S**** Blatter "tragedy"..

Sepp Blatter has really f***ed the game of football in Europe. NOW (surprise, surprise) he says penalty-shootouts ate a "tragedy" - so is war.

Whilst we've sat watching games on TV and saw goals and offsides that weren't, goals that went in and weren't given whilst he insisted on the

respect being shown to referees whilst ignoring technology that is used in mnay other international sports ..now he says "it's a tragedy " to settle a game by a penalty shoot-out. How many years have we been living with this?..and didn't we all weep when we lost our shoot-out v. Derby some years ago...but they seemed to approve when they though up the idea..until last week.

Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that a GERMAN side lost - would it ?..or that Beckenbauer is a high flier in UEFA?

Yes Bayern were certainly the better attacking side on the night (v.Chelsea) but surely Chelseas should get some credit for their defensive skills?

Watching that game - with millions of others- it looked to us - like they wouldn't score had they played into Sunday night.

Sour grapes Blatter, and Teutonic favouratism into the bargain. The sooner you go the better, and take Platini with you !

I've seen my side lose on penalties and win on penalities. It was brilliant when we won and heartbreaking when we lost.

But I'll tell you one thing, it was FAIR.

Blatter is an idiot - and bent too.

I'm with Blatter on this one. Detest penalties. If a replay is not possible, need to get a result within 120 minutes. Corners won, free kicks conceded, percentage of possession, anything but penalties.

Spot on! Brilliant defending is not some kind of scourge on football, it's half the bl00dy game!

We English have been on the receiving end of many penalty shootout humiliations... we don't complain about it because we know our teams weren't good enough to win in normal time. It's a fair way of deciding who was the better team on the night. If a team has a problem with that, they should go all out to win a game before it has to be settled that way.

I quite like the actual penalties but what i dont like is sometimes how the extra times can be borings cos they are settling for penalties and scared to take risks!

Here is my suggestions for making extra times more attackings!

  • Bigger goals! They can replace the goals with bigger ones for extra times!
  • No offsides! You can't be off sides in extra times! you can goal hangs as much as you like!
  • Less defenders! You is only allowed 6 players in your half at any one time! The rest must be forwards! If you have 7 players in your own half the other team gets a penalty!

Yeah, a much better way of playing it out. You do realise you'd end up with teams playing even more negative football trying to keep the ball if it was decided on possession?

Why? What's wrong with them??

People say it comes down to an inividual. So what? a team is made of individuals. Penalties are a TECHNICAL skill in football. It's like a bowl-out in cricket.

If you are shyte at penalties, try to win the game.... ;)

I genuinely enjoy the MLS (not sure if they still do it, but certainly used to) way of deciding a game...10 second, 1 on 1 from the half way line, dribble it in and finish...5 takers each team....still a sudden death penalty drama type situation...but a player's nerve, skills and finishing come more into play than just walloping it at the goalie from 12 yards.

I completely agree. Just better all round.

Certainly worth another try.

Simple answer is play 15 mins of 10 on 10, 15 mins of 9 on 9 etc and just carry on playing until someone scores the golden goal. Theres no point in being defensive as the only option is to score to win. Id bet that 90% of games would be decided before 2 periods of ET.

Blatter is a bell end though.

I was hoping the OP was going to reveal Bladder had perished in a terrible accident.

Maybe next time.

That was my reaction as well tbh.

As for the deciding factor, penalties are alright I suppose, but what about a proper fistfight to decide it? Both sides pick 5 men from their team, (subs and manager would be available,) first side with every man on the deck loses. I reckon we'd be ok there as long as we hang on to Barney.

didn't we have the golden goal.

no harm in that...

Yeah, they got rid of that one because it was (apparently) causing teams to be more defensive. There's always the other FIFA standby, which is that "some countries don't understand it"... that one did for advancing free-kicks 10 yards (remember that ?).

They haven't done it for at least 10 years.

Just checked, they got rid of the post-match shootout to resolve drawn games in 1999.

Wonder if he would of said the samething if ze Germans had won?

It's funny because didn't he say they were fair and good a few years back?

Being in the states a lot I have to agree with the above that there are some better ways to settle games. I think he was describing Ice Hockey style penalties though.

A way to do it would be to just have an 'over-time' period. So say you get 20 mins playing one way and if nobody has scored then 20mins the other way. If after that nobody has scored then go to penalties with the kicker starting with the ball in the semi circle and has 15 seconds with the ball. If he shoots and the keeper saves it then he can shoot again if the ball rebounds to him. If the keeper saves it and keeps the ball or knocks it out of play its over. All that matters is the time. This would then make the keeper and penalty taker have to show a bit of skill and would make it more "fair".

On the subject generally, Blatter comes out with at least one ridiculous proclamation a year just to remind people he exists.

So far I can recall...

"Bigger goals" and "four quarters" prior to 1994 World Cup

"Tucking in shirts" prior to 1998 World Cup

That thing about women wearing shorter shorts, 2004

Saying they'd never look at goal-line technology in 2010 prior to the the World Cup

Saying they'd DEFINITELY look at goal-line technology during the 2010 World Cup

Dumping Golden goal in 2006

Solving racism with a handshake in 2011

C Ronaldo was like a slave, 2008...

