Ajax at SMS

IIRC the previous Ajax friendly was in July 2009 - the first Saints game that Markus came to see at St. Mary's.

I've still got one of those 'Welcome Markus' t-shirts that the players wore when warming up and then threw into the crowd

Arsenal were the only confirmed team, Napoli was just a random forum rumour.

Could well be Ajax I guess, but we did play them a few years ago. I remember a certain Saurez scoring a hat-trick.

When were arsenal confirmed opponents then? I only read a story in the echo but no direct quotes from either club. I would be surprised if we played arsenal in pre-season.

It came from one of their club spokesman on twitter.

Unless I've missed something (please point out if I have) I don't know why we're playing Arsenal in pre-season. We're going to play them twice next season anyway, aren't we?

I know why Arse want to play us though - to wave dosh in front of more of our talent.

They will wipe the floor with us.

Not necessarily. That rather depends on whether they play their strongest team, or just use it as an exercise in blooding a few fringe players, or trying different formations. When we played the pre-season round robin tournament against Werder Bremen and Athletico Bilbao we beat the Germans and gave a good enough account of ourselves against the Spaniards as a 2nd division team. Anything can happen in these friendlies.

Whoosh! Vectis' joke went over your head, Wes! Ajax was or is still a floor cleaner! :) Hence "wipe the floor" with us. Nice one, Vectis.

I still don't get this 'why we playing another prem team mentality' often other prem teams play each other, last year for example Chelsea, Villa & Blackburn all played in the Asia cup. What's going to prepare us better for the prem playing the team that finished 3rd in the prem or playing Yeovil away??? Plus if Arsenal are playing it will be easier to attract a bigger European club like Ajax

It was late and I was tired. But I agree, they'll mop up / clean up / sparkle / come shining through / take us to the cleaners, etc ;)

Amsterdam is over-rated and expensive. Though I'd still go. Couldn't turn down watching Saints play such an iconic team away from home.

I remember going over to Rotterdam a few years back to watch us play Feyernord in a pre season friendly.

Haha, that's the spirit! Apparently their manager is a Vim Omo. :)

I think that initially they might dazzle us, but by the second half, our fitness levels and Lambert's ariel power might turn the tide and we can surf on the crest of a wave and win some more games on the bounce.

I hope it isn't Arsenal. I could see it being them if we didn't go up, but now we are going up, what's the point? we're playing them twice this year anyway. Would be obscene

Loads of Premiership clubs play each other these days in pre-season, though it's normally for commercial reasons abroad. Can't think of any playing each other on home soil in recent times.

why not though

better than playing birmingham or someone

prem teams do play each other in friendlies...regardless of what people think

It wouldn't really be obscene. Stop being so dramatic.

It's a pre-season game, who cares who it's against as long as we get a good run-out.

I think Arsenal are due in Nigeria at the same time, so we may be playing thier reserves.

And Arsenal Nigeria are due to be in Leeds, so there's a random Worldnet joke for you that about 5 people will get.

It's also in mid-July, so it's barely going to be a competitive match anyway with the season not starting for another month. Not to mention that the Liebherr Cup is a stupid 3-half format so it's barely legitimate anyway.

It always makes me laugh when I think back to when Brian Mooore etc used to commentate, it was Ajax with a hard J, it was like we're english and thats how its spelt, so thats how we'll say it.

The most interesting thing about that to me are the interviews with Dutchman Johnny Metgod when he was at Forest when he also used the hard J too. Turned out he was trying to fit in with the English way of doing things, which in turn led to more people calling them Ay-Jacks for a little while, "because that was obviously how the Dutch said it".

Still not as stupid as the temporary local pronunciations commentators adopt during major tournaments though :

For the duration of Euro 2004, Nuno Gomes was "Noo-noh Gohmz" rather than "Go-mezz" and all the players ending in "o" became "oo"s, eg "Deck-ooh" not "Deck-oh". There was even a "Cristiano Ronal-doo" for a little while. The latter is more accurate, but within 6 months of Greece winning the tournament, they were back to the old way of saying things, so why not just stick with the anglicised version ?

And then there's "Mick-aye-ell" Laudrup at World Cup 1986. What was Tony Gubba thinking ?
