Nicolas Lodeiro

The guy who posted this thinks it will just be a short loan for the player to prove his fitness and our chances of making it permanent if he does well are pretty low. Makes it seem a strange move if true surely even fitness aside, the time it would take to adjust to a different style of play and better opposition makes a short loan with no chance of making it permanent a waste of time.

I would be astonished if he came here. His progress at Ajax has been hampered by the emergence of Cristian Eriksson, but a few years ago he was rated as arguably Uruguay's best young player. Would be delighted with this, though I imagine it would take him to adapt to the premier league (it feels good to be able to say that and not just 'the English game'!)

Only a couple of short years before he went to Pompey, Andres D'Alessandro was being touted as 'the next Maradona'... it would be quite a coup to get Lodeiro, but stranger things have happened. These South American wunderkinds are often built up to be potential world beaters from the age of 16, move to Europe very young, and often it doesn't quite work out for them. A change of scenery could be what he needs, and if he does well for us it wouldn't be totally out of the question to sign him permanently. Don't see how we can lose out with this one, really.

Longer vid, go to 3:05 to skip past all the pictures of him.

Seems very talented, likes to run at the defence then pick out a ball for a striker rather than shooting, which is what we do at home most of the time.

He would be a great signing, he's technically superb. However, the key word I feel is "enquired" not "are going to sign". He's out of contract as well, so perhaps we could sign him?

As the poster on twitter said, it may only be short-term as he's had a really bad year with injuries this season

Would be a fantastic signing, still very highly thought of in Uruguay, though he seems not to have fulfilled his early promise at Ajax for whatever reason.

He played a part for Uruguay in half of their Copa America games last year, winning the tournament. Don't know about his injuries, but if Nigel thinks he could get him fit then I doubt there are many better left footed midfielders we could realistically go for.

Would be a top signing - it ain't gonna happen though I don't think. Plus I'm not sure we should be thinking about loan players - they don't work out so well when we're trying to retain a squad spirit that's as close as the one we've enjoyed for the last 2-3 years.

Isn't he out of contract at the end of June? It would be a straightforward Bosman and not a loan really.

so... are we saying he'll be the new midfield " hard man " everyone wants?

...only hope he doesn't have a bad disciplinary record.

doubt it, he's an offensive midfielder anyway. Midfield "hardmen" no longer exist, the rules of the game have made them obsolete.

He's not a hard man at all... he's small, quick feet, good technique. A while back he was being touted as the "Uruguayan Messi" (before injuries and lack of chances at Ajax), so if anything, he's a new Lallana type player ;-) But left footed! We could have them as "inverse" wingers on each flank.

Agreed, the Hard men of football only play half a season these days with suspensions.

This Guy certainly has pedigree, and if we are interested, it says a lot about our Premier league approach.. lets score more than the opposition.

I'd actually be far more excited about Lodeiro than Jay Rod, but it seems from Twitter that there are also several Italian clubs after him, including Cagliari, Udinese, Chevo Verona, and Parma. I think a young Uruguayan would feel much more at home in Italy than England due to the cultural similarities, but hope he comes to Saints all the same!

This is true. Loaning in Chaplow, Guly and Hooiveld was particularly disruptive.

ITK agent is a fake. This was confirmed by an actual agent.

Perhaps the actual agent was a fake? Anyway he cant be a fake because that would mean that twitter and cyberspace was infested by underachievers trolling and lying to each other about what they know and who they met.

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Monti says that because of latest bribery scandals ...Italian clubs should be banned from playing for 3 years.

(sounds like a real vote-winner - that one), but if Lodeiro moves to Italy he might find himself signing for a club about to be banned..or bankrupt.

Jos, Guly and Chaplow on loan were all loans. Adkins doesn't seem to be interested in loans that we would have no subsequent ability to buy if they work out, if this went through you can be certain there will be an option to buy.

Calciopoli II is looking, by all accounts, to be absolutely massive, bigger than the first time round, and with the political and economic situation in Italy being so different now, I think Monti would actually get support for a hard line stance on football in general. I think you will see a lot of players avoiding or looking to leave Italy over the next 12 months.

So he's a good Lee Holmes.

If you believe all you read on the internet Liverpool were after him as well.Big mate of Suarez apparently.

If it wasn't for his recent injury record, Liverpool is definitely the kind of place I would expect Lodeiro to go. He is easily top 6 in the Prem class (although whether Liverpool are anymore is up for debate!). If he is over his injury problems, then us getting him would be a major coup.
