So I hear. Will we wish him well or not? Would probably be ideal for both parties.

Good God I hope not!! He would be a great signing for them. I hope a proper football club come in for him before that deal goes through.

Would be good for him, a level where he'll perform well, doesn't have to relocate...and probably a pay rise to boot.

That's a good point, other clubs who play by the rules will not be able to compete with the wages pompey are offering. Perhaps he is going there to finish them off for us! He can collect big wages while hopefully being injured all the time :)

If by great you mean 'score 5 goals and spend most of the time in the treatment room' then yes, he will be. Their squad is going to look pretty thin next season, what could be funnier than them spunking money on a player who wont be available most of the time.

A injury free DC would be great for them but as you have said its unlikely he will be out the treatment room. Plus do they even have a treatment room now? Wasn't one of their players last season unable to get a scan due to lack of funds?

Is there a treatment room at Portsmouth?

Good luck to DC going there, in fact maybe the way to end the animosity would be if they signed a full team of ex-Saints so Pompy could become the Southampton pension scheme.

In their (up sh1te creek) situation I'd be surprised if Pompey were not looking to sign younger players, will correspondingly more modest pay demands, than David Connolly. Mind you, never say never because things happen in this game that constantly surprise me.

As for how we should feel about it, the truth is we decided to release this player, so as far as I'm concerned he is perfectly entitled to seek new employment wherever he so chooses.

Their manager recently did an interview where he said the average age of the squad will be around 23/24.

They also have the colossal issue of getting their wage bill down to 65% of turnover otherwise they'll be hit with more sanctions.

Getting rid of Kanu will go a long way towards achieving the first part of that. ;)

I'd be surprised if they offered him anything other than a 'pay as you play' type contract ?

Mind you, with the Skates anything is possible !

That is a huge ask with Ben Haim still around. Our turnover was around £10m in league on I believe, they will get smaller crowds so will undoubtedly be lower. As he's rumoured to be on anything between £35-£50k if they can't get shot of him his wages are 20% or turnover alone.

Ben Haim's wage packet always makes me smile. Thank you for brightening up my day Turkish :)

Birch, their administrator is desperately trying to get them all off the payroll but with HMRC losing the FCR case Ben Haim and others are in no rush.

Ben Haim has another year left of his contract, that's £2m and their wage budget, in total, for next season has been set at £5m.

Tripe. The OP is notorious at starting dud speculation threads

Ummm...Like what? I started one in January about some Arsenal defender that was meant to be coming on loan which didn't happen but I saw it on a Newspaper link so thought I'd post it. Other than that, it's been virtually years since I've started a tread on any transfer speculation. So I don't think "notorious" would be the word...

Pompey thinking short term again

He'll be 35 come the start of the season and with his injury problems can only see him doing a bit of a job for them for 1 season max. His wages would be up there with others in L1 so could cost them. They should be going back to basics and going with cheap youth in the hope a few come though and give them a charge into the championship. Let's hope they carry on looking at higher wage 35 year olds.

Spoke to the guy again today (who for some reason thinks that signing Connolly would be 'getting one over on us') and he says he has a contact who's been very reliable in the past. I then went on to speak to another Saints fan at work and apparently he guaranteed Surman and Lallana would be signing for them in the year we went into League One....It's B.S I think. Sorry everyone, you can probably go ahead and lock this now, mods.

I expect he wants to play on for at least a couple more seasons. If he was retiring we could keep him on as a striking coach. His experience and footballing brain would be brilliant for our youth players. Even some of our first team players could learn a thing or two from him I reckon.

I could imagine him signing for Bournemouth actually. Since they've got that wealthy Russian guy in alongside Mitchell, they've started to splash the cash. He'd probably get better wages at Bournemouth than if he signed for Cheats.

He can do one if he goes there

Do you feel the same about Mick Channon?

no.

Channon was with Saints for years, even returned here, before going to the sk8s. So he will have been well versed in all the rivalry.

Connolly has been here a few seasons, played at lot of other clubs and owes no particular allegiance to Saints.

Why should Conolly 'do one' in comparison with Channon doing exactly the same thing?

Why does Channon escape your acid castigation?

This doesn't seem logical at all.

But then maybe you're just trolling and I bit?

He needs a paycheck like the rest of us so If he goes to the blue few then congrats to him for getting a last contract before hanging up his boots.

Nicely put Patrik. I'm afraid the "hate Pompey brigade" curse anyone who even gets near Fratton Park - except on a match day.

For decades past, Pompey has been the end of the line for quite a few former Saints players before they retire. Good luck to DC if true.

The movement in the other direction (to Saints) has been far fewer.
