Pilchards Posted 31 May, 2012 Share Posted 31 May, 2012 (edited) With Paul Lambert & Rogers leaving Norwich and Swansea this will surely help Saints this season, I'm pretty sure they won't attract a real quality manager that will help them survive this season. This leaves us to better Reading & West Ham to hold our own in the big league. IMHO Cortese will give Adkins till Xmas and we will need to be around 12th otherwise he will bring a proven Premiership manager as he has massive plans for this club. Pilchards Posted 31 May, 2012 Author Share Posted 31 May, 2012 Sorry I have just seen the other thread. Will change it to defensive concerns as IMHO we need Goalie, CB, RB & LB as they get skinned too easy. It takes time to gel a new back four so this could be the only worry I have this season, scoring goals will be fun!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 31 May, 2012 Share Posted 31 May, 2012 A proven premiership manager? Still think this way of thinking is hugely off the mark. Such managers has proven they won't stick in one place long term and be part of a plan like Corteses. There's only one way his plan will get close to working, and that's under a long-term manager who knows what they're trying to achieve and wants to stick with it. Just look at the demand for Martinez, Rodgers and Lambert. No reason Adkins can't eclipse them all. Who the hell would come in and guarantee success? Kenny Dalgleish?! He's won the premier league. Totally this.
Maggie May Posted 31 May, 2012 Share Posted 31 May, 2012 I'd be very impressed if Rangnick went to West Brom. They seem to be able to attract some good managers.

Saint J 77 Posted 31 May, 2012 Share Posted 31 May, 2012 Was reported to have handed in his notice at a stormy meeting this week. Ah ok thanks, I hadn't heard about that. Its a big loss for Norwich if its true.
Professor Posted 7 June, 2012 Share Posted 7 June, 2012 It was similar in the Championship last year, with some very key manager moves such as Sven, McClaren, Allardyce etc., showing the anxiety to get to The Prem. Its not surprising there is even more desparation to stay there as the financial rewards have widened to such a massive extent. Clubs are showing a willingness to spend a fortune to earn a fortune and its not just players who now have multi-million pound salaries when you hear that £3m pa isn't enough for Redknapp any more. Like it or not, staying in The Prem is all that matters for saints next year. To expect to challenge for the title is completely unrealistic against at least 6 or 7 squads that are stuffed with international level players and most of the other teams having more quality and experience than our squad brings with it. The team has shown over two seasons that it can compete but it has also lost games against teams a lot less capable than those we play next season. A little quality brought in, the winning habit, and if one or two of the young players prove their worth, and we may well hold amid table spot but to do better is most unlikely and to do worse would be very easy. There is nothing about any of this that isn't obvious to the club management so we anxiously wait to what steps they are taking to make sure the hard won Prem status is retained. As fans, the waiting is hard, and whatever the management do, fans will always want even more, but I do sincerely hope we don't wait as long as we did last year to bring in new blood. To hit the ground running you really need your new players to have been fully involved in pre-season. That still allows a few weeks, but is only weeks. At least for us, we don't have to see a new manager being bedded-in first.
david in sweden Posted 7 June, 2012 Share Posted 7 June, 2012 (edited) to say that bringing in a new manager is a sign for the team to fail is often true, but of course we can recall that both Pardew and Adkins did work a few miracles in their first seasons with SFC, as did Gordon Strachan. However, I do go along with that theory, and it takes a pretty strong personality to dictate to a team of seasoned professionals especially if the club happens to be Liverpool, or even Chelsea (as their recent managerial upheaval shows). It seems that players often pay more respect to a former player with a good reputation, than a great tactician before they get to fall in line. Perhaps our most successful manager, Lawrie McMenemy actually managed a relegation in his first season, whereas people like Chris Nicholl and Gordon Strachan (both players with impecable League and International backgrounds fared better) won players' respect- as did Glenn Hoddle in his brief stay. Back to next seasons Prem. There are a number of sides achieved what they have purely because of their managers, and not the strength of their squad. I think of Martinez at Wigan (who saved themselves at the death) and even Norwich with Paul Lambert. Swansea were promoted on the strength of their 6th place play-off win. and Brendan Rodgers. I don't expect them to show up much in the coming year. Mark Hughes' QPR were just plain lucky, but I won't harp on that as we survived the last day nightmares a few times ourselves in the late 1990's. I admire all the above-mentioned managers for what they achieved in their respective former clubs, but fear that they may all be in danger of a quick exit if things don't start well. Can ANYONE imagine seeing Liverpool... in the bottom half of the Prem. next seasosn ..who knows? Edited 7 June, 2012 by david in sweden
Professor Posted 7 June, 2012 Share Posted 7 June, 2012 Who on earth suggested challenging for the title? But there's a lot of room between top 7 and bottom 3. 17th is fine as a minimum, but it's suicide to aim for it. Maybe you've missed the whole point. That if you are playing in a league where challenging for the title is not a realistic option that leaves only some 12 or so clubs competing to stay out of the bottom 3. Very much an upside down competition where being 11th or 12th halfway through the season is no guarantee that you can't slip to 18th. The gap from 7th to 18th isn't as big as it might appear. Last season, at the halfway stage, Wolves who finished bottom were only 9 points behind the club that was in 8th place. That a promoted team can hope to make a challenge within a season or two comes from Newcastle who were only promoted in 2010, but have been near the top of the Prem most of the past season and finished 5th. But to do it, a club has to invest in quality players, or have the luck that players they bring in prove to be better than expected.