Additional officials all over the place, 2007

He actually supported drawn group matches going to extra time and penalties for the 2010 World Cup, so he was fine with them then. And proposing that extra time was removed and matches could go straight to pens, around the time he was dumping Golden Goal.

Even me, being German, detest penalties.

I'm with that old git here as well.

Penalties are just a 50-50 lottery and that should not decide a football match or even a final...

If I were German I would love penalties. Especially since they have been so "lucky" with them over the last 30 years. :)

It wasn't from the halfway line it was from a line marked at each end about 35 yards out from each goal-line and I think the player had 23 seconds or something from the blow of the whistle.

Either way it involved some degree of skill and ball control and some degree of goalkeeping skill, other than guessing the right way to dive, but I believe it was FIFA that stopped it in the NASL because they were the only league doing it and it wasn't approved and they needed to come in line with rest of FIFA leagues - or something like that. I might have made that up though.

It seems to be the best way as far as I can see - along with silver and golden goals - but that would be too easy. It's not as if teams play defensively as it is but one **** up in extra time and you are out.....

Hats off to Chelsea, I was happy when they won but I ****ing love it now. Sepp Blatter and that nazi c*nt Beckenbauer must have hated it when the English side took the trophy home.

Blatter has such an anti English agenda, a German team loses on penalties and it's a tragedy, yet he didn't say a thing about goal=line technology when we scored that goal against the kraut c*nts.

If you can't win a game in over 2 hours of football, you don't really deserve to. The lottery of a shootout may not be entirely fair, but it's as close as you will get. Taking penalties is a legitimate skill, it's not like you're flipping a coin to decide the winner. The other suggestions are all a bit Micky Mouse and would be a lot worse than pens.

Possession - Extra time would be the most defensive game of anti-football ever. Just passing around the back 4 trying to keep the ball.

Corners - Why should you deserve to win just because you've wasted more corners than the other team?

Shots on target - Again extra time would be stupid, players just taking hopeless shots from the halfway line, just to tally up another effort on target.

I'm more inclined towards getting rid of extra time personally. In any game but the final, it's not really fair on the away team.

Bigger balls that bounce more. Maybe filled with helium. Or put the physio in goal for extra time.

Blatter is an idiot. World cup to Qatar FFS what was he thinking. Now the Germans lose on penalties and there he goes again. The sooner he falls under a tank the better. Btw Chelsea played for pens from the first minute - as well as a great defensive performance, they also put a stain on the game with their refusal to attack. to me to you to me to you to Cech to me to you is no way to play football. If everyone did that no-one would watch it.

World Cup: First knock out round, keep it as usual 1st vs 2nd match ups from the groups. New rule: 1st place team advances if it is a draw after extra time.

Pros: Makes group matches more exciting with the extra incentive to finish first. Second seed has to go for the win in the knockout match, and the first seed will probably too (see below).

Next round, teams are seeded according to how many "points" they have. 8th seed vs. 1st, 7th vs. 2nd, etc. Points are those accrued from the group stage, plus an extra 3 points if the team won the first knock out round in 90 minutes, or an extra 2 points if won in extra time, and no extra points if only advanced by being the higher seed after failing to win in 120 minutes. In the event of equal points, goal difference followed by goals scored (from all previous matches) is the next tie breaker to determine seeding. Again the highest seed advances if it is a draw after extra time.

Each subsequent round is done the same way (points, goals for and against are accrued from previous rounds in the same manner).

Pros:

No penalty kicks required.

Eliminates boring games where both teams play for extra time and penalties: one team at least will always go for the win, probably both as the higher seeded team has an incentive to win in 90 minutes or extra time to get points for the next round.

Simples.

Thinking penalties are a lottery is so typically fecking British...

When golf goes to a play off is that a lottery too? Well either golfer could hit a poor shot, the ball could spin on the lip of the cup...

Penalties are a SKILL.

A football skill. They take mental strength (check) and technique (check).

If Blatter wants to address the real tragedies in football (what a ridiculous word to choose), he could look at introducing technology to prevent games being decided on the ability or not of an official to make a judgement about an event that may or may not have hapepned fifty feet from where he is stood...

The problem with anything that has no fixed timing is that is has no fixed timing!

Golden goal is a disaster for television coverage and transportation, and when tried has resulted in teams trying not to concede ahead of trying to score...

Play on forever and take off one player every 15 mins, then the only way of winning is to score.

I've seen many games where the result was decided by a penalty...and the score was 1-0....(and often a dubious penalty too).

If one team has 20+ shots and still can't score ...why should you feel sorry for them in a penalty situation?

Bayern had enough goal chances to win 3 games! They only have themselves to blame, and Blatter standing up for them is even worse.

Considering Chelsea were without FOUR of their regular players, I think they did well to hold 0-0 as long as they did.

I think any side - even with a full squad to choose from would have played a bit defensively against Bayern Munich on their own turf - don't you!

In fairness it could work. A boxing style points scoring system based on shots on/off target and possesion. Points deducted for fouls, bookings and sendings off would encourage teams to attack. Would be just as nerve-racking as a pen shoot out watching the results flash up on the big screen.

Mmm..tell Rickie Lambert that - will you, and while you're at it, Matt Le Tissier, too.

You've got a point there.

But my opinion does NOT have anything to do with the CL final.

I can't stand Bayern, so I don't care.
