Newcastle Players Released

Newcastle fans oop north on Facebook are saying getting rid of Guthrie is a mistake

He's 25 now and Newcastle are probably planning to try and push on to the Champions league next year, (unlikely I know.) He'd be nothing but a bit-part player for them if he stays but he could do a decent job for many teams at this level.

The only player I'd take from that list is Guthrie, and even he wouldn't improve us in the middle massively.

but on a free? now if we could just get Leon Crouch to subsidise his salary we'd be in a win-win situation.

Obviously with their French Armada in the middle o't park Newcastle don't need Guthrie.Pity we didn't go after the lad they signed to replace him,Amalfitano jr from Reims. They got him free and he's probably on about 5 bob a week as well.

Surprised by Guthrie! Would have thought he would have a part to play!

However, happy to be corrected the "experts" ... you know who you are, self-righteous pr*cks.

Not Good enough for Newcastle, not good enough for us. Why do we want their cast offs when we are both pushing for the champions league FFS?

You're kidding right? A very decent player and much better than Hammond and Chaplow. Provide some good competition for Cork and Schniderlin. Let them fight it out for the CM spots. Would be very good business to pick hI'm up for nowt.

A couple of yrs ago I won £400 on Newcastle to go down, Nxt Season I can see the same. The Season just gone was a poor one by Prem standards and was a pure fluke the Toon Army finished where they did.

You're talking complete and utter ********. Their midfield is packed full of talent, Coloccini is excellent, Krul and Santon good prospects (and reasonable at present!), with Ba somewhat mercurial and Cisse more predatory than Ched Evans - they're not going down.

totally agree.

however, with the Euro league or what ever it is...and raised expectations etc etc..there will do massively well to repeat last seasons feat

Was Guthrie the chubby one? We don't want any porkers.

As rightly corrected, that was Adam Hamill. He must have been on the George Burley fitness regime sponsored by Jameson's. Came in skinny & full of optimism, left fat & out of shape physically & mentally. Good old George!

Whoever thinks Guthrie adds nothing is clearly misguided. Much better that Hammond & an improvemt on Chaplow (who I like) & Leon Best did us a big favour bringing him in. Was sorry to see Guthrie go. Experience in PL, young & hungry for football AND free, seems to tick all our transfer policy boxes & ex Saints, something to prove. Sounds ideal. Love to see him link up with Morgan as someone astutely pointed out.

Yes please.

Eh? They've got an excellent spine to their squad, as good as any team in the Prem outside of Manchester. Krul, Coloccini, S. Taylor, Santon, Tiote, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Gutierrez, Ba and Cisse are anything but relegation fodder.

You cannot finish fifth in the Premier League by fluke.

Newcastle did want to keep him and offered him a new contract a few months back but he opted to see out his contract and go on a free to get first team football...

Definately worth trying to pick up as hes a free but wages maybe a stumbling block now.. depends how much he wants to play and whether a more established team like Stoke, Villa etc will offer more

If Guthrie had been that good he had played first team football with Toon and everybody would have been happy. I wish we could be a little more ambitious rather than to get all excited about players who have been there and not quite made it. Somewhere else I see that Jack Butland wouldn't join Saints but go to a "big" club like Everton or Aston Villa! There is really no need to have such an inferiority complex.

The ambitions of our chairman takes us to seek out young players with great potential for the long run to take us to much higher places in the PL than we so far have not even dreamt of. Lee Holmes in his farewell interview is talking about Champions League! Others who play or work for the club also talks about the surprising ambition which is pushing the club on.

If we do what we've always done we will struggle year after year with avoiding relegation. NC should be well known by now by all of us not to do what this club has always done. The plans are different because he is looking to achieve something different. That doesn't include spending obscene amounts of money on established superstars, but to spot the future superstars and develop them in a club which has got access to all technology and new thinking not to leave any stone unturned. We will occasionally get our superstars, also the odd turkey and a number of also-rans, but it is the only intelligent way to progress.

I kept on saying that the top 6 or 10 of L1 were no worse than most of the CC teams. We proved that. I now say that for an outstanding CC side they have nothing to fear from half of the teams in the PL. Norwich, Swansea, Villa, Everton, West Brom, Wigan, etc. Since they are the enemy I am starting to feel quite confident.

Guthrie is behind Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye at Newcastle. No disgrace at all. Guthrie is a great player, good engine, good passer, tough in the tackle, British and about the right age. I'd hope we'd be making an enquiry.

So you dont think Guthrie is better than Hammond and Chaplow?? You dont think he'd be good competition with Cork and Schiniderlin and you dont think he'd be a good signing on a free? Are you sure you know anything about football sunshine? If you think that you'd better get yourself on mumsnet.

If they're not good enough for Pards they're certainly not good enough for us. Why do people on here still thik we have to make do with somebody else's left overs. We want to be top six, right? So, let's find some top six players.

Indeed. I think we should sign that Oxlade Chamberlain chap. Or that Theo Walcott looks pretty good. Maybe that Welsh lad, Bale, at Tottenham. He'd be good for us. Those are the types of players we should be targetting.

I think Guthrie would be an improvement on some of our central midfielders but he wasn't the greatest when he was here last time. Worked hard, capable of injecting some pace, right sort of age, not sure about attitude if we wanted to rotate him out though.

We were pretty crappy around him when he was here before, but if Newcastle can find the relatively unhealed Tiote and Cabaye a year ago, I don't know why we couldn't do that too.
