Daily Mail also running with the story...

Birmingham are confident that will be the case. When the youngster was farmed out on loan to Cheltenham last season, a staggering 52 scouts were in attendance to watch the Robins' match at Burton Albion.

52 scouts were in attendance to watch the Robins' match at Burton Albion! Blimey thats a lot of scouts for one player. I don't think we will get him. I mean if he has the choice of Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs etc... Obviously we don't now who is interested but I would expect all the big clubs to be there sniffing around. He would be a quality signing if we could sign him up though.

Being realistic, this kid must know he has a VERY bright future if he's going to the Euros as a keeper as a teenager. If we remove our biased specs we are just another team that got promoted to the Prem and will be bookies', and everyone else's, favourites to be relegation fodder. I struggle to see why he'd commit to a long term contract with us when he knows he could be back in the Championship next year (sorry, but its a distinct possibility). I know recently quite a lot of very promising keepers have played for struggling premiership sides but it has almost always been on loan, and usually from one of the top sides.

I'd LOVE him to come, but can't really see why he'd pick us as a long term option. Maybe if we got a couple of years' Premier league pedigree under our belts. He'd be better off going to Fulham - Schwarzer is 40 now!

Would be a good signing, probably not good enough to displace Kelvin (but I believe Davis should be our number 1 anyway), and by the time Davis retires, Butland would be at the right age to start.

I agree, but it's along way to the winning post. If Brum are short of cash..they will look to unload Foster first, and maybe keep Butland.

With so many clubs watching him, it'll be a test of their resolve to hang on to him, and of Saints' ....if they're determined to sign him!

......or is this just another of the Mirror's " EXCLUSIVE " rumours "?.

If he goes to a top six side he will be second choice for a long time, they all have their first choice keepers set. If he chose us there is a good chance he could be first choice by some point this season.

He'll have plenty of offers.

I fear he'll go to one of the bigger clubs, like Everton or Villa.

After recent events, I doubt he'd cross the divide from Brum to Villa. He certainly wouldn't join us to be No 2 to KD and I doubt we'd be paying that sort of money for a No 2. More likely to join one of the top 6 and be loaned back out to a Championship team like Foster was.

Hmmmm not getting excited about this simply because Neil Moss, Paul Smith, Bart, even Tommy Forecast, were all touted as the next great thing between the sticks. This lad has hardly played any first team football and that was not I front of a 30k plus stadium crowd, could all be a bit of clever marketing by Brum.

"impressed in training!". By all accounts Stuart Downing is stunning in training, however come match day and the heat of battle he can't hit a cows ar$e with a Banjo.

I don't think clever marketing by Birmingham could get him in the squad for Euro 2012.

With Foster due to leave this summer, if I were a Brum fan, I'd be saying that Butland will be their new number one and would be better off staying with them and getting some decent playing time and experience.

From a Saints fans point of view? Yes please - a young goalkeeper in the England team. Would be great at Kelvin's protege.

I don't recall any of them being talked of in the same way as Butland to be honest.

But as others have said, larger clubs than us will be in for him.

54 scouts watching him at Cheltenham. NA and NC probably know we have little chance of signing him but want to send a messaage to players like Rodriguez and other targets that Saints are serious about competing next year, not just relegation fodder.

I can easily see him coming happily to Saints, whether that will be a good thing for us I am not so sure. Looking at the standard of England goalies, with many better not even wanting to be considered for England. If you start your reference at Premier goalies rather than England goalies you start getting a better perspective.

Just what top club or even Premier club will give him the opportunity? I expect if Saints were to sign him it would be on the basis of a straight fight between him and Kelvin and he's not going to get near such good odds else where.

I'd go along with that thought, but we can also expect to see Robert Green pop up in " a Prem.side " - as he has no new deal with WHam....yet.

the only reason hes in the England squad is because the England goal keeping coach is Birminghams goal keeping coach.Do people think that Robert Green is any better than Kelvin. You have to ask yourself why Butland has got in front of Kelvin and the answer is we havent got the England Goal keeping coach at St Marys

Its really not, do you honestly think Butland deserves to be in the squad over Kelvin? He's only played a handful of games on loan at a league 2 side. I think its fair enough to be looking to the future but seems very convinient that the kid has immediately come to Hodgson's attention since he appointed the Brum keeping coach for England.

Butland has been hyped long before being picked by Hodgson.

Butland has been called up because he is seen potential long term competition for Joe Hart for the number 1 jersey and to give him international experience of tournament football even though he is unlikely to play. Kelvin Davis is 35 years old and there would be little point calling him up to be 3rd choice if that was the thinking behind what they wanted for a 3rd choice keeper.

Calling young players up to the England squad long before they are ready to play just heaps unnecessary pressure on them - particularly when they have yet to play above league 2. Im not sure KD should have been the third choice goalkeeper, but am certain it shouldn't have been Butland.

He hasnt even played a first team game for Brum. The only reason hes in the squad is because of Dave Watson new England G/K coach end of.

Nothing to do with doing well for England under 21's? Did that have anything to do with Dave Watson?

He is also being scouted by a large number of Premier League teams? Why is that? Is that anything do with Dave Watson?

He's only played 6 games for U21s...how impressive could he have been?
