drives an A4, Red not flash just a nice car for a 19 year old so maybe it is true. Thedelldays Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 (edited) if he is serious about being a footballer, he should stay where he is for at least a season coming to the prem now would just put him on the bench and join a whole big list of "young stars" sitting in the reserves just look at saints in the last few years....the young stars we had really came on well Edited 6 July, 2012 by Thedelldays

Sour Mash Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 We still need two keepers. Hopefully we have plenty of targets. Thedelldays Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 Why? The Kraken Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 Most probably work out cheaper if his reputation and potential is anything to go by. Pay 7m now or potentially after a good season in the Champ 10m-11m next summer? Why do so many people assume he's absolutely definitely going to develop into the next great thing and so any money we pay for him now is a bargain? Chris Kirkland was supposed to be Englands next bright star. Look how that ended up. Steve Simonnson was supposed to have an amazing future. Look how that ended up. Ben Foster was going to be Man Utds and England's kepper for years to come. Didn't quite get there. Joe Lewis has had a huge fall from grace. Joe Hart is the rarer example of a keeper in his prime in his early 20s. Buttland could be amazing and on the international scene for 15 years. He could equally turn out to be only quite decent enough to play Premier League or Championship for his career, similar to Rob Green and all the others mentioned. Ric Posted 6 July, 2012 Share Posted 6 July, 2012 It's refreshing to hear a player putting first team football ahead of a move to the top flight. If he keeps true to his word and spends this year getting first team games in the Championship rather than reserve league games in the Premier League then I'll have a lot of respect for him. I've criticised players for chasing the money ahead of first team football, and even though it might be a loss for Saints, I'm not about to be a hypocrite: I wish more players would do the same. (Which is not to say that I won't be happy if he did sign for us, of course!)

buctootim Posted 8 July, 2012 Share Posted 8 July, 2012 I don't get the obsession with young keepers. It's a nice dream to get one young and have them forever like Buffon or Casillas, but you can sign a keeper of around 30 and have them 7 or 8 years. It's a position where experience helps a lot, so the young keepers need to be really top quality. Ah one of the famous "I dont get this obsession with..." posts. The mythical legions of Saints fans all demanding something risible and only the poster can see the light. Yeah we know. Young keepers are a risk, and you can get a top quality proven keeper 25+ for £6m. No-one to my knoweldge has claimed anything different.

patred44 Posted 9 July, 2012 Share Posted 9 July, 2012 (edited) So there we have it Jack Butland laughs at the idea of coming to Southampton. Well it's not as funny as someone willing to risk over £2m for a rookie keeper whose only claim to fame was getting into the first team at Cheltenham, and being selected by England to go to the Euro's as the tea boy. As soon as Birminghams valuation got in to the realms of fantasy, we should have walked away... Edited 9 July, 2012 by patred44

James Posted 9 July, 2012 Share Posted 9 July, 2012 Oh well, if he did genuinely laugh at the idea of coming to us he is not the kind of player we want around. As has been said already, he's played 24 games for Cheltenham and gone to the Euros basically as a mascot. No way he's worth the kind of money being talked about on here. He might become worth it but in our position we can't risk it. Would much rather Kasper, still young and already better than Butland.
